Turtlecollector Dennis Hi. I can't wait to start this game, but I would rather not be captain unless no one else wants to. I have a lot going on right now.

Camilla (cyqua) Hi everybody! So excited to play again :)

I wouldn't mind being captain unless someone else wants to :)

I've played all three previous rounds, how about you?

And where are you all from? I'm originally from Denmark, but am currently living in Barcelona, Spain, so my time zone is GMT+2, but I'm usually on at all hours :)

Turtlecollector Dennis I've played them as well.

I live in Oregon USA so my time zone is Pacific Daylight Time(PDT) right now. I work Tues-Sat at a library so I check in a lot and then keep my laptop logged on with GR pretty much all day Sun/Mon.

I am a fast reader and get through about 6-7 books per week usually. Although that is going to slow down a bit soon since I am about to start Don Quixote.

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Hi! I've never played before so this is new to me. I live in Pennsylvania USA.

Turtlecollector Dennis Anyone have ideas about a team name besides our city? I am not very creative in that respect. I am perfectly fine with Camilla being captain.

Does anyone have a preference on how to choose a letter each week? I am pretty flexible since I work in a library and usually don't have too much difficulty finding a book to fit a letter. The bonus is what sometimes causes me difficulty.

Also, just a heads up for the team. I will be out of town at a work conference all day on Friday when the first word and bonus is called so I won't be able to pick a book until Saturday morning. Shouldn't affect the team any, I'll take whatever letter I need to, but just wanted to let everyone know why I would not be checking in right away.

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments I'm okay with Camilla being captain too. Since I'm new and this is my first time playing I don't really know how it all works.

message 10: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Hi Brittany and TC!

I've always played on teams where we just did a "first come - first serve" sort of thing, which works really well for me as I usually also always have something for each letter.

Brittany, basically, each Friday, Jenne will call the Word of the Week (WoW) and a bonus word. If the WoW is "FIST" (example), we need to divided the letters between us, so that one person reads a book that matches each letter in the word.
You then get additional points for finding the Wow itself (e.g. fist) AND the bonus word in the book as well. And former rounds have shown that getting both bonus points is more or less essential if you're aiming for a win ;)

Some teams prefer to have some kind of rotation, so you know that each week you will be reading the first, second, third or fourth letter in advance (but of course, you won't know what it is until that Friday)

Other teams (like I have done before) have just done it so that after the word is called on Fridays, you just write which letter you prefer and then it's "first come, first serve" - usually though, people are able to move things around or have several options, so that everybody gets to read what they want :)

I never plan my books until I start reading and I'm very flexible, so for me that is the best solution, but I'm happy to do something more structured if that is the team's preference :)

And Brittany, please feel free to ask any questions! We're all here to have fun and help each other have a good time and find new fun books to read! :)

message 11: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments That sounds easy and tons of fun. I'm okay doing it either way, either first come first serve or as a rotation.

Now for whatever letter is get, the book I read has to start with that letter right?

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments ************Test post, this is around the time I'll call the word on Fridays****************

message 13: by Camilla (last edited Jul 16, 2013 07:25AM) (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany wrote: "Now for whatever letter is get, the book I read has to start with that letter right?"

Yes, the letter you get has to match either the:
Title of the book (excluding A, An and The)
Author's initials (first, last or middle)
Series name (excluding A, An and The)

As for the WoW is has to be an exact match! Meaning if it's "Quit", then it has to that form, not quitting, quitter or quits.

With the bonus word, Jenne is more large and will accept most forms of the word :)

And you can find the WoW and bonus word either in the text of the book or the cover if it's an object

Me either, unfortunately :) Obviously it could be something to do with Miami, but I know nothing other than the Dolphins, South Beach and Horatio Cane! LOL!

Turtlecollector Dennis The first thing I thought of about Miami was CSI too:)

Possible names:

Swimming in Books
Book Detectives

message 16: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Beach Babe Bookies?

Turtlecollector Dennis That's cute, Brittany. I like that better than mine.

message 18: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Thanks! I went off your South Beach suggestion.

message 19: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany wrote: "Beach Babe Bookies?"

I like that too! :)

message 20: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Btw, did you both get PMs from Catherine as well? I was just wondering since she hasn't checked in here in the thread :)

message 21: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments I went through and sent a pm to everyone who's not checked in this morning. I know she's posted over at the discussion thread since teams went up.

message 22: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments I haven't gotten one from her. Is that the name you both would like to use?

message 23: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Jul 16, 2013 12:05PM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis I got a PM from her when the teams first were posted, but haven't heard form her since.

I think we should go with Brittany's name for the team.

message 24: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I think we should go with that name too :)

message 25: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 880 comments ok...I have been sleeping I guess! lol missed this getting put up :)

Catherine | 880 comments Hi there!

message 28: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Camilla, are you going to be Captain? I'd volunteer but I've never played haha

message 29: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I'm happy to be captain! Just wanted to make sure you were all ok with it :)

So, are we all agreed that our name will be Beach Babe Bookies and I will be captain? Then I will post in the main thread for Jenne :)

message 30: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Sounds good to me!

Turtlecollector Dennis Great for me as well!

message 32: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 880 comments cool :)

message 33: by Camilla (last edited Jul 18, 2013 03:24AM) (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I've told Jenne of our name change :)

Are you all ready for the first word to be called tomorrow?! I'm really excited and have no plans this weekend, so lots of time for reading :)

Btw, I just realised that I will be away on holiday next week (for the word that is called on the 26th), but will be able to check in sometime over the weekend and just pick up whichever letter is left. Just so you know why I might be a bit absent that week :)

Also, just skimming through some of the other teams' threads, I realised we haven't really talked about how competitive/secretive we want to be?
In previous rounds, some teams have not shared their book choices until they've finished reading in order to not help other teams (especially in weeks with difficult letters/bonus words).

How competitive are you all? :) Are we going hardcore for the win or just taking it as it comes and not worry too much about helping the other teams?

I think for me personally, I prefer to do our best to have a chance at winning, meaning we try very hard to read books that will give the team all the bonus points, but I'm not too bothered about being secretive :)

What do you all think? :)

message 34: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments I definitely want to try for the win! So any strategy suggestion would work. Lol.

Have we figured out if we are just going to randomly pick a letter from the word of the week or rotate, etc?

message 35: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I think we decided on the first come, first pick with flexibility in case someone can't find the letter they're left with.

Usually, the way we've done it in my previous teams, you write something like "I have books S and E with both bonus words, but prefer S" or something to that effect.

message 36: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Sounds good to me!

message 37: by Camilla (last edited Jul 19, 2013 06:32AM) (new)

Camilla (cyqua) And the first word is UP:

HERE WE GO!

Word of the Week:
Nest

Bonus:
Newspaper

N:
E: Camilla
S: Brittany
T: Turtlecollector

message 38: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) I have books for all the letters with both bonus words, but I would prefer the E :)

message 39: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments Ok, I am still looking. Both bonus words? LOL can you tell I'm a first time player?! Haha

message 40: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany wrote: "Ok, I am still looking. Both bonus words? LOL can you tell I'm a first time player?! Haha"

No worries, Brittany, you'll quickly get the hang of it :)
Basically, you should look for books that match the letters of course and preferably contain both the words "nest" and "newspaper" :)

message 41: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) And if anyone needs book suggestions or help finding books, I'm happy to help :)

message 42: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments I have a book that starts with "S" and one that starts with "T".

Turtlecollector Dennis I managed to check in by phone on my commute to my conference. I actually brought a book to start reading on my breaks that will work for T. (with both bonuses) But I can wait to choose a book tomorrow if someone else needs T.

message 44: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments No i dont have a preference. And I can't figure out how to tell if it has both bonuses lol

message 45: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Turtlecollector wrote: "I managed to check in by phone on my commute to my conference. I actually brought a book to start reading on my breaks that will work for T. (with both bonuses) But I can wait to choose a book tom..."

That's great! I think you should get the T, so you can start reading :) I can pick up whichever letter might be left in case Catherine doesn't have an N book

message 46: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany, that leaves you with the S - is that ok? It has both bonuses? :)

message 47: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany wrote: "No i dont have a preference. And I can't figure out how to tell if it has both bonuses lol"

Brittany, are you reading regular books or e-books?

If you're reading regular books, you can go to Amazon and find your book, and use the "Search inside this book" feature. Then it will tell you whether the word is somewhere in the book.

If you read ebooks, you should be able to do a search on your reader :)

message 48: by Brittany Lynn (new)

Brittany Lynn | 449 comments S is fine with me. I can't tell if it has both bonuses though LOL i have a kindle if that helps. haha

message 49: by Camilla (last edited Jul 19, 2013 07:03AM) (new)

Camilla (cyqua) Brittany wrote: "S is fine with me. I can't tell if it has both bonuses though LOL i have a kindle if that helps. haha"

OK, which Kindle do you have? There should be a search function - if you search inside a specific book (while you have it open), you can find words in that specific book. If you search while you're in the menu, you can search for words in all your books.

That way, you will get a list of books on your Kindle that contain a specific word and choose from those books :)

Once I know which Kindle you have, I can be more specific about how to do it :)
