Ebooks on NetGalley/Edelweiss

Okay thanks Sarah!! I really want to be but there is no way I would do that on purpose now that I know its against the law. Thanks for letting me know!!!
I can tell you that I was not impressed when a woman from one of the publishers told me off for downloading a book that they had approved me for (pre-introduction of the flags). I mean they should have read my profile where it said UK, but no, it was me that was in the wrong!

Well, that isn't fair at all! They shouldn't blame YOU if they didn't tell that to you and it didn't have the flags. I mean that's simply ridiculous! Did you get in much trouble?? :(
Only with the publicist. She made it clear that I'd be in real trouble if it happened again though.

Wow that's so bad. Not good at all. I'll steer away from that then. :)

I think they like to shift the blame.

Yeah I'm sure they do. I just couldn't understand why they did it, though.

I requested a few from Harpercollins, but they never approve me so i can see a few no's coming my way too, haha.

Lol I did that yesterday.

Definitely won't be fighting you for that one Tatiana!

Yeah, I don't know if I am going to sign up for it. I couldn't work it out and wasn't really sure that I wanted to put my address in my profile either.
Margarita - I did a quick 'how to request review copies on edelweiss' here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Does it come up with this screen when you go to review copies?

The blue buttons you can see on the right hand side of the screen shot are the request buttons.
It says 'added yesterday' in a box, and a blue 'request digital RC' underneath

You don't basically. There aren't any details on the publishers, or what they want. Abbie noticed that if you click on 'sales rights' for a book, it tells you where the book will be published by that publisher, which should give you an idea of if they will approve someone in your country or not. Penguin USA have never approved me though, not even once, even on titles which say UK, so if it says Australia its still no guarantee.

Oh that's annoying!! But does it have a ratio-type thing that the publishers use or what? How do they know to approve it or not!? :/
I'm not sure. I do know that I get fewer approvals the more reviews I have outstanding though, so they probably have a ratio the same, you just can't see it. It's only in the last six months that netgalley have had the ratios available to see.

Oh okay. This is so much more complicated than Netgalley!! :)
It's not quite so user friendly because it's geared towards publishers rather than reviewers. The review copy section is only a small part of what edelweiss is there for, where as that's all netgalley does. You tend to find out about books a lot earlier on edelweiss.

I can't find them on the website. Where do you find the review copy giveaways?

I never heard of it before but I'll check it out :)

Hmm I guess that makes sense then. But I am guessing it is going to take me awhile to navigate it!!
As long as you know how to request a review copy, download a review copy, and submit a review, there isn't really much you need to learn.

Exactly. :)

I've been told off by a publisher before for downloading a book that they had approved me for, because it wasn't available to people in the UK. By putting US only now, they're shifting the blame from themselves to the reader if the law is broken. Even if it's a read now, or if they have approved you for it.
It's up to you, but personally, if it's got a US only flag, I wouldn't touch it.
