Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (Group Read July 2013)
It's so weird but I feel like we chatted this book already in group. It might have been just because several of us had taken over the currently reading topic for a while, but I kept thinking we had a topic for it already!
LOL, I feel like I've talked about this everywhere! But yeah, I think it was in here that I read it and we all discussed it.
It would make an awesome movie, for sure. Especially the designs of the cities. I can totally see that in a movie.
Wow, yeah for sure! Though I think I pictured them more straight up. Like a high rise.Wow, I wonder where that is.
The Stacks! I love this book, especially growing up in the 80's it hit home!:) I would love for this book to become a movie.

Oh I did too! That was the closest I could find (but isn't that pic awesome?). There is some concept art for the movie version of The Stacks floating around out there. Someone posted it at one point. I'll have to look for it.
I liked the book so much I went out and bought it for my brother who was much more of a gamer in the 80's than I was. The one I got him shows the stacks on the cover but if they do a movie, who knows if it will look like this
That's what my cover looks like too! I bought it after reading it on my Kindle, (I agree, it was THAT good). I love the image of the stacks on it.
I started listening to the audio book, but I feel like I won't have a lot of quiet and peaceful moments to continue listening :(But I'm so excited, because everyone seems to like it a lot!!
This book was ah-MAZ-ing! After reading it, I went out and bought a copy because I knew I would want to re-read it again.
So I've only read the prologue so far, but I do think this is going to be awesome. I have a fondness for the 80s even though I wasn't alive. :D
I'm loving this book so far! I have already recommended it to a friend. As I'm getting closer to the end, (view spoiler) it feels like social commentary keeps being ratcheted up. I can't tell if the authors purpose was pure entertainment and social commentary just can't be avoided or if the intent is to show us the road we are heading down.
I can't wait to get off work and finish the book tonight.
I started this last night - did anyone see/think of the parallels in the beginning between it and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - the inheritance scheme, the situation of the main character
I hadn't thought of that, but I wouldn't be surprised if the author drew inspiration from it. The entire book is an homage to an era.
I definitely noticed the Willy Wonka feeling. It's actually mentioned later in the book too!I'm getting close to the end and I'm so nervous! I'm at the point where they (view spoiler). I'm expecting a happy ending, but I just don't know!

It was also another ratchet in the social commentary but this one was clearly social commentary.
I wasn't surprised either. I figured something was up when (view spoiler). He had to be hiding something pretty major.
Just had to rant for a minute, lol. Finally got my reserved copy from the library and its an ARC. Ugh. It will probably be fine, but darn it - i wanted a real published copy. And to top it all off, there's pencil notes all through out it. AARRGGHH.
Ok, just had to get that out of my system!
I'm at 17% not spoiler tagging because I'm just going to fangirl over a G-Force mention. I am not familiar with all the pop culture drops thus far but holy heck I LOVED that anime. People dressed as birds from outer space? Of course!I have to stop myself highlighting the last sentence of every chapter. It's ridiculous.
I read WB picked this up, Wade sounds like Steven Spielberg's type of hero.
i'm almost done with this - at the 75% mark right now - i'm interested to see how it is all going to tie up...I have to get it done because I have the ebook from the library and the loan expires on Sunday
40% I'm reading so slow, might me the info dump which is giving my imagination cramps (is that possible?) but still liking it thus far. (view spoiler)
I'm at 14% now and still waiting for something awesome to happen >.<Since I'm listening to the audio book, I can't bring myself to listen to it longer than 30 minutes .. :(
I finished it up today - have to admit I was hoping for a bit more at the end - it tied up too pretty IMHO - but glad I finally read it

On one-handed I was like ZOMG, best book ever for the parts that take place in 2044 (and I can't wait to see a movie version).
But on the other hand, during one of the 5 page info dumps early on I almost just returned the book to the library. I kept getting frustrated at the over explanation of the references and jokes. Some of them felt like entire wikipedia entries on the page :(
Well I'm at page 101 and I'm so enjoying it. I graduated high School in 1986, so most of this stuff is right up my alley. I played video games, but wasn't a true "gamer", but its still really cool.I love the competition aspect of all of this as well.
Amazingly different than all of the books I've been reading lately.

I am enjoying it but I was a kid during the 80s (I'm 32) so a lot of the references do go over my head. Some of the mentions are vaguely familiar and this is where the info overshare does its job but at the same time exhausts my imagination.
61%. I am kinda wishing (view spoiler)
ETA: this would translate awesomely into film no doubt.
I actually think this one needs to be a mini series! A movie would be way too short! A lot of the chapters have little cliffhangers, so I think they'd work well as ending points for episodes. I doubt that would happen though.

Haha...that's such a nicer way of looking at it :) And actually, I have some pretty geeky friends who get the same eye roll and "hurry it up" hand motion from me when they go off on a long-winded speech about which was the best Green Lantern.
I'm 33 and it's amazing how my frame of reference is really very late 80s and much more 90s. For instance, I kept picturing Family Matters every time Family Ties was mentioned.

I'm more of an anime fan but I think the comic book fanboys are cut from the same (lovable) crazy cloth as otakus. Family Ties is the one with Michael J Fox right? I used to get to watch reruns of 80s sitcoms back in the day, I think Perfect Strangers taught me basic English if you can believe it... just sucks Ernest Cline doesn't seem to like Cousin Balki as much as I did :)

We also have a fantasy casting topic in the group reads folder for those who have an active imagination and would like to show pictures of who they envision in the character roles.
