August's group read is spotlighting author Clive Cussler. We will be nominating books from his list of works as our August group read.

Each member is welcome to nominate one book. Please post a link to the book title or cover by clicking on 'add book/author'. The book must be in print (available new or in electronic format).

The poll will go up on July 7th.

Rizwan Khalil YAY! Finally a Cussler group read! :D

I'll nominate one of the only two classic cold war era Dirk Pitt novels that I haven't yet read, and very much want to read it now:

Deep Six

A ghost ship drifts across the northern Pacific....

A Soviet luxury liner burns like a funeral pyre....

And the U.S. President's yacht is heading for disaster....

Somewhere off the coast of Alaska, a sunken cargo poses a threat of unthinkable proportions. Potentially, the lost shipment of chemicals could destroy all life in the ocean -- and perhaps the world -- unless DIRK PITT can find it first. But time is running out for the NUMA agent and his team. Pitt's main target is just one deadly component of a vast international conspiracy fueled by hijacking, bribery, and murder. And at the center of it all is a powerful Korean shipping empire with a chilling political agenda -- to kidnap the President of the United States....

I guess I really almost don't care which book would won eventually (but hopefully from the classic novels, not current ones), its ALWAYS a pleasure read/re-reading a kickass Dirk Pitt adventure!

P.S. Just to add, to anyone who hadn't yet read any Cussler books, most of Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels are independent stories without much relations to the previous ones (other than the continuing characters), so feel free!

Eileen Since I haven't read any of Clive Cussler's books, I'm going to suggest, The Chase. I figured, it's as good a place as any to start.

message 4: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 74 comments I'll go with the one that started it all for me: Raise The Titanic! Raise The Titanic! (Dirk Pitt, #4) by Clive Cussler . I've been a fan of his ever since.

message 5: by Henry (new)

Henry (henoir99) | 20 comments I have read most of CC's books but my favourites by far are the Oregon series and suggest anyone new to CC start at the beginning with Golden Buddha Golden Buddha (The Oregon Files, #1) by Clive Cussler

Thats the other classic Dirk Pitt novel I haven't read, hoping someone else would nominate it!

Any of the classic Dirk Pitt would be good to start with, for those who have not read him before.

"Raise the Titanic"

message 13: by Becky (new)

Becky | 1 comments I do not have a favorite book, but the most memorable was "Raise the Titanic".

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim | 1 comments I read Raise the Titanic years ago & I've looked forward to every new book Clive has written!

message 15: by Neil (new)

Neil Plucknett | 3 comments As much as I like the Dirk Pitt novels - I find now I prefer the Oregon Files series. s a nomination then I'd opt for "Dark Watch" or perhaps "Plague Ship"!!

message 16: by Kari (new)

Kari Spartan Gold - The first in the Fargo Adventure Series.

Truly great book and the beginning of a fantastic series. Lots of adventure and locations, Cussler puts a lot of time into really placing the reader in the various locations. I really love the characters, too. Funny and sarcastic, with super witty dialogue. The series has become an absolute favorite of mine!

message 18: by Nick (new)

Nick Morgan | 1 comments I have read all of Clive's book except his Isaac bell series and I have got to go with raise the titanic or Sahara, both amazing journeys!!!

message 21: by Steve (last edited Jul 06, 2013 04:42PM) (new)

Steve (tripptee) | 4 comments I like your nomination David...but I am extremely partial to Inca Gold. Loren Smith; Shannon Kelsey; the 36 Pierce Arrow Duet; a Paddle Wheel steamer; and the ending song...!(along with the gut and tear wrencher of returning the sacred Montolo artifacts). Inca Gold (Dirk Pitt, #12) by Clive Cussler

message 22: by Juls (new)

Juls Duncan (julsduncan) | 2 comments I have read everyone of Clive's books, more than once I should add. My favorite of them all… is THE SILENT SEA (Oregon Files), because the ending had such a twist that the book became my all time favorite… Thank you Mr. Cussler for keeping us so entertained. The Silent Sea

message 23: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Wanliss | 2 comments Having had a lifelong affair with Dirk Pitt, I find this a very difficult decision. The first ever CC book both my husband and I read were Sahara, about 15 years before we met. There are so many favourites...but I will have to go with Pacific Vortex.

message 24: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Coffey (tlcoffey) | 1 comments While I love Dirk, I've become a little partial to the adventures of Juan Cabrillo and crew. Maybe Golden Buddha or Plague Ship?

message 25: by Walter (new)

Walter Winterburn | 1 comments The Chase (Isaac Bell, #1) by Clive Cussler
Start out with, Raise the Titanic, loved all his books, have a large collection plus illustrations done by Roland Dahlquist, but by far, love the new Isaac Bell Series
, my favorite being The Chase
See my Blog, Walters Clive Cussler Collection

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 1 comments How can you pick a favorite CC book/series? I think I own every book in every series & regularly recommend to new readers. Always great stories & characters you can't help to love. Any CC book takes me on an action & adventure rush - all with a little romance on the side - perfect for a lazy day / night & a glass of wine.

message 27: by Susan (new)

Susan (northernlamb) I have The Chase and a lot of other CC books and I am sure I could get whatever book is chosen either from the library or amazon.

message 28: by Shanyn (new)

Shanyn (shanyn_s) | 1 comments I own all Clive Cussler's books, and have read them all except The Striker and Zero Hour. I would nominate an Isaac Bell book solely for the opportunity to discuss that portion of Western History. But I'm good with ANY book!

message 29: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie Coll | 1 comments Any of the Dirk Pitt series would do me have loved and read CC since my dad lent me his copy of Mayday 23 years ago been hooked ever since and reread every book at least once a year they are timeless.

message 30: by Nigel (new)

Nigel (nigelg) | 1 comments I've read everything Clive has written, but it has to be the one that started it all for me...."Raise The Titanic"

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I love all Clives's books, but it has to be Vortex as Dirk is probably one of the best characters in all his books, but then again I do like the Oregon series. I also love the way Clive has a cameo in the books

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Clive CusslerPacific Vortex

message 33: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (jshea483) I vote Sahara. Sahara

message 34: by Rick (last edited Jul 07, 2013 12:19PM) (new)

Rick (rickshaw) | 1 comments Have to vote for Raise the Titanic. I'll give me an opportunity to dust off a first edition hard back that Clive was kind enough to autograph for me at the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference a couple of years ago.

Okay, once again I will remind you that I need nominations to be added via a goodreads link to the title or bookcover (click add book/author). If your nomination isn't on the poll, it's probably because I could not tell what books were nominated for some of the posts and I did not add books that were not nominated according to the guidelines.

message 42: by Christine (new)

Christine Dupuis parks | 1 comments Raise the Titanic was my least favorite, never mind the movie,OMG. Sorry people. But I am such a Dirk Pitt fan. I think of Hugh Jackman when I read Dirk books!!I imagine Dirk looks just like him! But I love Kurt Austin also. I was hooked on Clive after reading Polar Shift. It's the best book I've ever read! What a movie that one would make. My favorite Dirk series would be the first one...Pacific Vortex..gotta love how Dirk and Summer started the romance!

message 43: by Susan (new)

Susan (northernlamb) Wow! I see Hugh Jackman playing Dirk also! lol Polar Shift was the first Clive Cussler book I read. That did it for me. Clive could also do a cameo in the movie like Hitchcock.
