I'm only 39% in so I'm trying not to read all your spoilers but I'm curious why you both rated it 4stars if it sort of is really confusing and becomes a whole different book.

And had I not read (view spoiler)[Noah is a ghost (hide spoiler)] I would NOT have caught those clues in the beginning. But when I read them and they sounded super weird, I remembered this thread.

Okay one more thing, I was reading comments on past buddy read up to like 20%, and one person said that the author suffers from the same symptom as Cassandra Clare - she can't write a straight person. The Raven boys are all a scene away from a makeout session, or something like that. I laughed the first time I read it and now about 37% in I can totally see what she means! (view spoiler)[it's the scene where Rowan "confronts" Gansey about telling Adam if he leaves, he'll take Adam with him, and Gansey responds with something like I'll take you all with me... it was just weird and not something I feel like straight guys would discuss... but idk (hide spoiler)]

also I'm trying not to read your other spoilers regarding any farther in the book than I am.

And if this wasn't a buddy read and I wasn't trying to get points I would I'm not a huge fan of creepy and paranormal. There's enough other stuff going on to make it interesting but yeah.

Also, when Blue says she's going to help them instead of staying away from Gansey, doesn't she realize she has a better chance of preventing his death BY staying away?

Ok so I just finished the section where they go into the trees and they walk through the seasons and they find Rowan's writing on a rock. I was reading it and I was sort of rolling my eyes like why is the author using trees speaking Latin?

I also feel like before this, the book is going really slowly. When I got to 50% it felt like some books' 33% and I was think a lot of the first half could have been shortened or cut out and still had the eerie feel to it that Stiefvater wants it to have.

ok so I'm 79% in and here's some thoughts

(view spoiler)[ at 64%, it was like close to midnight so I didn't update here, my suspicion was that Noah's last name was going to be Czerny. Also with the saying about how Gansey could live on the ley line because someone else died - I figured out that was Noah. (so proud of myself!) Otherwise it didn't tie in Whelk at all. There was enough about Noah for me to make me not forget him. And I actually think it doesn't become a different book, it sort of explodes wide open, taking the hints of characters it had placed there and saying hey there's a reason! But I have absolutely no idea how the kiss ties in yet, so maybe there's where it feels different to you?

But the Whelk character is actually was has me down rating the book (when I'm done). I don't think he was developed enough because there's not enough to suggest that he's a villain. He's creepy and you recognized that he lost everything and you're not quite sure how he came to be professor at Aglionby, but I didn't recognize villain characteristics until he pulled the gun on Gansey. I mean it helps the book become more fully formed with a real threat, but I feel like him being a villain wasn't clear in the beginning and I can't tell if that was purposeful or not.
