Alexis (alexabexis) Since this group has such a collective wealth of YA book knowledge, we should have thread for questions about books we have vague memories of but can't quite remember the title for. (Because I can't be the only one this happens to!)

If you have a book you're trying to remember and have not been able to locate through internet searches, provide as much information about it as you can, and hopefully some lovely Wild Things member will also remember it and be able to provide more info.

Alexis (alexabexis) I'll go first, since I have a specific book in mind that made me start this thread.

Title: "witch" is in there somewhere
Pub date: late 80s early 90s
Cover: A girl with long curling red-brown hair in profile view looking worried, facing an old hag (the witch from the title), also in profile view, in front of trees. The art style is typical of books from that time period, realistically painted. I think the border around the picture was light green?

Premise: A (teen?) girl goes to the country for summer vacation or something like that, and there's an old lady who lives up the hill. For whatever reason they end up spending time together, maybe the girl doesn't get along with her family. The big detail I remember is this: the old woman would always run her fingers through the girl's hair, and the girl would feel sharp pains, like hairs were being pulled out. They were, because at the end of the book the witch has a box tied up by strands of the girl's hair. And the girl has to defeat the witch. I think she's also friends with a boy.

Does this jog anyone's memory?

Vicki Ok I could be so completely wrong because its been a really long time since I read the book, but could it be The Witch of Blackbird Pond?

Alexis (alexabexis) I actually have not read that one. When that book came up in school I was in the group that read April Morning. This one was present-day, at the time it was published.

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments It isn't The Witch of Blackbird Pond. The girl in that book isn't on vacation and there's nothing like the hair-pulling scenes you described. Also, the older lady in the story is just accused of being a witch by the people in the town. She isn't really a witch. The story is historical fiction, not fantasy. I used to read The Witch of Blackbird Pond at least once a year when I was young.

I wish I could help more than that, Alexis. If no one here ends up knowing the book, you could also post your question to the "What's The Name of That Book???" group:

Alexis (alexabexis) It is definitely not The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I'm familiar with the story even though I have not read it.

The book I'm looking for came out in either the late 1980s or early 90s and was a contemporary story. It could probably considered a thriller. I think I read it around the time I read Wait Till Helen Comes, which terrified me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I might try that other group, Luann.

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Alexis, I know it!! I can almost swear that the book you are thinking is by Mary Downing Hahn and is called The Time of the Witch. The Time of the Witch by Mary Downing Hahn

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments It don't know how many people check this, but I have been trying to find a book I read when I was younger for a really long time.
I read it back in grade school, most likely before 6th grade. (About 9 years ago) but I don't think it was new then. I read it around the same time I read everything by Willo Davis Roberts I could get my hands on.

It is about a young girl who doesn't have the greatest home life. I feel like there was some level of neglect. I know for a fact that it is NOT Don't Hurt Laurie.
The only thing I really remember about this book is a scene where the mother dresses the girl up in a tattered tutu and takes her panhandling. I remember that it was cute when the little girl was like two, but she is now more like 7 or so. I don't remember the exact age. The mom turns on music, and the little girl dances while people walk by and give them money. There is a scene where a little boy is walking with his mother, and hands them a 10 dollar bill. I think the little girl's mom was smoking.
I wish that I was able to remember more than that, but I that is all I really remember. I have tried other search sites with no luck. If anyone has any ideas at all, I would greatly appreciate them!!

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments Hey Ashley...I don't know what book it is, but if for some reason I come across something with your description...I'll be sure to let you know!!!

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Thanks Jennifer! I appreciate it! I've thought for years it was Don't Hurt Laurie. I found a copy for 50 cents at a used bookstore, so I bought it and read it, and it is definitely not the right book. It's been driving me crazy since then! Bla...

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ashley, you could try AbesBooks.com Book Sleuth area... That's where I found the name of a book that was bugging me for a long long time. They are really helpful. :)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments I'll look into it. Thanks Becky. I have tried several of those type of sites with no luck so far... It's been driving me crazy off and on. I'll forget about if for about a year or so, and then something will remind me of it, and then it bugs me for a while again. One of these days I'm sure I'll figure it out!

I have a tough one, but since we have so many fans of fantasy/dystopic I have faith that someone will know what I'm talking about.

It's a book I haven't read, but would like to. There are at least 2 books about the same events and characters. My library had them shelved separately, though, one as YA, the other as J(unior). They are about a group of kids who were sent away (possibly on a boat) to save them. I think it kind of turns into a "Lord of the Flies" type of thing, though. The author's last name is either at the beginning of the alphabet or the very end. I know this is kinda random and not very helpful, but if anyone has a clue as to what I may be describing, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks.

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments Hola group!

This is not a book I have read, and I am pretty sure it is not YA, but since I know we have some "older" (no offense guys!) Wild Things members I thought I would ask anyway.

Anyone here ever read a book where something that makes you invisible is invented but the people who "go invisible" cannot see becasue the light cannot reflect off their eyes? That is all I know about it. One of my teachers told me to look out for it (knowing I read alot) and so just thought I would ask! I know that is pretty vague. . .sorry.

Thanks!
