Fola I really liked the book but I think they just didn't translate it correctly into the movie.

Sara I absolutely loved the book. (Just to note, I am not a Stephenie Meyer's cultist, I read this book after Twilight and could not believe it was the same author) I watched the movie and was appalled. One of the worst book to movie adaptions...ever. I felt like I completely wasted my time watching that garbage. The worst part is, unless you've read the book (I watched it with a friend who has yet to read it) most of the movie will make zero sense to you, because it is so different from the book. Book to movie adaptions are usually different, I get that...but that...that was pure garbage in my opinion. I've come to the conclusion for those who haven't read the book, but liked the movie, have been completely brainwashed by hollywood. I was so angry at how much they destroyed one of my favorite books, because it legitimately is one of my favorites.

Katie watling this is my favourite book and i love it so much! i couldn't wait for the film to come out as all the trailers looked great and i loved the soundtrack, but after i watched i was so disappointed! they missed a lot out and the connection between Melanie and Wanda was lost as well as the love between Wanda and Ian, i loved their connection in the book but they just didn't quite grasp it on screen. i completely agree that whoever hasn't read the book will like the film and whoever has read the book won't, such a shame, it turned out like the horrible Twilight from book to film situation and was ruined.

Kaleigh Ward BOOK WAS WAY BETTER! You guys should go join the book club thing its called Book Addict, it's one of my groups. Just go to my profile to see!

☽Ƹɱɱɑ☾ I watched the movie first, and promptly fell in love with it. After that, I started the book. I read about half of the book before I really got into it, but after that I was hooked. I really enjoyed the details that the movie didn't have, and I loved reading about her life on the other planets! Also, the book included more of Melanie's commentaries.

I have to say that the book is way better than the movie, even though I love the movie.

Ariana I felt like the book was so much better than the movie. In the book we could see the connections between the characters more fully. For example, I feel like the idea of Ian and Wanda's was changed. In the book, the relationship is an unknown territory for Wanda. She doesn't understand the relationship because of all the chaos going on in her head, and later realizes that she loves him. Whereas in the movie, you think that they immediately start liking each other. I also liked that the book was more gradual.

Amanda Spanton I can honestly say that I enjoyed both. I read the book before I saw the movie. And though, yes, they did leave things from the book out or changed a few little details around, you have to understand that no one will go and sit through a three to four hour movie in theaters. Every page of a script equals one minute of screen time and sometimes, they have to remove things from the book in order to make it into a movie. I do agree that a lot of the time they take out things that really would help the movie along and keep it along the lines of the book. But in this case, I truly have to disagree. No, you didn't see the full build up of the bond between Melanie and Wanderer, but it was there and it was fully understood. Knowing all about the planet's that Wanderer had been to was not pertinent information to the movie. It's made VERY clear in the beginning when she is first inserted that she has seen MANY planets, knowing about those planets is not going to change a viewers opinion of her. No, you didn't see ALL of the interaction between Ian and Wanderer that led to their attraction and Wanderer's learning to understand all the emotions she was feeling. But it also was NOT an instant 'I love you' scenario either. You saw the struggle Ian went through with his own emotions in regards to Wanderer as well as her struggle to completely trust all of them, to include Ian. Regardless of the few details that were left out and the few details that were switched a little to maintain the flow of events in the movie, in comparison to a LOT of the book-to-movie films out there, this one was very well done. And I would highly recommend both to anyone who asks.

Kelly i first saw the movie and that motivated me to read the book. Because i really liked the movie.
While reading the book i realised that the book was really better than the movie. but hey, the book is always better than the movie. And for that i think that the movie is not that bad compared with other books/movies.
It's just that the book made me love Ian a lot more. He was so handsome in the books, what the movies didn't show that way.
Soo, the book wins, obviously! :D

Jordan the book was good. Stephenie Meyer is a lyrical writer or very in depth, but she does write good stories. However, the movie adaptation of The Host wasn't very good, and that's not because it could never do well in movie, I just think that some aspects were iffy, for want of a better word. But the movie was good on it's own if you haven't read the book.

Emily Hays I really loved the book, I got completely hooked after the first chapter. If it wasn't for school I would've have finished it a lot faster then I did. After hearing bad reviews from friends who had paid to see it in theaters I just watched it online.
I have to agree completely that the movie completely trashed the book. How long did it take for Wanda and Ian to fall in love? Oh about three seconds! The relationships in the movie were so forced that it completely took away all character development.
Was disappointed me the most was that after watching many interviews with the cast I knew that Stephanie spent a lot of time dedicating herself to working on this movie (kinda like the first Twilight, whereas the other Twilight movies she wasn't as involved). I guess Stephanie Meyer just shouldn't write screenplay or her books shouldn't be turned into movies at all. She works so much inside her character's minds that it just doesn't work.
What also has bothered me since the movie is that now everyone is talking about a sequel when the book doesn't need one at all. It seems so stupid to write a sequel and I think that it would just ruin the first.

Kat I mean it's been a while since I've last read the book, but I've read it many times before. I just saw the movie and I thought it probably the best book to movie adaptation yet. I mean the Melanie and Wanda actresses in the movie didn't exactly match my own idea of what they should look like, but I got over that and thought it was great. I love them both, movie and book. Meyer is really lucky to be able to produce her own books into movies. I wish all authors were so lucky.

message 12: by Tom (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tom Farrelly I thought the movie was terrible & could of been so much more guttered that it weren't because i did really like the book. Maybe it could be remade later down the line like they do most films nowadays & do it the right way it should be.

bad points for the movie
.thought it was rushed
.acting was terrible
.people to play the characters where totally wrong in my opinion

Good points
.visually was really good
.places represented exactly as the book said

that's all i can really think of people will have two minds to this though, this is just my opinion.

Angel Shears I loved this book and watched the movie knowing they were going to have to leave a lot out because it was a long book. I agree with many posts they left out of the movie my favorite parts like the Ian/Wanda relationship and the back and forth between Melanie and Wanda. But... I still enjoyed the movie and my whole family watched it and enjoyed as a just a movie. I don't think a movie can ever live up to a book because the reason I read is to imagine the characters and scene while I read you can't do that with a movie.

message 14: by Fola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fola When I first saw who they got for playing Wanda/Melanie I was like WHAT?? she just didn't look like what i pictured. But the rest of the people look fine. The place looked just liked I picked it in the movie so that was great.

message 15: by Mirkat (new) - added it

Mirkat I thought that the film was pretty faithful to the book. Certain aspects of the narrative were condensed by necessity (or else the film would have been five days long! :P). One example of condensing that I appreciated in the movie was where Wanda grabbed some cryotanks during her doctor's (er, Healer's) visit, so that we didn't need a whole separate scene for obtaining cryotanks.

Gabriela Araujo I thought movie was pretty faithful to the book too, I'm surprised that most of the people here doesn't think so.

I still prefer the book, obviously, and I can agree that the story in the movie was bit a confused because in the book we can develop the story way better, but I think the adaptation was satisfatory enough.

Sana Rashid god it was a horrible movie...n i imagined Melanie to be prettier...

message 18: by Cam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cam Im kind of sad that the movie did not include Walter. I think he was one of the most important reasons they accepted Wanda. Her showing how much she cared for him and all. Just my opinion.

I agree

Cassie 'The Thinker Go Go Go Go' Mis. Roben Goodfellow'\Isabelle Lightwood OMG I just saw the movie a little while ago and it was HORRABLE!!!! They didn't translate it well at all!!!! They didn't go into detail with the whole Jared\Ian\Wanda\ Mel thing at all. And what the heck happened?! NO CHEATO'S!!! NONE!! And the ending?!! wholey cow! IT WAS LIKE THEY JUST MADE KYLE OUT TO BE A BIG OL' JERK AND HE NEVER GOT THE CHANCE TO REDEAM HIMSELF!!! Like in the book, he started to like that one chick umm Sunny or whatever her name was and he was becoming nicer! In the movie they were all like 'yeah, we don't like you at all so we're not even going to let Sunny (or whoever she was) in so you'll just be a big ol' jerk and no one's going to like you ha ha!' People!!!!! NOT Nice!!! yes I don't care much for Kyle but in the movie at the end I actauly felt sorry for him! wow.... well I think that's it untill i come up with more!

Shirl I have to agree with Amanda! I read the book and just watched the movie. really liked the boook and while all the details couldn,t be putinto a movie, it did tell the story well. You could feel all of the emotions that were in the story. They did a great job making it!

Niamh the book was AMAZING, one of the best books out there however the movie SUCKED and i think that they couldn't get the mental part of the story into the film and they cut out all the bits about the diffreant worlds and whats in them. Also Ian was nothing like what i imagined in my head and Pet (wandas knew body) wasn't young at all in the movie. They also didn't use the best line in the book about Wanda feeling like her core was moving when she was saying goodbye to Ian. yeah and i agree with Cassie what the mint chocolate chip were they thinking then they got rid of Summer? Kyle just a bully in the movie yet in the book i actually liked him at the end. and they didn't show that they seeker lady was actually a good soul it was the person that was annoying. so it didn't really give her a chance to explain herself. another thing they got wrong was the bit at the hotel place where they see that souls are keeping there babies human which i thought was really inpressive in the book. I was really upset because i was really looking forward to the movie and the only really good bit was the song RADIOACTIVE at the end. I honestly think they just did it wrong. I can't believe you people are saying its the best book to movie adaptation (i mean hello lord of the rings!)I have to say desite all that that Wanda/Melanie actor was amazing. To be honest i don't know what they could have done to make it better because i think it was a very mental book that got to your mind and thats hard to show on the big screen. Maybe they should have just left it as a book.

Niamh Emily wrote: "I really loved the book, I got completely hooked after the first chapter. If it wasn't for school I would've have finished it a lot faster then I did. After hearing bad reviews from friends who had..."

yep i agree it does not need a sequel at all. its a stand alone book and stephine needs to realize that instead of thinking MONEY MONEY MONEY

Angeline Joseph I thought the movie was really good until I read the book, then I wasn't so sure. So my verdict is, if you read the book before seeing the movie, the movie's gonna suck.

Courtney Davis I would've been so confused if I hadn't read the book

message 26: by Monica (last edited Sep 01, 2013 11:14PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Monica The first time I read the book, I was confused until I got to page 60, then smooth sailing! Then I read the book a 2nd time for pleasure. The third reading a year or two later was like visiting a favorite friend. I knew the movie couldn't do it justice, but I needed to see how they'd translate the Wanda/Melanie dual identity and I especially wanted to "see" the cavern where everyone lived! The crops, the mirrors, the underground river. The book is a "10" but the movie scored a "4" for me.

As for a sequel? No. The book had a great ending. Folks who only saw it at the movies need to read the book for closure.

Violet Book was way way WAY better. Not to say the movie sucked. It did nt. it was ok.thats saying if you've read the book ofcourse..you ll be disappointed, but you'll get the movie.
The cast was really almost spot on. Except for their choice for Wanda(pet) seriously! ? Emily Browning? So does not suite WANDA, more like ...Dakota Fanning, but
Anyway, the cast was really good, visuals were really really good.
Just that it was wayyyy to rushed, hence character building /relationships , plot formation was ruined. Wrecked ;( so it seemed a little ridiculous. Also Wanda and Mels relationship is much better portrayed in the book, you really connect with them. Saoroise (excuse the spelling ) did a really good job, but it was all much too rushed, considering the time limit I don't blame them.. Sometimes the book is just plain better.

Violet Niamh wrote: "the book was AMAZING, one of the best books out there however the movie SUCKED and i think that they couldn't get the mental part of the story into the film and they cut out all the bits about the ..." totally agree. LOTR rocks.

Euraylie It was always going to difficult to make a movie which depends on so much dialogue between two souls inhabiting one body, but it could have been done.
This movie just felt very amateurish to me despite an otherwise good director and a good cast.
I hated that they wanted to make it more action-y by constantly cutting back to the seeker and her road team. Also, I'm assuming the budget just wasn't there.
I went to see it will non-book readers and they all hated it.

— Massiel I really loved the movie, but the book was more better, they are so many facts like the dead of the characters, they don't explain anything, they just kill and that's all, and so they change so scenes but that always happen.

I really loved the movie, but i prefer the book.

Saxonjus Kaelyn wrote: "Camille wrote: "Im kind of sad that the movie did not include Walter. I think he was one of the most important reasons they accepted Wanda. Her showing how much she cared for him and all. Just my o..."

No Walter in the film? He was a pivotal character in the book! I loved The Host & many people avoid it because of Twilight series.Im not convinced re the film its why I chose not to watch it.I couldn't visualise how they would portray the complex personalities, the inner struggle between Wanda & Melanie! Or even The awful woman hunting Melanie/Wanda who could have played her?
For me the book a great read.

Mais Garah After reading the book I got so excited for the movie. I thought the novel had so much potentials. Anyway, watching the movie was simply heart breaking. I was very disappointed and The movie made absolutely no sense at all to my cousin who was watching it with me. What a waste!!! :(

Alison James thE BOOK was awesome yet the movie sucked. really mad.
waste of my life.

Ladynight I hated the movie, so bored........

message 37: by Gary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gary I enjoyed the movie but feel if you hadn't read the book you would be pretty lost. It didn't come close to the depth of the relationship in the book.
I'm hoping for a sequel to the book.

Alison James i am looking foreward to a sequel too. when will she write it?????

Steven If you like romance style writing then you will enjoy the book more then the movie. I do not so I did not like the book, I put it down and returned it after about 3 chapters. I found the movie somewhat less nauseating. However, the acting was amateurish and many of the scenes felt contrived.

Alison James the acting was bad, i was so disappointed that we were making fun of it. i didnt really feel any true romance though.

message 41: by Judi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Judi I loved the book and i loved the movie and while i missed Walter i think they did a great job for the amount of time they had to get the story out there . If you look at the ratio of pages to script this movie would have been a 4 to 6 hour movie and while yes "twilight Series " did amazing .. you have to remember this was her First book and no one read it until they read Twilight Series and many that did read it thought it sucked .. So the Studios were within their rights to make a choppy version as who knew how it would turn out ... If people would see it let alone try and read it as it is a long book that did take me 3 chapters to get into it but i made it and if others gave it a chance would see how amazing this book really is ..

Delia Colvin I absolutely LOVED the book! And I agree with Sara-the writing was SO different from Stephenie Meyer and Twilight Saga. I thought I saw another name associated with The Host but that may have been the screenplay.

After reading the book I couldn't get the characters out of my mind.

Wasn't crazy about the movie. The actress that was cast for the body for the new Wanda was NOTHING like the book and I just found that there was no chemistry between the new Wanda and Ian.

Also the book created this longing to see Melanie and...can't think of the main love interest. I felt like we jumped to Wanda and Ian in the end. Would have liked a little more of Melanie there.

Delia Colvin Judi wrote: "I loved the book and i loved the movie and while i missed Walter i think they did a great job for the amount of time they had to get the story out there . If you look at the ratio of pages to scr..."

Sarakburns wrote: "I adored the movie so much!!! I'm not sure, I don't think the book really caught my attention. it was boring and it dragged on forever, this is probably the first time I have ever chosen the movie ..."

Hi Judi, I totally agree! They did just an AMAZING job of translating Twilight!

I believe Stephenie Meyer produced The Host and I believe this was her second project. Not sure if I'm right on that.

no i loved the trailer and was also really excited but i was disappointing with the film :(

Majka I enjoyed both. It is always the same, movie can´t be as good as a book. Book in every way is better, all emotions, thoughts..these things are not in movie...but also you can´t put 600 pages of great book to 2 hours in movie...but i really loved the book, something so different from other romance...

Kenneth Campbell I think the worst part about the movie is that the characters that play Ian and Jared look so much alike that, and even Kyle looks like them a little, that in the dark parts they all look the same. So Wanda/Mel kissing Ian or Jared? Who knows.

Kirsteen Gordon The film could have been every bit as good as the book but sadly was a rushed, glossed over, teen film. The book could have easily been translated into a decent film choosing characters and settings that had CHARACTER. Whatever happened to the saying a picture tells a thousand words? The caves....the floors were level, brightly lit, had huge doorways and were obviously man made in a studio. No portrayal of the intense suffering Wanda had to endure in the hole. Characters...where was the passion, hatred in the cave. Without that you have no contrast of how Jeb won almost everyone over and the likes of Walter stood up for Wanda even against his own kind. There was no tension and Kyle and Ian should have been terrifying. The seekers had more feelings in them than most of the "human" cast which is another huge failing. There was no need for fancy silver cars and bikes if time and money had been spent elsewhere. What happened to the cabin in the middle of nowhere where Melanie and Jarred felt safe...a caravan???? Where were the suburban settings of hosts going about their business and the clinching scene in the car park where Jarred finally believes in Wanda and has to strike her face with a rock knowing this is a cruel thing to do? I would like to see this film remade and the only character I would keep would be Melanie. Jeb and his sister were capable but completely under used.

Linda I enjoyed both book and film. book you get their thoughts in detail you cannot do that with film so i feel that they did a very good job describing the features of the story.
