I'm really annoyed that I could not find my way into audiobooks yet. I have an iPod and so much time where I can't read, but could listen instead. Doing chores, going grocery shopping, marching from my office to the train station etc.How did you guys start your first audiobooks? Did you find it easy, or did you have to learn to concentrate on the story because your mind wandered (like mine does)?
I originally only did audio books for long car rides where I was driving by myself for 6+ hours.
Then later I started doing rereads of books where it was easier to get distracted and not get lost in the plot.
Eventually I just got used to doing audio books and now I do more in audio than I don't.

I started with rereads of Terry Pratchett books. That being said, I'm an avid podcast listener and before that I listened to a lot of programmed radio.Podcasts are particularly good training for audiobooks as they are usually 30-90 minutes long. If you can listen for that long you can do a chapter of an audiobook.
My first audiobook was The Name of the Wind which I had previously read and it took me two years to finish. Think it helps to start with something you have read before and know you will enjoy. I found that listening at a slightly increased speed helps keep my attention better. For some reason 1x automatically makes me tune out. I really got into audiobooks starting last year and so far this year I have done 38/80 of my books in audio.
I'll try to join you next week, but I might just comment later. As for the audiobooks, I started the same way as Rob, and still like them most when I'm driving or cooking. I only listen to them about 25 hours a month, though, and prefer 'normal' reading. Listening to audio is just a way to add that extra book or two per month :). And yes, I had to learn to concentrate, but it improves with practice, I should say.
So there are two dire situations going on:1. I'm completely up to date with my podcast listening.
And
2. The Lankies have invaded the solar system and landed on Mars!
These two situations seem inter-related somehow ... ;)
Can anyone squeeze in Angles of Attack anywhere?
Best proposal for a group read ever! I'd be up for hearing what happens on Mars. We're all gonna die!
I was about to start a 30+ hour WoT book, but it looks like angles is only 10. I could probably do it if I start it next.
Anyone interested to read with me any of the following Fantasy books? I promise I will not give up, and read until the end!! :) Would love to :)..The First Law Trilogy, starting with #1 The Blade Itself
The Riyria Chronicles, starting with #1 Theft of Swords
Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, starting with #1 The Emperor's Blades
Raven's Shadow, starting with #1 Blood Song
Red Rising Trilogy, starting with #1 Red Rising
The Malazan Book of the Fallen, starting with #1 Gardens of the Moon
A Song of Ice and Fire, starting with #1 A Game of Thrones
Liveship Trilogy, starting with #1 Ship of Magic
We've actually done most of those books already, and there are discussion threads for them. Feel free to post your thoughts there.
I could do Ship of Magic in December. If that time frame works for you we can add on to existing threads.
I did Theft of Swords already, but I want to do the rest of Riyria at some point. I wouldn't mind re-reading Theft of Swords, because I didn't write a review last time and it's been too long to remember all the details.I don't want to do Song of Ice and Fire, because I doubt it will ever get finished. I didn't quite catch the Malazan bug after the first book, so not keen on those either.
So. How 'bout them lankies?
I don't think they're going to just kick themselves out of the solar system ...
Do you think we could fit in Chains of Command this month? Just in time for Fields of Fire to come out in February?

I really want to, but I'm not sure when I'll have time just yet. Expanse is Tuesday. I was going to try Ninefox Gambit in audio too since I'm waaay behind on my text still. Maybe after. Or maybe I'll just skip Ninefox for now.
Tentatively I'd say I could do it closer to Christmas. I'll have two 7 hour drivers around then

Well, how about scheduling it from the week of the 19th through until the first week of January? That would make it roughly the same distance from when we did book 3 as book 4 would be from when book 5 comes out.

That works for me too. I'm trying to finish Faithful Place before Babylon's Ashes - and as soon as I finish both of those I can do Chains.
Wow and I looked, we kind of stalled out in June after going through the first 6 at a pretty good clip..
I can either do mid/late January or mid/late February. I'm not sure who else will be joining in..
I'm not making an official proposal but I may make a few threads in the Brandon Sanderson folder to discuss Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection. Its probably up next for me. It'd be nice to have a place to comment on the various stories, especially Edgedancer.

I own that. I'm not sure how many of the stories I'll be reading. Or when for that matter. I'm sure I've read some before. I'll definitely be interested in discussing Edgedancer though.

Rob wrote: "So when would work for you? I know you need to catch up first.."I'm starting DoK at 7 am tomorrow morning on my commute. I should be done with it fairly soon. Can do it straight afterwards, so mid/late January should be plenty of time.

OK. Let's see if anyone else weighs in.

I am in for Kloos and the Saxon stories. I don't want to read the Sanderson. I'm still kind of angry about Calamity and am needing time to get over it....a year later. :) .
See, I take my anger over Calamity/Reckoners out on his non-Cosmere works. I'm done buying/reading those. However since this collection is Cosmere stuff, I picked it up.
I'm going to go ahead and set Saxon for January 17th (although I may start a bit early depending on how my reading goes this month)

Don't take it out on his Rithmatist book though. I loved that book! I don't know why he chose to write more Reckoners books instead of continuing with the Rithmatist books. It's like those two series were written by two different authors.
I did read Rithmatist before Calamity - and I liked it! You are right - that would have been a better world to continue. And yeah - I think I will just focus on Cosmere works. Really I wouldn't have been so mad about Calamity except I spent $13 on it lol and way too much time washing those puns out of my brain. I still think about the sun/moon rising like a manatee..... gag.
Rithmatist was alright. I liked it better than Reckoners, but probably won't be picking up the second one if/when he releases it.
But anyways..we should get some other reads on the calendar for February and maybe March.
Any other releases people are looking forward to early next year? Or maybe a stand alone (if they even exist anymore). I'm a bit hard pressed to start yet another series when I have so many others in progress currently.
Maybe I should move ahead the list we had going at the end of the month, and see if anything there sparks some new interest..

Checking through some of the to-be-released books I must read right away:City of Miracles April
Assassin's Fate May
I don't see anything on the next shadow campaigns book
I'm going to read Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi soon
And hmm....those are my big series anymore.
I'm trying to knock off some books from the Fantasy Masterworks collection. Most are standalone. Going to start with Lud-in-the-Mist if anyone is interested. Here is the full list: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanta...
My tentative list of new releases for 2017 are:
Fields of Fire
City of Miracles
Assassin's Fate
Age of Swords
The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter
Persepolis Rising
Shadow Campaigns 5
The Stone Sky
Oathbringer
The Thorn of Emberlain
Peace Talks
But I'm not sure if all of those will come out for sure this year or what (if any) of them have firm dates beyond the two Suzanne listed.

I might interested in Lud be depending on timing. I'm not sure how many from that list I'll be interested in though. Maybe the Gene Wolfe books.
