Hi, James, Daniel & Nikolai. Welcome to the group! I hope you'll find some of our SF&F discussions interesting and join in!

Steph | 5 comments Hello I am new to this group and app I love reading which is why I am here. I would love to write a book but if my dreams could turn them selves into novels I'd have a lot of awesome but weird books.

Looking forward for a good read

Cheers

Sounds like you should sit down and make a start. It took me a long time to write a novel, but just a little every day and suddenly it is done.

Howdy folks! I came across this group because I was reading Silently and Very Fast and I noticed it had been discussed here. I belong to a few other SF/F groups here, this looks like a good one. Judging from the books you've discussed in the past, I will likely be joining future discussions here.

Love the cover art on the group home page by the way!

Howdy, Andy., and welcome to the group. I look forward to you joining us for some future book discussions. (Especially if you enjoy such novella; I really enjoy the shorter stuff, but it's our least popular discussion category.

And if you happen to want to add some thoughts to our discussion of "Silently and Very Fast" or any other previous discussion, please do! We don't close them, and it's always nice to have some fresh thoughts an old favorite.

Tasha (noachis) | 1 comments Hi people! The name is Tasha, nice to meet you all. I decided to join this group yesterday because I don't know a lot of people who enjoy Sci-Fi/Fantasy around me (or just books in general) and I'm lost on what to read. I read just about anything but my favorite genre would be Sci-Fi/Fantasy, so I'm here for both suggestions and discussions. Looking forward to a good read.

Hello, Tasha. Welcome to the group! I think you should get a lot of opinions about sci-fi/fantasy authors and books from our members here. Please join any discussion that catches your interest.

As for looking for Sci-Fi/Fantasy suggestions, you might check some topics in our Recommendations Folder, which has member recommendations based on specific SF/F subjects, or scan some of the entries in the Awards Folder for info on recent award-nominated and award-winning sci-fi and fantasy.

You might also look at some of the opinions in our Book Discussions Folder.

Or if there is a specific kind of story that interests you, just ask! We have no shortage of opinions here.

R.C. Matthews (raymondpluechel) | 3 comments Hey everybody! Looks like I'll fit right in. Well, hopefully, I have a curious body shape. Love Lord of the Rings, Night Angel, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, you know the drill. When I'm not reading fantasy, or playing fantasy, I'm writing fantasy (with a dose of science fiction to keep things amusing).

Hi, Raymond, and welcome to the group. I look forward to reading your comments.

If you haven't already, you may want to check out the Goodreads Author Program and set up an author account. It will let you claim your Author Page, add a picture, promote your books with a blog, schedule of events (online and real world), add a bio, and other tools for connecting with Goodreads readers.

Thank you for the advice! I've actually tried to claim my author page earlier in the day, but the page kept experiencing an error. I guess I'll just try again tomorrow.

Unbroken Silence | 5 comments Hi, I'm Alryss and I basically read all fantasy. I write as well but I'm still in school so I don't have much time. I guess I use fantasy as a form of escapism. I enjoy losing myself in different worlds, particularly those of Tolkien and Le Guin. To all YA fantasy reders, can I just use this to recommend Throne of Glass, a beautiful world with multiple plots and plot twists.

So,umm... That's me, I guess.

H.t. | 9 comments Hi! I'm Herbert. If I had to pick, I suppose I'm more of a Dune guy than a LOTR guy but I'm not picky about what I read in general. I have a fairly cosmopolitan background; I grew up in London and Seoul but I've been living the past 7 years in Paris.
I spent the first 4 months of 2012 in Westeros while the last two months have been spent in Europe and America during the first decades of the twentieth century. I have just boarded a ship bound for the moons of Jupiter to find out what happened to the crewmembers of the Discovery. I also had the pleasure of living inside Adolf Hitler's brain to see what made him such a maniac and how his actions were facilitated by the Nazi state.(Everyone gets that I'm talking about books, right?)
I'm looking forward to becoming pals with all the good folks of this group. Cheers!

Michael Casey | 44 comments Hello, I read sci-fi. I'm trying to find a group that talks about books, and isn't full of authors pestering me to buy their book. I like stuff like William Gibson, Clarke, Palahniuk, Douglas Adams, Howey, David Foster Wallace, Hamlin, leGuin, that sort of stuff.

Also, magical tales, such as 'Strands of Starlight' by Gael Baudino and Dune is my all time favourite, in some ways, so deep. I am a reader at the moment, an avid one and this is my hobby. Also just finished writing a book with a paranormal, alternative history theme, but will not go into that till it is off the ground on Kindle.Do not watch much TV, but like 2001 a Space Oddysey and enjoyed going to the sci fi weekender last Thursday to Sunday at Hafan y Mor.The fancy dress was awesome, all Star Wars characters, Hobbit and so on.

Hi, Michael. Welcome to the group. We can definitely talk about sci-fi/fantasy books here. You might want to skim through the topic titles in our Book Discussions folder to see what we've been reading lately. (None of those discussions is ever closed, so if you'd like to add a new thought to the mix, even in an older topic, please do!)

We're not an author-free zone, as we have a number of authors among our members. We welcome them to promote their work in our Promotions folder. They're a polite lot, and I trust they won't pester you. Authors are, after all, the people who write the books we love to talk about, and knowledgeable fans as well.

Thank you. Do not know about Carl, but sounds an OK costume. Glad you have a positive attitude to authors, as seen in comment on message 544. I hope to be one soon, and would not pester anyone to buy my book, but would stick to your guidelines about a separate folder. More interested in sci fi discussion. Have used some of the philosophy from Dune for a long time, so this site looks great. eg Litany against fear is really true.

Warhammer 40K Yay!

Within WH40K have you tried the "Gaunt's Ghosts" series by Dan Abnett?

You might try The Forge (Raj Whitehall, #1) by S.M. Stirling "The Forge" and the rest of the original Raj Whitehall series by David Drake.

Also try Bolo Brigade (Bolo, #4) by William H. Keith Jr. "Bolo Brigade" and Bolo Rising by William H. Keith Jr. "Bolo Rising".

message 549: by Alan (new)

Alan Spade | 3 comments Hi, Unbroken Silence. I was a bit shaken by a scene on A Storm of Swords, and it made me question if I was willing to continue the reading. I asked my wife about that scene (she's more advanced than me on Martin's books), and she also said she wondered if she would continue.

I don't want to spoil the book, of course, but it's a memorable scene, very vivid in my mind, which makes me think, even if, in my personal taste, I prefer Robert Jordan (author of The Wheel of Time) to George Martin, the latter succeeded artistically with his books.

When as a reader you have vivid memories of a scene, it's always a success for the author, because it means you have been moved.

The two writers, Martin and Jordan, seem to love getting lost in their worlds, and being committed to a never-ending story, with more and more characters and plot. I love it too as a reader, but as an author, my main goal is to keep the rhythm from the beginning to the end. It's why my own fantasy books are a trilogy, with a clear ending on the third book. That was also the initial goal of Jordan, but the story drove him elsewhere.
