message 1: by Paul (new)

Paul I always love these threads. They give me so many ideas for new things to read.

I just finished Shift by Hugh Howey which i thought was fantastic. Really looking forward to reading Dust when it comes out. Nearly done with Ready Player One. Anyone else here read it?

What are others reading apart from the official group books?

message 2: by Kala (new)

Kala | 3 comments Ready Player One was definitely a good book. If you liked that one, Redshirts by John Scalzi might be right up your alley. I've just finished Stardust by Neil Gaiman (love his work) and am about to start Inferno by Dan Brown as I wait for library books to come in.

message 3: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) I'm reading Furies of Calderon and rereading A Storm of Swords.

message 4: by Denice (last edited Jul 07, 2013 09:43AM) (new)

Denice (dmt60) | 6 comments I am reading The Seeds of a Daisy with my other group. Also listening to On A Pale Horse

message 5: by Drake (new)

Drake (drake2484) Once I finish the Riyria Revelations, I will be reading the Mistborn trilogy.

message 6: by Reinoud (new)

Reinoud (fitzzz) | 4 comments I'm reading Blood Song and it's pretty awesome so far. I also just finished the first two books of the lightbringer series. Pretty refreshing. Nice magic systems that makes you think of Mistborn.

message 7: by Vladimir (new)

Vladimir | 1 comments I just finished Final Empire by Sanderson. It was outstanding book. I am going to continue in Mistborn series.

message 8: by Denice (new)

Denice (dmt60) | 6 comments Looking for a new read and Bloodsong sounds interesting. Thanks

message 9: by Greg (new)

Greg | 6 comments I'm reading Academ's Fury (book #2 of The Codex Alera series). Very fast paced and entertaining series so far :)

I have seen so many amazing reviews for Blood Song that I put it on my "To Read" list, but I'm disappointed that book 2 won't even be out till at least summer 2014, not to mention any following books. "No where near complete" series are on my black list compliments of GRRM... So I patiently wait for him to write faster so I can begin reading ;)

message 10: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) Done reading Academ's Fury, which was a lot more entertaining than Furies of Calderon, and now I'm re-reading Mistborn.

message 11: by Angie (new)

Angie | 13 comments I've just finished reading Bones the omnibus by Mark Wheaton. It's really great, all about a police dog and ends up with zombies and the apocalypse. I'm now starting Spring heeled Jack by Mark hodder. I agree that Academs Furie is more fun than the first. The series gets even better though.

message 12: by Reinoud (new)

Reinoud (fitzzz) | 4 comments Blood song was amazing! Im thinking on starting with the belgariad series. Is it worth the read?

message 13: by Nermin (new)

Nermin (narminstaley) | 7 comments I'm currently reading Unfettered anthology, the way of the kings and the cuckoo's calling.

Unfetteres is a collection of short stories by some of the best fantasy writers alive today. I've only read Patrick Rothfuss and Mark Lawrenre's short stories so far, both are Ok. I was expecting something different from PR, so I'm a bit disappointed, to tell the truth. Mark Lawrence's is another the Broken Empire story, and as a fan of the series, I really enjoyed it. I also started The Way of the Kings a while back. I'm a huge Sanderson fan and I've heard so many good things about this book, so I hope the book will live up to my expectation.

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) Hey everyone! I'm currently reading The Golem and the Jinni and I'm listening to Deadlocked. I can't decide what I want my next Kindle book to be. I've been on Goodreads all night and it's just giving me more books that I want to read right away!

Paul, I read Ready Player One last year (or the year before?) and looooved it! It's so much fun and the adventures are a blast. I think it will definitely be a future reread.

message 15: by Drake (new)

Drake (drake2484) Nermin, the Way of Kings was amazing. It was my first Sanderson book and it's just awesome. It can be slow at times, moving through all of the different character's stories. But stick with it because the ending is rewarding. I'm excited for the second book and to see where this series goes. I am actually in the process of reading my second Sanderson book, Mistborn. It's pretty cool so far but I'm not that far into it.

Jenny, you said you found a lot of books already that you want to read right away, what ones caught your eye? I have the same problem. I try not to look through the books on good reads too often because I find so many I want to read and then I get depressed I can't read faster. There's too many good books out there and not enough time to read them.

message 16: by Paul (new)

Paul Picked up Dust by Hugh Howey this morning and am loving it so far. I really can't recommend these books enough.

message 17: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1 comments Had the TV to myself at the weekend, which meant I watched some of the bonus features on my Game of Thrones series 1 DVD - watched the episodes, but not all the features yet. That in turn inspired me to get on with the rest of the series books! Just started Feast of Crows, which will be coming with me on the train today.

Also finishing up Sweet Justice - a compilation of stories from 2000 AD annuals about various Judge Dredd related things! Includes a great little story by Neil Gaiman from 1988 too!

message 18: by Reinoud (new)

Reinoud (fitzzz) | 4 comments Im finishing The Dark Elf Trilogy Collector's Edition today. Not really my favorite but i guess i get why people view it as a classic. Speaking of which, im going to start in The Shadow of the Torturer . Anyone familiar with this series? Lot of mixed opinions.

message 19: by Angie (new)

Angie | 13 comments I'm just starting emperor of thorns, I enjoyed the first 2 so I'm looking forward to this one.

message 20: by Daniela (new)

Daniela (danielapereira) | 23 comments I'm also now reading Emperor of Thorns. I still got in my to-read list for this month: The Alloy of Law, Fool Moon, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and The Cuckoo's Calling. So much to read, so little time...

@Reinoud: It is the first time I hear about this series, but The Shadow of the Torturer seems interesting.

message 21: by Angie (new)

Angie | 13 comments The shadow of the torturer, I've not heard of that one so I'll look it up. It definitely sounds like something I would read. But also like you I have lots waiting to read, far more since getting my Kindle

message 22: by Karen (last edited Aug 21, 2013 07:00AM) (new)

Karen (karinlib) I just recently finished Blood Song, by Anthony Ryan.
I also just finishedHollow World and The Crown Tower, both by Michael Sullivan. One other book I'd like to mention is Ruby Red, by Kerstin Gier a YA time travel book.

message 23: by Amy (new)

Amy (amanahan) | 16 comments The Silo series by Hugh Howey is a great series. Wool, Shift, and the third book Dust just came out. (although I haven't read dust yet. Have a couple other books to finish first)

message 24: by Amy (new)

Amy (amanahan) | 16 comments Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood is another good series. Book two in the series is called The Year of the Flood and I think the third book comes out this fall.

message 25: by Lee (new)

Lee I read Prince of Thorns and King of Thorns and am now reading Emperor of Thorns. I'm really enjoying this series.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Im 60 pages into The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon. Its pretty interesting so far.

I've heard that the second book is very different from the first, but in a good way, so I'm pretty excited to read that one already. XD

message 30: by Zak (new)

Zak Davies | 6 comments Well I've just finished Steelheart. Now I'm going to start The Gunslinger :)

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyya all, new member here :)

I'm currently reading The High Druid's Blade, Intensity and The Fell Sword.

message 32: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 8 comments Just finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane and am almost finished Assassin's Apprentice. Gaiman's book read like a fairy tale, and is short so you can pad the reading stats for 2014. Hobb's first in the series is quite good & am looking forward to bk 2.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I finished off The High Druid's Blade (The Defenders of Shannara #1) by Terry Brooks [My review here] and Intensity by Dean Koontz [My review here]

It's on to Talus and the Frozen King by Graham Edwards for me now!

message 34: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) I re-read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson this past week. Now I am reading Words of Radiance, I am enjoying this one as much as WoK.

message 35: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 8 comments Just finished the Farseer Series by Robin Hobb. Read each book faster than the previous book, lost track of time and stayed up later than normal because the story flowed beautifully. A great read.

message 36: by D (new)

D (darrentpatrick) The Darth Bane trilogy in the Star Wars EU (just about finished with the first book, Path of Destruction). A good read, to be sure.

message 37: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Jones Just finished the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher and its definitely up there with my favorites. Just started reading The First Law trilogy. Which I think, already, will be high up there also and I'm only maybe halfway through the first book. Characters all feel real and gritty to me which I like. Think I might move onto Sanderson's Warbreaker next or Sullivan's Theft of Swords not sure yet.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished off Robot Uprisings by Daniel H. Wilson , a pretty great anthology that's coming out soon. 17 stories and I think there were only 2 that I didn't enjoy, overall. Here's my overall review if anyone's interested.

message 39: by Hanna (new)

Hanna W. (hannawarsame) | 3 comments I finished reading Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence about two days ago and am now reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson for the first time. :)
