Jo and Mattie

I think they were two entirely different types of love. I think Jo was his "one and only true love". He was overwhelmed with grief and loss when he came across Mattie. I think a lot of his love for her was founded on his need or desire to help her. He saw her being dragged through the mud at every turn, when what he saw in her was a beautiful young mother doing the best she could to raise her daughter. I don't think he ever loved her like he did Jo, but I think he experienced a much different sort of love- a love that he could only experience because he had lost his soul mate. I am not sure that it lessened his love for Jo in any way. That is just my ineterpretation of it. :)
