I remember reading a book about a boy who goes perhaps to live with a relative for the summer and becomes attached to a dolphin while there. It had a young protagonist but I am almost positive it was pubbed for adults. Likely to have been published in 1992-1994. I thought it was something like DOLPHIN SUMMER but the only search for that comes up with an older book. This book had an orangey/yellow sunset on the jacket with a dolphin jumping in the middle. Thanks!!!

OMG, so once I typed it out and thought about the sunset, it came to me via Google. DOLPHIN SUNRISE by Elizabeth Webster.
