Philip Whiteland | 3395 comments You may recall that we authors were chucked off the general Amazoo discussion boards because we were clogging up the debates with our promotions, and we were thus confined to a little sandbox all of our own that nobody ever visited. Just out of interest, I was drawn to look at one of these new, author-free, threads to see what the standard of discussion was. Do take a look at this, I've never seen anything like it ;-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I darent... I have abandoned that forum and any time I try to go back it just seems worse :(

Jim | 21812 comments I follow the Gumbee thread on MOA but haven't looked at any of the others for yonks

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I've even stopped going to the MOA. Depressing place, Amazon.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Haha so OBVIOUSLY it was the authors being the idiots. I knew there was a reason I don't go on the forums there.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments What a bunch of freaks.

Reminds me of the official World of Warcraft forum.

message 7: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Didn't go there much either...although it was fun poking the trolls. BUYMYGOLD ONLY 5DOLLAR... ah those were the days.

We had our own guild forum and as I was guildmistress I got to boot out idiots:) Most enjoyable it was too:)

message 8: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments It's always surprising to hear about girls who played WoW.

We had our voice chat server and I was very surprised to learn that one of the girls in our guild was Dutch - her English was immaculate.

I was raid leader and I hated it after a while.

Had lots of fun whilst it lasted though.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Now I remember why I gave up on the Amazon forum!
Truly terrible.

Philip Whiteland | 3395 comments Good innit ;-)

message 11: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Oh yes, we had a lot of fun. I sort of inherited the guild from some friends when they left. Our guild was small but we raided with some other small guilds and did OK. We had a pretty decent Danish, and Finnish contingency, I think we had Dutch too. There were probably far more Scandinavians than Brits in the end:)

Raiding had its moments, usually when some twat went AFK in the door of Onyxia's lair or something.

We had a voice chat, most of it was us being drunk (or pretending to be drunk) and talking nonesense. There were only a couple of women in the guilds and co-guilds so the girls had to be...broadminded.

I played Warhammer online as well, and Star Trek and Starwars Online but I much prefer the fantasy. I think I pretty much played WOW every night or every other night for about 3 years.

I couldn't do it now... I struggle to play single player PC games these days with all my back problems.

Ah well...

Yes I am a geek and proud:) I think we might have derailed the OP though.

I don't think that's a problem, Phil showed us the trolls frolicking on the beach, we looked with fascinated horror, sighed and moved on. Phil has played his part, reminding us how bad things can get, and also in provoking a fascinating discussion.
I confess I've totally missed out on the who 'on-line' game world, mainly because we were late getting broadband round here, but also because I'm half a generation to old for taking computer games seriously anyway. I've never owned a joy stick or game controller, indeed I've never used one

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments alright fes up. which one of our Daves is the stirrer? ;-)
I used to pop in the zoo to see if there was any info to share with the group but i don't even bother with that anymore.
poor sad people who spend their time there.
i do hope they know they're welcome here amongst friends

message 16: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments I suspect some of them couldn't cope with moderation to be honest.

message 17: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It's not, and never had been, about debate. It's about shouting people down and being rude, with no-one to tell you off, and without having to look into the eyes and soul of another human being as you do it.

Then you've never lived! :)

Seriously, I like them, but they're not all their cracked out to be.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't even clicked on the link. I've haven't been to amazoo for ages, whenever I dip a toe in it just leaves me depressed. I mostly stick here now, with an occasional foray over to KUF.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, after writing the above I gave in to curiosity and clicked the link. Never again!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments There is a Lynne mentioned on there but its another one. Honestly, I haven't posted on there since I was accused of harbouring a famous comedian's alleged paedophile son. Yes really! That was because I said I personally thought that shouting at a dead person's cortege (whoever they are) was a disgusting thing to do. I know it was political and very nasty as it was Margaret Thatcher but to get that type of abuse made me realise I didn't want to contribute to the lunatic's playground. I was then well stalked, I complained to AZ got a phone call - email etc saying they would remove it and the post is still there. Nuff said. I occasionally look but nothing would make me join in ever again. I didn't flounce off - I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of thinking they've driven me away I just lost interest. On one thread there was another poster calling an American ex president a paedophile. I would have thought that was libel, but obviously not. They've done me a favour really, I don't look except for books and I have also bought less from Amazon I don't impulse buy any more. I don't rate or review anything as I don't want them ridiculing my purchases and reviews either. My love affair with Amazon is over.

I don't think you can libel the dead, but the way you were treated leaves me shaking my head.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments The ex president isn't dead, I would have thought with AZ being US based etc somebody might have taken notice of my 'report abuse' as I say I got a mail saying it was to be removed but its still there

Jim | 21812 comments R.M.F wrote: "Jim wrote: "Then you've never lived! :)

I played Rome Total War (The total realism mod) and never bothered re-loading it when I upgraded my computer. Basically I was spending too much time on it, and what made it even more addictive was that the mod had been written by people who'd read my stuff (perhaps second or third hand) which meant that I was playing a game which confirmed my prejudices

But I fritter away too much time on forums anyway, I don't need another black hole to pour my life into :-)

They're the same category of individuals who trolled usenet in the 1990s, and wherever you allow people anonymity and the ability to slag others off, they'll do it. I think Ignite summed it up as well as any

message 29: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited Jul 09, 2013 03:29AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Quite right RMF our Ignite has it spot on. The man libelled isn't dead though. They can do it but it doesn't make it right or compulsory. I'm doing what I would do in the street, crossing over and avoiding them. There's no point challenging it although that goes against the grain. I've seen others try and it gets very ugly and aggressive.

message 30: by A.L. (last edited Jul 09, 2013 04:23AM) (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Wow that is evil. OK so I wasn't a fan of Mrs T, and I wasn't exxcatly crying at her dead but let her rest in peace now. What is done is done and it is very disrepectful to shout abuse ata courtege. She was still someone's mum and grandma and loved in her own way.

It's funny though how they have to voice THEIR opinion and their rights but seem to totally disregard others. I am all for debate but when it degenerates into that kind of bevaiour it is totally wrong.

I guess one of the downsides of the internet is the level of anonymity as Jim said.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments As you can tell it still annoys me months later. I could kick myself for allowing it to happen, although it was such a far-fetched ridiculous thing to be upset by. I think its the fact that the computer/tablet/phone etc is a personal item its almost as though your privacy has been intruded into. Lesson learned anyway.

Neither was I, I meant anyone dead not necessarily that person, but of course they take it out of context and the chap who said it tells blatant lies just to get a reaction. Thats why I'm mad at myself for biting the bloody bait.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments going back to what Jim said about moderation.
Simon and I really don't do much moderating at all. its more housekeeping, moving threads about n such, trying to keep the group in some semblance of order so we can all find stuff.
i don't know how successful we are at it. ;-)
all i know is that within seconds of reading pretty much any thread in here Im at least smiling and usually laughing like a maniac.

message 36: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I only remember a couple of episodes at the beginning of the group where nastiness could have set in but we all very politely declined. It was very clear from the beginning that we didn't want that kind of behaviour and no one rises to it if it presents itself therefore goes no where and we continue to be happy.

I get the impression that reading the ingredients on a cereal box could have you laughing like a maniac! :)

message 39: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments That's cause cereal boxes try to convince you that their sugar loaded product is 100% healthy for you.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments erm
A friend and i were in gales of snorting laughter because of a cheese sandwich not long ago so you're not far wrong.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Have you been snorting cheese sandwiches again, Patti. You are on notice, you know.

Oh, perhaps you were snorting laughter. That's okay then.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments only snort cheese sandwiches out my nose Geoff. its rather painful.
yogurt hurts less. unless there is like musli or fruit in it.
strawberries are okay if they're nice n ripe.

message 43: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments With moderation, it's as much the presence of moderators as the actions that helps.
People know you're watching over the group, the efforts you take with moving threads about, setting fire to the curtains, all the little things that show how much you love us.
So the trolls go off and frolic someplace else

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments oh Im just a scary cow, i am.
a hungry scary cow.
anyone got a spare cheese sandwich?

message 45: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I do go over to Amazon occasionally but I, too tend to reserve my attention to the gumbee thread or there are the odd threads in the MOA about writing that can be interesting.

I've always avoided the Kindle forum on Amazon because that particular group of individuals seem to have a never ending row and they just take it to whichever post is at the top of the list at any given time.

It's strange because I have had some perfectly pleasant exchanges with a number of those guys, individually, on other Amazon forums but things invariably seem to go tits up on that one.

I suspect Will is right about the withering and dying aspect. Amazon does seem to have attracted more than its fair share of self important forum nimby's.

Basically, the Amazon forum as it was when I started posting there, became this one. Everyone decamped and here we are. ;-)

Cheers

MTM

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments yeah and how scary is it that Simon was our pie-eyed piper???
i remember reading his posts in the zoo a couple years ago and thinking 'what a tool'

oh. hi Simon.

:O

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Ooh. What is this goodreads button labelled 'delete moderator'?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Be careful. Patti has one that says 'Steal all the beer'

message 49: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3395 comments Gosh, this started more of a debate than I expected. Re AZ, in the immortal words of Benny Hill, "If I had not seen it with mine own eyes, I would not have believed it"

Saw a thread a while back in which the bloke who started it asked a simple question about transferring files from PC to Kindle. As I hadn't figured out how to do this then, I had a look. The first few answers were warily sarcastic, then it just descended into vitriolic abuse. I wonder what new Kindle owners make of it all?
