I get confused. If the book comes with a map then I can pretty much guarantee I'm not going to like it.

message 1952: by Tati (new)

Tati I never, ever look at the map

I don't either. but the really high fantasy books all come with them. it's like a little flag at the front of the book 'You're not going to understand me Sarah!'

message 1954: by Tati (last edited Feb 02, 2015 08:49AM) (new)

Tati Well, historical fiction also comes with maps, and some of them are not familiar at all to me. For instance, the historical fictions set in post-Roman Empire Britain, with names like Dumnonia, Powys and whatnot.

Granted, you can compare them to real maps, but the names are very different

Oh dear me, I wouldn't have a clue. I have a big black hole in my brain when it comes to both history and geography, I don't get it at all.

message 1957: by Tati (new)

Tati I love History and Geography, but map reading is my weakest point. Really, I suck at it, navigating a new place is a nightmare for me

I'm awful at giving directions when someone else is driving, I know what I mean, but because I get my left and right mixed up, I'm useless. It usually disolves into 'go that way!', 'no! that way!'

rachel, x (typedtruths) | 8401 comments Oh that's a shame guys! I personally adore YA high fantasy. I loved the Graceling series but haven't given any adult ones a try yet. :)

rachel, x (typedtruths) | 8401 comments I got a copy of Royal Wedding A Princess Diaries Novel by Meg Cabot ! I don't know if I am happy about that or not. I need to get a copy of the fifth book and then I can continue the series. I don't know why I keep requesting sequels when I still need to read the previous book. Its clogging up my need to read list!

message 1961: by Rachmi (new)

Rachmi | 4882 comments How come my approval on NetGalley is only 15 books while I'm sure I get more than 15? And my declined is 63 books! It doesn't look good at all!

Yeah, mine says I've only been approved of 14 and I know its more...

If you look at approvals under activity, it only shows you books that haven't been archived. You have to add together approved and archived, and it should add up to the number on your profile ☺

I do that too. Got to read the whole study series. I think Margarita had it worst though, she got approved for one last year that was like 11th in a series!

Woah, 11 books would take so long! I just do it all the time. I got Etherworld (Elusion, #2) by Claudia Gabel Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke (Prisoner of Night and Fog, #2) by Anne Blankman Most Likely to Succeed (Superlatives, #3) by Jennifer Echols Polaris (Avalon, #2) by Mindee Arnett and don't have the previous books. I don't have many of the previous book in the series. :(

I can't quite remember, it was an urban fantasy series... it will come to me in a minute. It might have been Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep ?

Oh I remember that one! :)

message 1974: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 47 comments I don't request books in a series unless I have already read or have the previous book(s). Because what if I don't like the first book. Then i'm stuck reading a sequel I don't want to read.

As for the Royal Wedding/Meg Cabot book. This is the first adult book in the series (and they are marketing it as such). So I'm guessing it will be quite different from the rest of the series. I'm reading it without having read the previous books.

I try to read the first book before requesting, but sometimes I just don't get chance. I'm reading Quake (Pulse, #3) by Patrick Carman at the moment which is pretty pants.

ha ha! This conversation just reminded me, I got a review request for this a few weeks ago - Obsession in Death (In Death, #40) by J.D. Robb , 40th in the series. I did not accept it!

We could be twins lol, i do that all the time too and then regret it. even if its a good book its so much pressure to catch up on a series, especially a long one.but i believe in you! speed read for the win :)

I was seriously glad I didn't request Meridian (Arclight, #2) by Josin L. McQuein before reading Arclight (Arclight, #1) by Josin L. McQuein , because I really wouldn't have wanted to read that one!

I bet that each book features a separate case. I bet you could probably read this book without having read the others.

I quite like this series, actually. But I don't have any idea that it's already book 40! I read it up to book 12 2 years ago, I think. And then I got bored. It can be read as a standalone but the main characters, Eve and Roarke's life continues in each book.

message 1983: by rachel, x (new)

rachel, x (typedtruths) | 8401 comments @Jennifer I only don't like requesting sequels because I then have to find the other books in the series. I always try to finish my series though - not matter how long it takes me - so that isn't a bother for me. Even if I didn't like the first book, I'll want to know what happens next and would need to sequel regardless.

@Sarah There is no way I would accept a 40th book! How long would that take to catch up? How could anyone want to read that many books about one couple!?

@Dana Aha! I think I need that luck! There is a bit of pressure to read the rest of the series asap but I have a lot of other books to read too so I hope they won't mind the late review. I did write in my request that I was only up to the 5th book.

Same here.

Do you guys have any suggestions when it's not too early to "request" for something?

I mean I don't really want to request for a book yet until I have finished 10 read now books.

I'd say, if you're requesting from a small publisher, or an indie author, then read a few 'read now' books (4 or 5 maybe?) and then request. If you're requesting from a large publisher like penguin or random house or something like that, then I'd wait a bit longer. They tend to be much harder to get approvals from, and it gets a bit depressing if you get loads of rejections ☹

I think this one might be - https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/sho... this is the UK and ANZ version so that should be australia right?

message 1995: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod
No, signing up for an account is free, and requesting is free too. It's usually best to read and review a couple of 'read now' titles first (titles you don't need to be approved for you can just download them), to show publishers that you're serious about reading and reviewing and will hold up your side of the deal ☺

message 1996: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90956 comments Mod
If you go to the books pages, once you've clicked on 'read now' it should come up with two buttons 'send to kindle' and 'download'. click download to download to your ipad/computer, or you'll need a kindle email to send it to yur kindle ☺
