Riya To discuss The Hunger Games movie- how'd it relate to the book? What'd you like about it? What would you change? Anything you want to talk about :D

message 2: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (catylynn) | 36 comments I thought they did a beautiful job keeping the integrity of the books. None of Katniss' life seemed more glamorous than it should and the Capitol was really disturbing, just like I imagined it.

message 3: by Riya (new)

Riya Definitely!!! The acting was great and I really loved how they did it. I thought it was so cool how they showed what was going on for the people managing the arena.

message 4: by Austin (new)

Austin Silcox | 58 comments I wish they had made the begining when she is in district 12 more like in the book.

message 5: by Riya (new)

Riya Yeah- they totally skimmed over Gale way too much!!! :(

message 6: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 1040 comments It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good. Books to movies never seem to go that well, but at least this one wasn't a huge disappointment :)

message 7: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (somecrazygingerkid) Not a HUGE disappointment but I still dislike how the movie industry tends to screw over how great the books are. leaving major things out (character development being a major part. some how youd think these actors and actresses could fake it alittle better with the emotion values), then they sorta PG'd it more so then in the book. im sorry I mustve read to fast or something but I remember it being a bit more brutal then how the movie was. Just my opinion.

Caitlin Lillie (kiwibookworm) | 28 comments Riya wrote: "Yeah- they totally skimmed over Gale way too much!!! :("

And they completely left out Madge :(
It was pretty good but I wish that movies would stay even closer to the book.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 1040 comments Hopefully you all agree, but I think Lord of the Rings is one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen :)

That and probably the Harry Potter series.

message 11: by Riya (new)

Riya Definitely- Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were all awesome movies and books!!! Has anyone read HOles, cause I only saw the movie and I thought it was great!

Great call!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

For me they didn't make you hate the game makers as much as they did in the books. All in all is was a pretty good movie relating to the book. It left some key stuff out as most movies do but it wasn't terrible in my opinion. Looking forward to the next two.

Haven't read Lord of the Rings yet, on the third Harry Potter book.

Daniela | 429 comments I used to LOVE the movie Holes when i was younger! I only found out that it's a book recently and was completely mind-blown.

message 15: by Riya (new)

Riya Haha- did you actually read the book then?

message 16: by Daniela (new)

Daniela | 429 comments Haven't been able to get around to it yet, so many books to read!

message 17: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Griffin (nessagriffin) | 7 comments I loved the cast! And that's very rare of me to say... Usually I hate the cast because it's diferent from the image in my head but this time the cast was perfect to me...

message 18: by Dusty (new)

Dusty Crabtree (dustycrabtree) | 9 comments I loved the cast too, although I think Peeta should've been a tad more handsome than Gale considering the end choice. He did grow on me, though. :) With books to movies, you just have to know it's never going to be as good as the book and go in knowing and accepting that. With that in mind, I think they did an awesome job and CAN'T WAIT for Catching Fire to come out!

You can see my full thoughts about the movie on my blog: http://dustycrabtree.wordpress.com/20...

message 19: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Still | 6 comments I hate that they got some really easy things wrong... Color of the cat, peeta losing a leg!, where she got the mockingjay pin from, etc. When reading the book I said to myself "man.. This movie would be so easy to produce because just tear out a page and you have all you need"... I do hope thru do better with the other movies...

Christina | 33 comments Riya wrote: "Definitely- Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were all awesome movies and books!!! Has anyone read HOles, cause I only saw the movie and I thought it was great!"

I've read Holes. It's been a while, but it was a book I bought after I read it which means that I thought it was good enough to want to read it again. :) What I remember most is that it was well-crafted, perhaps predictable (especially if you've seen the movie), but I loved how it introduced all these random strings of plot and then tied them all up nice and neat at the end.

message 21: by Riya (new)

Riya Awesome, I definitely plan on reading it sometime then. Anyways, back to the Hunger Games. I overall like the cast. Once I saw the movie I realized how perfectly they fit their parts- someone needs to explain to me though how you can choose Josh Hutcherson over Liam Hemsworth!!!! Like how can you not love Gale even more after this movie?!?!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I disliked the extra emphasis on the romance and the camera work was really annoying. Katniss was also too pale and too clean compared to my expectations. Hope the next is better.

message 23: by shrish (new)

shrish (orshay) You know, the only problem I had with this otherwise good movie, was that Katniss wasn't portrayed as the strong character she is.

message 24: by Riya (new)

Riya Well considering she's gonna become weak mush in the third book it doesn't really matter :P

message 25: by Bao (new)

Bao Li | 20 comments I not like hunger games cast much. Jennifer lawrence not very pretty; but plain. Not look like Katniss! Peeta boring like small yappy dog, annoying. Their tutor alright, he look his part like a drunk!

Jack D. (anthonyburgess) | 3 comments Riya wrote: "To discuss The Hunger Games movie- how'd it relate to the book? What'd you like about it? What would you change? Anything you want to talk about :D"

I thought they actually did a pretty god job sticking to the plot. Of course there were little things here and there that i didn't like, but that happens with every book-movie.

It's actually very different from what I had imagined it to be (especially the capitol), but in a good way. I think there was bit too much focus on the romance for my taste. I know it was part of the story, but that just isnt what interests me.

message 27: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 23, 2013 07:59AM) (new)

I think the writing was AMAZING, but the plot could've been better. And I think the movie did a pretty bad job, honestly. Lol

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I really disliked the movie. The casting was "meh." I mean- none of them looked malnurished or dirty and that is how they are discribed in the book. How hard is it to find a stinkin' yellow cat?! And why did they change where Katniss got the pin from? Doesn't she bond with Madge over her aunt being in the games? Isn't that why she is at the mayor's house in another book and overhears a conversation she shouldn't? Maybe I am forgetting something, but I feel like Madge was a pretty important person in another book. Also PEETA LOST HIS FREAKING LEG! How are they going to fit that into the next movie? I did not enjoy seeing things from the game maker's POV- I do not want someone to try to convince me that he is a good guy and was trying to help Katniss and Peeta- UM NO HE IS A CREEP. I would have much preferred only having Katniss' POV like in the book. I also have heard from people that didn't read the book that they wish more things were explained in the movie: why was it bad that Gale and Katniss were in the forrest? Why couldn't Katniss sell the squirrel/bird/whatever she shot? Why was Gale's name in the bowl so many times? Why was Katniss' mother so harsh and why did Katniss seem to not like her? Tons of tiny wholes in the plot. I am not even looking forward to the other movies. /rant

Bao Li | 20 comments Ashley, I know Katniss looked very fat in the movie!! And Peeta too. The only 'good looking' man is Gale, maybe. Man who plays Peeta very strange too, and cross-eyed!!

I not think Peeta lost leg in this movie, don't think they include this from the books. I know, not much explained in the movie! Was bad, I only knew because I read books first. I always read books first and then see movie. But without books, movie not explained enough.

Maybe they better in Catching fire movie?!

To be completely honest, I don't even want to see Catchnig Fire or Mockingjay!! I feel like they are just going to get worse and worse!

Bao Li | 20 comments You no want see other two? I understand! But you not know if they good if you don't see!
I want see, because maybe they good now? Maybe they make better than first??

Sorry my English not very good!

message 32: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 2 comments The movie was boring and the book wasn't much better. I think it would've been a lot better if Katniss was a bit more realistic and the characters from the movie fit the descriptions in the books.

I don't think I will pay to see the other movies, maybe I will watch them when they come out on DVD. I'm just saying, I'm not holding my breath thinking they are going to get better...

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Amelia wrote: "Ashley - you do realize you're still paying if you only get it on DVD, right? ;)"

Yeah but if I get it from Redbox it's only $1! :)

Lots of my friends do, but I not. I want give money for creator. It not fair to steal the work.

message 36: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 5 comments Honestly, the only things that I thought they shouldn't have left out in The Hunger Games movie is Madge's character and the Avoxes. Madge, although mostly a "background" character, is very important to the plot. She is the one who gave Katniss her mockingjay pin, not some random old woman in the hob. Her being the Mayor's daughter is also quite relevant to the story. I also thought the Avox girl should have been included in the movie. Although her character isn't crucial, it clearly demonstrates the Capitol's brutality.

Other than that, I thought the movie was absolutely amazing! Jen wasn't exactly like how I pictured Katniss while reading the books, but she is a fantastic actor, and I thought that she portrayed the character excellently. The storyline was kept almost identical to the book (with some exceptions, of course, but no movie can be exactly like the book without being 10 hours long). They also did a great job of portraying the people in the Capitol in contrast with the people of District 12. Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much, and I'm super excited to see the Catching Fire movie! I can already tell from the trailer that it will be amazing, as well.

message 37: by Bao (new)

Bao Li | 20 comments Is not random old woman, is Greasy Sae!! Good friend of Katniss and Gale, buys wild dog and put in soup! Better Madge, I agree, give Katniss bird trinket. But not important person, Madge.

Avox girl was in movie too! See long red hair girl at house in capital who brings drink!!

Melanie | 5 comments I disagree with the comments about weight. First of all, Jennifer Lawrence is not overweight at all. She's also not skinny at all. She has a great body, and her weight is what it should be - healthy. Now, of course, I understand that Katniss would be much skinnier than she is... so would everyone living in District 12. But that's because they're STARVING. You can't ask all of the actors to starve themselves for the movie. That's just wrong. And if they were to have very skinny actors in the movie, then some kids and teens watching the movie would get a negative message from seeing that.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Sure you can ask actors to starve themselve. That's why they get paid millions of dollars. If they won't/cant they should find someone else to fit the part. But Jennifer Lawrence looks fine the way she is.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Amelia wrote: "Nah Jen is not overweight, she's still chubby though. As you said, for a normal chick, she's totally right. Just not for Katniss, and she's portraying Katniss so - er - she doesn't really fit the r..."

I agree- tons of actors/actresses diet for roles. For instance, Hugh Jackman lost huge amounts of weight for his role in Les Miserables, because that is the character he agreed to play: a starved, beaten, prisoner.

Yes, I said the Avox girl wasn't a crucial part of the story. It was just something I personally wished they had put in the movie in more detail.

I don't see any problem with them choosing to let Peeta keep his leg, or of casting actors that are healthy and will send a good message. Yes, actors do add and drop their weight for roles sometimes - but /should/ they? It's very bad for their bodies and for their health. And I think you guys are picturing an actor for Katniss who is skinny in a supermodel way. Well, that is not how it is for people who are starving. It would be very bad, unhealthy, and unattractive. I would hope that you wouldn't want actors to make themselves that way for a role.

message 42: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 5 comments Amelia wrote: "I wish I actually knew what they did to lose so much weight in such a short time.. it seems impossible for most people, yet actors/tresses don't seem to have such a problem with it.

That's my point. You can NOT lose (or gain) a drastic amount of weight in a very short time HEALTHILY. Actors who do that undergo extremely strict, stressful, and incredibly unhealthy diets and even starvation. It is not easy for them. It IS a problem for them. Actors do not have some magical bodies that can go to whatever weight they want. Their bodies aren't any different from ours.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not like they do it overnight. They dont just get the role and start filming. They have time to prepare for it.

message 44: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 5 comments “I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner,” says the Oscar-nominated actress. “That’s something I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong — not thin and underfed.” —Jennifer Lawrence

And this is why she is a fantastic role model.

They have nutritionists and dietitians and personal trainers that help them loose the weight they need to lose (or gain) for different roles. It is monitered by more than one person. A "normal" person imply can't afford to invest that kind of time/money/energy into lookng a certain way for a role. Looking a certain way for a part is a part of their JOB- if they don't do it, they can get fired.

message 46: by Brianna (new)

Brianna It seems that when i was watching the movie I was comparing the two.
Like in the movie I realized they left out Madge :'(

(I know that there's another thread for just Catching Fire but this is comparing)
