Jaime | 97 comments Ah okay. I have never done that before, but I am sure I can figure it out :)

With a book that short, probably only need 1-2 threads. I usually do roughly one for every 100 pages, but you can do it however you prefer.

message 1153: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 97 comments Okay I got the threads up for The Last Days of New Paris set up, so we are ready for the group read. =)

Cool. Thanks Jamie. See, being a discussion leader here is easy!

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
So I posted this in the other thread, but I'll double post it here just in case, any else interested in/planning to read The Rise of Io in October?

message 1156: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 97 comments Now because there was some talk about suggesting things outside of fantasy, I'm just going to list some things sitting on my shelves.

All the Light We Cannot See Historical Fiction
You Thriller (part of series but I believe can be read as a stand alone)
The Man from Primrose Lane Thriller
Broken Monsters Thriller
Girl at War Historical Fiction
The Shining Thriller
Child of God Fiction
Slaughterhouse-Five Classic
Station Eleven Fiction/Dystopian
Fingersmith Historical fiction

A couple of SFF (stand alone books) for those interested in reading SFF, but not starting another series.
The Bone Clocks
The Goblin Emperor
The Graveyard Book

That seems like enough for now.

message 1157: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 97 comments Rob wrote: "Cool. Thanks Jamie. See, being a discussion leader here is easy!"

It sure is.
=)

message 1158: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I've done a few of those already and would be willing to discuss them, but probably not reread them.

The Shining
Station Eleven
The Goblin Emperor

I think I own Slaughterhouse-Five and would be interested in reading that at some point.

I'll have to look at the others later. None are familiar to me.

I want to read this because I loved Red Rising but don't think I can wait a year with his cliffhangers. Might wait for the series to be finished like I did for Red Rising.

I would be interested in The Bone Clocks, The Goblin Emperor and The Graveyard Book. Need to check into the others.

I think you're confusing The Rise of Io with Iron Gold?

message 1161: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments Yep. Well then i'm in.

message 1162: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
So I have interest in the following, though I'm not sure when I'd be able to fit anything in just yet:

All the Light We Cannot See
The Graveyard Book (although this is fantasy)

I'm also possibly interested in:

The Man from Primrose Lane
Fingersmith
The Bone Clocks

Though not as much as the first two.

message 1163: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 97 comments Yeah I can understand having trouble fitting in another group read. I would need it to be after Golden Compass I think. I figured This would give us a chance to see if there is interest and plan a little ahead, so those who need time to get the book or plan ahead can.

Also I threw in a couple of fantasy stand alones (ie The Graveyard Book) because I figured It might make it easier for people to join in discussions with a stand alone. Not much of a commitment.

message 1164: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I'm very much like planning ahead!

I used to have my top 10 on my TBR list as kind of a rough plan of my next 10 reads, with flexibility to move stuff around or add new books, but lately it's been a lot more seat of the pants on filling in gaps between my various group reads.

message 1165: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments I Recently picked up these 3 if anyone else is interested in reading them. They all have free kindle versions. They are all standalone and the first two are pretty short.

The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare
A Voyage to Arcturus
Orlando Furioso

message 1166: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Hmm. Maybe on the The Man Who Was Thursday. It's pretty short at least.

message 1167: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 629 comments Nice list Jaime. I'm interested in All the Light, You, Child of God and Fingersmith. I would also up for The Man Who Was Thursday.

message 1169: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is excellent and the sequel is due out very soon.

I'm going to attempt to consolidate the lists down a bit based on interest so far. It seems like there are a few possibilities. I'll update the list as we go and try to narrow it down to add a few more reads for September/October, then late September revisit it (and any new suggestions) to add some stuff for November/December.

Personally I have time to read maybe 1 of these in mid/late September and another mid/late October (not counting Rise of Io which I'll be reading regardless).

Any other interest in some of these listed (or others previously suggested?) what time frame/which books would work best for people the next 2 months or so?

I'm a maybe on several of these.

I think my top interest is in:

The Rise of Io
All the Light We Cannot See
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
The Last Kind Words

message 1173: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Also, I'm happy to schedule a bunch over the next few months if there is interest, but I'll only participate in a 1 or 2 each month myself.

So talk up your favorites and lets get some stuff scheduled.

message 1174: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments I've wanted to read To Kill a Mockingbird for a long time, because everyone I know read it in school and I never did. I think Ctgt was also interested in that.

message 1175: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments I am interested in Rise of Io and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Might jump into Boneclocks (pre-ordered, owned, owned)

message 1176: by Bill (last edited Aug 23, 2016 07:17AM) (new)

Bill | 1596 comments There are two books releasing in October that we started the series. Are we doing them?

The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu - October 4th
The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks - October 25th

message 1177: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Wall of Storms is already on the shelf I believe (I'm not in on that, but there was interest in it a few months back).

I'd be up for Blood Mirror, but that probably means I can't/won't have time for another from the above list in October as a result. It's hard to say, because that will probably be an audio book and I may have time to read one of those others in text.

Jaime | 97 comments I am interested in Speaks the Nightbird and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

I would have been totally in for Blood Mirror, but after I found out that it wasn't the last book I have put off reading that series until I know when the last book will be out. So I would need to read books two and three before the release date which is possible (I already own the books), but I don't really think it will happen. So many books!

Anyone have thoughts/up for adding something in mid/late September from the list?

Whenever you're ready Kat. I've read it before but I recently picked up the audio version with Sissy Spacek as the narrator so I'm itchin' to give that a try.

Kat | 1178 comments Ctgt wrote: "Whenever you're ready Kat."

I can do it now, actually. Current other reads aren't running away, and I have Mockingbird burning a hole in my Kindle.

Also, I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and will hopefully get a sick note for a few days and will be forced to spend a lot of time on my reading sofa with both my feet up and bandaged.

LOADS OF LUXURIOUS READING TIME !!!!!

message 1188: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 629 comments Okay. Won't be able to setup the threads until I get home tonight.

message 1189: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments What great lists - I missed this thread going - I am still not used to the new goodreads format. Using the * for have read, would discuss.

Reads I'd love to join (using the most recent consolidated list
Terms of Enlistment (*)
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
The Graveyard Book (*)
The Goblin Emperor (*)
All the Light we Cannot See (*)
A Man Called Ove (*) was a surprising feel-good favorite for me
To Kill a Mockingbird (*)

I will definitely read The Blood Mirror and The Rise of Io too.

I'm planning on reading in September (if anyone wants to join me)
The Sudden Appearance of Hope
Hollow World
Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy

message 1190: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Looks like the top candidates for a mid/late September read are:

1) The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Ctgt, Rob, Sky2, Jamie, Suzanne
2) The Bone Clocks - Jaime, Bill, Rob (maybe), Sky2 (maybe)
3) All the Light We Cannot See - Jaime, Rob, Ctgt, Suzanne*
4) The Goblin Emperor - Jaime, Bill, Rob*, Dara*
5) Speaks the Nightbird - Ctgt, Rob, Jaime

Seems like Long Way is the clear favorite, which is Sci-Fi and more in our wheelhouse while some of the others would be breaking new ground a bit.

Also, so far it's most of the usual suspects (minus Scott who I haven't seen post for a week or two) chiming in on the reads, but maybe if we pick something interesting enough some of the other members will be excited to join in!

Thoughts?

message 1191: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments Looks like a good list! Hopefully other members will chime in too - it'll help when the books are on the group's header/official list - sometimes that is the first time I see upcoming books.

message 1192: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments One thought: The sequel to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is out on October 20th. Maybe schedule it as well? It's called A Closed and Common Orbit.

That would make September an ideal time for a reread so put me down as well, please. For both if you schedule the second.

message 1193: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
That's a good idea Lindsay. Except Amazon lists 10/18 for the Kindle and 3/17 for the paperback.

OK, so let's say:

September 20th: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
October 18th: A Closed and Common Orbit

That would work for me. How about everyone else?

message 1194: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1582 comments That sounds good to me!

I'm assuming I'll enjoy the first enough to want to read the second. Hoping so anyway!

message 1195: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Right. Same with me. I'll trust in Lindsay!

message 1196: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments It's an excellent book. Slow and gentle with really likable characters that you get to know through a series of episodic events. It's like a whole series of a good SF TV show in a single book.

Sky | 1291 comments Sweet! I am definitely in for small angry planet.

I am going back to work again after labor day (I havent been in the office since March!) so that'll add a few hours of audio for the commute and what I can sneak in and read at my desk :D My participation/reading rate should definitely increase.

message 1199: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I'll just warn that the audio only came out last month. If you like it and want to read book 2, it'll have to be in kindle or you'll have to wait.

message 1200: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 97 comments I am in for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. I will have to wait on the sequel because I like to read physical books. I have a difficult time getting lost in the story if I read it as an ebook because eye and concentration issues when reading on a screen.

Also not sure if any of you heard of Ninefox Gambit, but it caught my eye and I picked it up.

Oh and I think I will join in on the discussion for To Kill A Mockingbird too. I just read it back in June and enjoyed it.
