Hello, VW, and welcome to both Goodreads and the group. I see you've already found the discussion areas, so I hope you'll join us for some more interesting discussions this year!

Gael MacGregor | 2 comments Hi, I'm Gael MacGregor, and I've always loved the genres of science fiction and fantasy. I also love historical fiction, even though my writing, including "Don't Look Now..." doesn't fall into any of those categories. One doesn't always write in the same genres that tickle our reader fancies. :)

Since my first reading of E.E. Doc Smith's "The Lensman" I was hooked. Harry Harrison's "Bill the Galactic Hero" showed me that humor and sci-fi could be fast friends.

One of my favorite books is Anne McCaffrey's "The Ship Who Sang". I also loved Gordon R. Dickinson's "The Dragon and the George" series, and Roger Zelazny's the "Nine Princes in Amber" books. Katherine Kurz & Deborah Turner Harris' "The Adept" series is another fave.

Other favorite authors include Marion Zimmer Bradley, Harlan Ellison, Ursula K. Le Guin, Poul Anderson, Robert Bloch, Robert Silverberg, Philip Jose Farmer, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.

I look forward to hearing about the books that y'all enjoy!

Hi, Gael. Welcome to the group. I think you'll find there are fans here of all the authors you mentioned, me included. It brought a smile that you mentioned Dickinson's The Dragon and the George, since it's one of those little-known gems I seem to have discovered, along with its all-powerful Auditing Department, through a friend years ago. (I should nominated for a group bookclub discussion. After Doomsday Book I could use a laugh.)

Anyway, welcome to the group and I hope you'll join us for some interesting discussions of sci-fi and fantasy.

Dave (dcr_writes) | 45 comments Hi Miles, Gael, & V.W.

I remember reading The Dragon and the George in a book club edition as a teen, though the first Dickson book that really grabbed me was Tactics of Mistake in the DAW edition.

As for Doc Smith, he seems to be a favorite here.

Tactics of Mistake was one of the books that turned me on to Military SF. Great book.

Hi, CJ, and welcome to the group. I hope you'll join us for some interesting discussions in the year ahead.

As for the latest Hobbit movie, I haven't seen it myself, yet; I'm waiting for Smaug to come around on Netflix. We do have a small discussion topic on SF/F Movies of 2013. It hasn't provoked a lot of comments, I assume because most of us are too busy reading to go to the movies :) Why don't you drop your opinion in there and see if it inspires other cinemaphile members to join the conversation?

Karen | 74 comments Hello all! I saw this group and thought "THIS! This is for me". I live in the Caribbean and I have been a SF&F fan most of my life. Early favorites were The Hobbit and LOTR, and David Eddings' Belgariad series - all of which I discovered when in my early teens. Sometimes I go for the easy fun reads but then every so often I read something wonderfully complex that sends me in search of more challenging works. Over the years those have included Revelation Space, Snow Crash, A Game of ThronesMistborn: The Final Empire. I am really looking forward to finding new books and seeing different reviews and opinions

Hi, Karen, and welcome to the group. Sounds like your taste is going to fit right in here. (Personally, I wasn't all that fond of Eddings, but I know he has his fans here.) I'm glad you've already jumped into some of our topics. I look forward to read more of your thoughts in the coming year.

Dave | 2 comments Hi, my names Dave. I've been around Goodreads for a while but not joined any groups till now. Currently big fan of Brandon Sanderson, Daniel Abraham, Jim Butcher and Joe Abercrombie. I have been reading Sci and Fantasy since I can remember but the earliest adult book I read was Knights of Dark Renown and have been hooked ever since. This year I intend to read some older classic Sf&F like Jack Vance, Moorcock and Philip K Dick. I do sometimes move into Historical fiction and Horror but mostly its fantasy with a smattering of sci fi.

Hi, Dave. Welcome to the group, and GR-Groupdom in general. (We'll be on our best behavior to be a positive experience!) I hope you'll find it informative & entertaining to exchange book suggestions, thoughts on past books you read, and just plain chat with each other here.

We have some past discussions of his works in the Book Discussions folder. I've really enjoyed reading the SF Daniel Abraham's writes as James S. A. Corey and urban fantasy he writes as M.L.N. Hanover. I should probably try reading some of the books he puts his own name on someday!

Mickey Antoncich | 1 comments Hi. My name is Mickey and I’m a Sci-Fi nut, I been watching, listening and reading Sci-Fi since I watch “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street “on the Twilight Zone in 1960. I do most of my reading thru audible listening. I do like all kinds of Sci-fi, but lately Miles Vorkosigan and Honor Harrington, can I say soft Sci-fi.

Vince Uher Hello. My name is Vince Uher. I live in Scranton, Northeast PA, and have lived in this area my entire life. I love to spend my time with my wife and children, but when I’m not with them, I enjoy bicycling, reading, war board gaming, wooden model ship building, cooking, fishing and lots of other outdoor activities.

I am employed as a police detective for the Scranton police department, and assigned to the Special Victims Unit. I have been a police officer for the past 21 years. I’m also a huge New York Giants fan and huge fan of the band Rush.

S. Nathan (sdotnathan) | 8 comments Hi everyone, I'm Surya. I love stories in all mediums and anything that is more than the reality we have. My favorite series is A Song of Ice and Fire (I can't wait for The Winds of Winter to come out!) and I recently (finally) finished reading American Gods. Cornelia Funke is also an interesting read.

Mainly, I'm an aspiring author and I'm working on editing my first novel in an epic fantasy series. I've also written a sci-fi novel called Ascension, which is on Wattpad.

It's great to be here! :)

May the force be with you.

Infiniteyak | 2 comments Hello everyone. My name is Bryan and I am looking forward to reading with this group. I was introduced to this site through a friend, and I have found it to be fantastic!

I primarily have read the standard sci-fi authors(such as heinlein, asimov), but recently read Shift, Wool, Dust and was impressed. I just finished Grass; it was an interesting read.

message 433: by V.W. (new)

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Welcome Frank, Bryan.

It's so good to know that in SF people still read the classics instead of only going for the latest big thing like some other genres.

Robert Smart Hello, I joined Goodreads when I received my new Kindle for Christmas but, did not about the group's until this week. I am a avid sci-fi/fantasy reader. I have read this genre since I was young. I do read other styles but always fall back to my standby.
I am in a rut right now re-reading a lot and hoping to find new authors. I have found some on Amazon and always looking for more. There can never be to many books on my shelf. Looking forward to seeing what others are reading.

Hi, Robert and welcome to the group! I think you should get a lot of opinions about sci-fi/fantasy authors and books from our members here. Just jump into any conversation that piques your interest.

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Hello Robert, and welcome.

For some reason I was under the impression that GR was a library listing site and didn't find out about the Groups function until recently. Of course, I thought that Facebook was when you dozed off reading bed and dropped your book on your face. Now that I read off a tablet that can be really painful :)

What sort of SF do you like?

message 438: by Robert (new)

Robert Smart Thank you G33z3r and V.W.

V.W. I like to read all kinds. I guess I would have to say I like more action and adventure than most.

Briana Herlihy (annaherlihy) | 1 comments Hey everyone,

I'm Anna, a science fiction/fantasy author new to Goodreads, so bear with me if I seem inept. A little about my reading habits? Ok-

I enjoy stories that transport me to different worlds and keep me there. I like characters who seem normal, until they pull a ridiculous stunt atop a crashing starship and save their lover from a fiery death on an alien planet. I like magic and proper cosmology and having a book linger on in my thoughts long after I've finished.

So, hello everyone, nice to meet you!

I currently worship at the alter of Brandon Sanderson, China Miéville, Frank Herbert and Jack McDevitt. Please be advised that worshipping can change weekly and on a whim....

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Welcome Anna and Kathy, and anyone else I might have missed.

Anna: No better special effects crashes and damsel rescues than in SF!

Kathy: I love Dune, but I'm sure that the Gods of SF are accustomed to fickle acolytes :)

Mort Herman | 1 comments Hi everyone. I’m new to Goodreads and new to on-line groups in general. As a retired engineer and marketing professional with over 30 years experience working for various High-Tech companies, I have, for the first time, turned to writing a Science Fiction Novel.

I am most fascinated with the creative process. In May of 2012, within a 3 week period, I wrote a 20 page synopsis of what was to be a Trilogy that plots the course of humanity and earth through the next several millennia. I plan to publish the first book within the next 6 months.

I grew up with Asimov, Niven and others. Also, loved Babalon Five, the Star Trek series and Battlestar Galactica (not the old one with Lorne Greene). With a little guidance, I hope to gain some insight from like-minded people.
