I'm not committing to anything right now. Overwhelmed at stuff, and still trying to catch up some of the other group reads yet..

I'm not sure if you all are agreeing to read Half a War, The Fifth Season, or both..

message 573: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments Fifth Season for me.

message 574: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments both for me :)

This group has entirely too many reads now. But then, that's what it's kind of meant for, and we have a lot more members.

There is just no way I can keep up with all the reads anymore though. lol.

Kaleb gets to lead his first group discussion.. ^_^

message 577: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments Yeah, but these new ones are scheduled for late July/August, which is much sparser than the group reads schedule from now till early July. We just like to plan ahead :)

message 578: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
We still have 3 active reads, and 17 planned reads, and that doesn't cover Oct-Nov yet.

There is a lot of overlap in the next few months. I originally wanted to limit it to 1-2 books/month..but that went out the window. lol.

As long as people want to read and discuss all these books at such a pace more power to them I guess. But I've given up trying to keep pace.

And there are still books I want to read on my own as well, mostly nonfiction stuff and some graphic novels/manga.

message 579: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments Same here. I think I am going to skip the Elizabeth Bear read, given my current commitments, and the comments above about it being an average fantasy novel. Also, I don't think I can keep up this pace for the whole year :)

message 580: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I'm still planning on trying the first one. I have a bunch of audible credits to burn. I just may squeeze The Martian Chronicles in first because it's short.

Plus I'm not doing Malazan or Dagger & Coin since I've done those already.

message 581: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I'm kinda stunned by the amount of reads in the club this year but it's great to see so many people enjoying it.

message 582: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Yeah, I'd rather too many reads than too few.

The idea isn't really for everyone to do every read, but for people to have a place to read and discuss books they want to read/would be reading anyways.

But I still worry about having so many that it overwhelms people out of participating in any reads all together.

message 583: by Christina (new)

Christina Pilkington | 126 comments I'd like to do both Half a War and The Fifth Season.

When I first started joining groups, I felt overwhelmed at first, too. Everything looked so good and I wanted to join in every single buddy and group read!

I'm pretty active in about 5-7 different groups, but most of them are like this one where members set up different group or buddy reads and you can join in on the ones that interest you and that you have time to do.

By now I know that I can only do 8-10 books max a month, depending on the size of the books, so when I agree to a group read, I have a chart where I mark down the dates. That way I know how many buddy reads I'm committing to.

But, like you Rob, I also have books I want to read on my own, too, and pre-orders that I want to read the minute I can get my hands on them! So, I guess this sounds nerdy, but I schedule those books in, too, ahead of time. So some months I might only agree to do 3 BOM/buddy reads because there are 6-7 other new release books or other books on my shelf I really want to read. (I usually try to push for those to become a groups' book of the month so I can double up then!)

But even with all this said, I do tend to shift things around a bit and be flexible when I see new group reads or a book of the month that looks even better to me than something I've already scheduled to read for myself. But I always keep myself in the 8-10 book range per month because being a homeschooling mom, keeping up with cooking and the house, and slowly trying to put together my first book, that's my absolute limit!

Christina wrote: "By now I know that I can only do 8-10 books max a month"

Holy Crap I'm jealous. I'm happy if I do 6, and that normally includes 3-5 of them in audio. If I pass 6 it's because I'm doing something short like a manga or graphic novel.

I don't really recall a big release I was excited to read the day it came out that didn't have at least one of my groups reading it though.

Most of the stuff I do on my own these days are older stuff I'm trying to catch up on and/or outside of SFF all together and I'm never in a rush to do those immediately. I just fit them in where I can.

Lol! Well, 2 of those books are usually audio books. Whenever I have to clean or cook, I usually have earbuds in and am listening to a book and I go to sleep at night listening to an audio book (I just put on the sleep timer). My kids are in gymnastics so that's about 4 hours of reading time right there each week. And I usually squeeze in about two hours a day with reading during breakfast and lunch and right before bed.

When I was younger and single I'd sometimes blow through 4-5 books a week! But those days are over for quite a while now! We also are big travelers, so I can usually get some good reading in during those weeks, too. We just came back from Costa Rica about three weeks ago. Total flying time plus layovers came to about 9 hours each way, so I was able to finish one book each way plus I was able to read three more over the two weeks we were there when my kids and husband surfed and swam.

message 586: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Holy speedreader, Batman.

message 587: by Christina (new)

Christina Pilkington | 126 comments Also, one or two of the books I read each month are usually books I've read out loud to my kids. Those are usually middle grade or YA books. I don't allow myself to count them on Goodreads unless they are at least over 150 pages. I haven't read any graphic novels yet, but I'm getting more interested the more I hear others talk about them and read reviews.

message 588: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments I was in Costa Rica for 3 weeks last November, I didn't read a single book :P Well maybe 1.

I guess I'm kind of a reading addict :) I don't watch too much TV.

It kind of sounds like I didn't do anything else when I was in CR, but I swear I did! We went on lots of hikes, riverboat and coffee tours, and I swam a little bit. But I'm a BIG baby and let my husband and kids do the zip lining and surfing.

message 590: by Christina (new)

Christina Pilkington | 126 comments And I always thought I was an average to kind of fast reader until I started becoming more active on Goodreads and watching book tube videos on YouTube. A lot of people here put me to shame. I actually started thinking I might be a slow reader after all :(

I lost my 3 day old wedding ring surfing!

Don't worry, this happened to my grandmother twice (ok, substitute Florida for Costa Rica, and swimming for surfing) and I am happy to report my grandparents had a very long and happy marriage, despite the loss of rings!

:) I bought the exact ring again on Etsy. Good thing I insisted on white gold instead of platinum since I've lost every ring I've ever owned...after listening to my wife and her best friend say over and over "if you never take it off, you'll never lose it"....Showed them!!! hehe

OK. Its time for me to jump in and be the fun police. Please keep to discussing about future group reads. It's gotten off subject, largely thanks to me, but time to bring that to an end. Thanks.

Robyn | 150 comments My apologies! As my act of contrition, may I suggest The Steel Remains as a potential read, with sequels to follow? I don't see it on the shelves and it ison my TBR.

message 597: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments The Steel Remains has been on my shortlist for the last year, if we get a large group interested i'd be willing to shuffle things around, but otherwise I don't see myself starting it before August :|

message 599: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments Definitely in on half a war.

Maybe for the fifth season. Liked but didn't love her inheritance series. Depends on what else i got going on.

Up for the steel remains in late summer. Tried starting it before but other things came up.

message 600: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | 150 comments I'm happy to wait to read it, there's no shortage of good books about. I'll refloat it during the summer. Thanks for the reviews, Alex.
