as the topics says.
why did travis call abby pigeon?
i dont think they explained this in the book or i might have missed it.

He explained it, but I was still a little confused.
He said it was because she was a dove, (beautiful girl).
I'm still confused, because the last time I checked a pigeon and a dove weren't the same thing, but I love the name anyway. Hope this helped! :)

Personally, I wouldn't want to be called Pigeon or Pidge and I think he completely overdoes the Pidge thing in his POV book... to the point of driving me crazy.

^^^Yeah that's what he explained in the book, I didn't really understand it either.

Jamie said that Pigeon was the name Tramp gave to Lady in the Lady and the Tramp. Travis was the "tramp" of the school and Abby is the lady. Maybe they explain it better in the cartoon movie lol.

Lady and the Tramp was made in the 50's. I'm not from that era, but from my elders, I have learned that the vernacular was a bit different back then. Pidge was just a term of endearment. Some people used to feel an affinity for pigeons and would go out of their way to take care of them. (I'm from NY and you can still see old school NYers feeding pigeons all of the time.) In the movie, Tramp was a stray dog and a mutt and lady was a purebred and had an owner. By definition, that meant that she was way out of his league. He also was carefree and had a reputation with the ladies. Yet, he still had an affinity for Lady and wanted to be able to take care of her. I think the story sort of mirrors Travis and Abby in some ways. He's the tramp and she is the lady and he nicknames her pidge.

He explains it in his POA book.

Pigeon is like a beautiful unattainable girl. Jamie said that she got the idea from Lady and the Tramp. I think it's cute (;

reading this book now I hear it so good.

I was going to say what Mochaspresso said about "Lady and the Tramp." And doves & pigeons are part of the same family (Columbidae) when classifying animals.

I understood it to mean that it is a winning hand in poker, a beautiful bird.

Pigeon was a common slang word simply meaning woman or female in the 1950's. It is a term of affection, not meant to be derogatory. It was famously used in lady and the tramp, which was made in the 50's. In the UK the slang word for a woman is bird. In a sentence it would be used like, "Oh look at that bird." Or, "I was talking to a bird the other day." It probably is a remnant of the same thing, although bird can be seen as a bit more rough, perhaps not as affectionate.

It's explained in the first chapter of the sequel (Travis' point of view) "Walking Disaster."

"Walking Disaster" explains it well. One of my favourite lines in that book.
