I definitely want to read it but I'm not sure when I'll have the time. Really wanting to finish Malazan by the end of the year
Pretty much the same as Scott. I have it on my shelf but it has a post-it that says, "Not until Malazan is finished!"
We can put it off, I don't mind -- I had another group reading it next month, which is why I'd originally suggested it -- but honestly I'm fine with holding onto it until some point next year.
I have a harder time fitting in older books as I'm always reading new releases these days it seems.
Anyone else planning on reading Empire Ascendant by Kameron Hurley? I know people were kind of indifferent about book 1 when we read it. I just picked it up and would like to read it in a group if possible.
The Widow's House is scheduled for next friday (11/13). Are people still planning to participate? Is someone willing to be the discussion leader? I think Lindsey did it for book 3.
If not should I push it off for a bit? If so, until when?
(I'll be on the road for the next 7ish hours) I can take care of it later tonight.

I'm still planning on reading it then, but happy to reschedule if people need to. I'm also happy to create the threads again.
I think book 3 was Bill, Suzanne, Teanka and myself reading it, with Rob joining in for commentary. I'll check to see if Teanka is still going to read it with us.Bill, are you likely to catch up with book 3 this week to join in? Should we hold off a little for you?
I should be able to get it finished by the time you all start book 4. Don't hold off for me I will jump in to the discussion even if I am a bit late.
Bill that happens with me too - it seems like all of my library holds are either holding or arriving together.
That always seems to be the case. In this case my library purchased 9 books I recommended at the same time.I also have bought a bunch of books that were kindle daily deals.

I am, but this time I'm going to listen to it and in my case, that means that it will take longer to finish. Anyway, I have it planned for this month.
So I have been buying a bunch of books lately and wanted to see if anyone was interested in reading any of them sometime next year. The Lays of Anuskaya series by Bradley P. Beaulieu starts with The Winds of Khalakovo.
The Kingdom of Thorn and Bone series by Greg Keyes starts with The Briar King.
The Twilight Reign series by Tom Lloyd starts with The Stormcaller.
The Mongoliad Cycle by a bunch of authors starts with The Mongoliad: Book One.
Master of Formalities by Scott Meyer.
At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald.
The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison.
I have an interest in the Scott Meyer SF book. I've read the Greg Keyes series already and I don't have much of an interest in the rest. Maybe the Lays of Anushkaya series if that proves popular.
Of those, I have Mongoliad book one. I'm not sure I'm really in the mood for it though.
I just did Master of Formalities a few weeks back and would be up for discussing it. I enjoyed it, though maybe not as much as his Magic 2.0 books. I think I still need to write that review actually. >.<
Not to derail all your other suggestions, but I was hoping to read The Last Kingdom in December, since I own like most of that series and I've really been enjoying the TV adaptation. Has anyone read the book and/or watched the show?

Same as you, Rob. Have the book, haven't read it and am really enjoying the show. Should be able to work it in for December. Also have the first couple of Mongoliad books so depending on timing I could give those a try as well.

And yet we failed to discuss it at the S&L meetup. Then again, it's not fantasy, but Historical Fiction. Close enough though. :-D

I read only the first book and liked it, it reminded me of the Vikings TV series. The protagonist and the historical background are all very interesting. I want to read the whole series but never seem to have the time for it. I'm probably going to watch the show during Christmas, with my family and then will compare the two.
The Stormcaller is in my TBR pile of stuff I physically own. However, it's currently way down the list and I wasn't going to pick it up soon (I have 3 urgent ones i want to read first, and these days I take ages to finish anything due to time constraints). But if peeps end up reading it, I'll join for that.

Rob, read the books before you watch the tv show. Some of us are not happy with the feel of the tv show.

I with you there Dara. I was hoping there would be enough interest in one of my suggestions to motivate me to read it. Need to stop buying books just because they are on sale.
Yeah, I'm kind of in a SFF slump atm, so I've been doing some non-fiction and non-SFF stuff, though mostly in audio. My reading as of late has slowed tremendously since the summer.
Rob wrote: "Yeah, I'm kind of in a SFF slump atm, so I've been doing some non-fiction and non-SFF stuff, though mostly in audio. My reading as of late has slowed tremendously since the summer."Me too, and mine too. Glad I'm not the only one!
Bill wrote: "I with you there Dara. I was hoping there would be enough interest in one of my suggestions to motivate me to read it. My obsession has lead me to D&D for the time being so I tend to read my player's handbook or monster manual and think up new characters... it's bad.
This is the slowest our group has been all year. At least we have the new Riyria book coming up.
Apart from that, my plans for December are Control Point in audio,
And either The Black Lung Captain, The Last Kingdom or Guards! Guards!. Though I'd be open to another book, especially if it's on my own and unread shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Seems like most of us are either busy, or in reading funk, but maybe Riyria and/or another read will fix that.

I thought Guards! Guards! was fun.Yeah for me this is finals and finals prep week. I'm working 8 a.m. to about midnight every day - I get small breaks during that time but its awful. I'm looking forward to Death of Dulgath. And I'd be up for reading something with the group too - I miss reading with you guys.
(Note: I'm seriously thinking about changing jobs because with the hours I put in, I make much less than minimum wage.) A lot of the issue though is I want to Mexico for a week and didn't take any school stuff - made it a real vacation. So I have some catching up to do.
I looked at your shelf Rob - I have the Cornwell book to read sometime too - well that whole series - it does look good. I read Guards! fairly recently though and would be happy to discuss it :)
I am working on finishing or catching up with a few more series this year. If I can get The End of All Things in I will have finished 7 of 10 of my reading goals for the year and would be happy with that.I didn't see anything on your shelf that matched what I am doing. Can't wait for Riyria.
The new Mistborn Bands of Mourning and the new Iron Druid Staked are both coming out late January if anyone is interested in reading those. I am planning on reading both, probably around that time.
Definitely in for Mistborn. I am only up to book 3 in the Iron Druid series so probably won't catch up by the time Staked comes out.
I'm in for both. The most recent Iron Druid was sort of disappointing, but I'll keep reading them. They are entertaining. Wish he'd go back to the original formula though
I'm gonna skip both - I haven't read any Iron Druid, and the Alloy of Law just annoyed me. Maybe I'll read through it once the series is complete, but it didn't hold my interest enough to read the next one on release date.
I agree with both of the above comments. The last Mistborn was,too preachy and Iron Druid, has declined. And yet....lol maybe they seem especially attractive to read right now because I am in the middle of finals. Cleaning house also seems attractive.
