Emily (eth0m) | 1 comments Hello all! I just joined this lovely group as I am attempting to open my eyes to some new fantasy and sci-fi books. The first fantasy book I read got me and I've been hooked ever since. My favorite authors include Pierce, Garth Nix, Mercedes Lackey, and Sharon Shinn. Anything that takes me away to a different world and makes me forget the present is a favorite :)

Anna | 2 comments Hi everyone,

Just joined the group of the back of Jim's comment about Michael Moorcock's multiverse heroes in the Multiverse thread...just cause occasionally I might have something to add to the discussions here.
I'm Anna, I live in the UK, I read almost every genre with a leaning towards, scifi and fantasy when I'm not in an equine phase or any other phase for that matter. I - please don't kick me out - really don't appreciate Tolkien all that much although as a recovered RPG-er (well to a point recovered) I've spend a lot of my life around people to whom Tolkien is the god of all things fantasy. I love Moorcock, I adore Gaiman's Sandman and want his babies (Morpheus', not Gaiman's), I think Gemmel is totally underrated and LeGuin should really have written travel guides. When I can't sleep at night, I try to decide whether I want The Heart of Gold more than I want Serenity, although the latter is equipped for transporting horses, which works in its favour and I think I would actually be slightly scared of the improbability drive. That's me in a nutshell.

Moorcock! - Elric & Stormbringer, Corum, Hawkmoon, Count Brass, The Blood Red Game, great stuff.

Hi, I'm Chris. I don't think I've introduced myself here before, but if I have, please forgive me.

I got hooked on fantasy and sci-fi back in the very early 1960s - in those days it was Narnia (which I still love) and the 'Kings of Space' novels of Captain W.E.Johns (my wife got hold of one of these for me last year, and it now seems rather dated). These days my favourite authors include Pratchett, Tom Holt, Tolkien, Susanna Clarke, John Crowley, McKillip, Holdstock... well, a longish list.

Looking forward to reading some good stuff and getting into some interesting discussions in this group.

Hello, Emily, and welcome to the group. (I confess that of the authors you mentioned, Lackey is the only one I've read, but I'm sure there are plenty of fans of the others hanging around here.) I hope you'll enjoy participating in our conversations here.

Eric Zawadzki | 2 comments I'm Eric. I'm here by way of a fantasy series book club. One of the members there (hi, Andreas) has been involved in some interesting discussions with me over there, so I kind of followed him over here, only to discover you're reading Paladin of Souls and will be reading its sequel soon. So I'm in for that at the very least.

I'm a lifelong fantasy and sci-fi reader, a freelance RPG writer, and a fantasy author. While I love reading books, I like talking about them with other people even more. As a consequence, I really have no willpower when it comes to joining Goodreads groups that are discussing books I was planning to read anyway.

Sarah Hi guys, this is the first group I've joined on good reads. I'm a student, waiting for mid year to enrol to improve chances of a scholarship for my PhD in neuroscience and now that I've got some time on my hands I'm on the look out for some new books to read (not that I don't already have a mountain of books on my to-read list). I've read a bit of the dragonriders of pern series and have made a start on the axis trilogy. I'm also looking forward to reading the reality dysfunction (when I get round to it).

Aleah (aleahmarie) Greetings! My name is Aleah and I'm very happy to find this group of like minded folks. I've been a reader of fantasy and sci-if since forever. I'm a librarian in a busy little public library and lead several book discussions in that role. Those groups are devoted to mostly literary fiction but through them I realized the fun in discussing books with others. And now I'm absolutely delighted to find others who love fantasy and sci-if as much as I do! My current literary loves include Ursula K Le Quin, Tad Williams, and Robin Hobb. But I don't get to read as much for myself as I'd like and I'm sure there are other amazing authors out there waiting to be found. Great to be here, can't wait to join the fray.

Hi, Aleah, and welcome to the group! (I'm wondering if a librarian discussing books for fun is like a busman's holiday... Or whether anyone still uses the term Ausman's holiday :) I look forward to having you join the fray!

Issy (whaleridingvulcan) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Issy!! New to the group and Goodreads! Just today!

I'm very very eclectic in what I read. I've read so many Star Wars books out there. I'm currently trying to collect the entire Jedi Apprentice books. I love Fantasy books with a bit of mystery thrown in too. And I'm never one to turn down a romance in the midst of all the Stars or Time Travel LOL

I'm disabled and currently on the hunt for new books! Which is what led me here

Bryan | 313 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Bryan, I've been wandering around these parts of goodreads for a while now and this seems like a friendly group with interesting discussions, so I thought I should introduce myself and hope to be able to contribute.
I grew up with SF/fantasy classics like Jules Verne, Barjavel and HG Wells, and love books that transport me to other worlds.
My favorite authors include Christopher Priest, Dan Simmons, Isaac Asimov, Neil Gaiman... I also enjoy GRR Martin, Kim Stanley Robinson, Terry Pratchett, Ursula le Guin, Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Orson Scott Card, Robert Charles Wilson. There are so many authors I want to discover, currently my big problem is finding more time to read!

I'm an avid TV watcher, in any genre. My favorite shows are The wire, Breaking bad, Firefly (and really, anything Joss does if I'm being honest). I also love Babylon 5, Farscape, The shield and Arrested development, and currently I'm really sad about the state of sci-fi in this golden age of tv.

Hi, Bryan, and welcome to the group. That's a pretty nice list of authors you enjoy. I think we all share the problem of finding time to read everything we'd like to. But I hope you'll spend a little time joining us in our conversations here as well.

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Welcome Bryan!

Continuum isn't too bad though a little soapy, Orphan Black and Paradox I liked. Defiance was so so, but it had Jaime Murray in the almost nude and her smiles make me weak at the knees. And there's always Dr Who. But in general, yes TV's idea of SF is horrible or fun but closer to fantasy.

Greetings, Justin. Welcome to the group. I hope you'll join us in discussions you find interesting (or, start a new topic that is of interest to you.)

I really enjoyed The Windup Girl, too. It took a point of view on the number of interesting issues in biotechnology that haven't been explored as much in sci-fi, and placed it in an interesting locale as well. (Four other authors who are exploring biotech themes, you might check out Nancy Kress, e.g. Beggars in Spain. We had a group discussion of some of her stories here last year.)

Welcome aboard.

Nicholas | 46 comments How's it going everybody? I'm Nicholas. Yeah, that's right, the Nicholas. I'm fan of science fiction and fantasy, of course, but lean more towards the former as my favorite medium of all time is Star Wars-the original original trilogy that is, and KOTOR. I also love the video game series Mass Effect and can't wait for Four (or whatever they choose to call it.)
Beyond that, I'm an aspiring author attempting to publish my sf series, but I do not limit myself to that genre as the next novel I have planned in my mind is a suspense thriller set in The States.

message 481: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettafalco) | 1 comments Hello everyone, my name is Loretta. I'm a chef and bartender. I'm very busy, but on my free time I love to read (read three chapters at work today actually haha), play video and board games, chill with friends, do yoga or work out, and just live life by doing and learning new things. One of my favorite ways to unwind after a rough day at work is drinking a cup of mead or glass of wine and reading.
Eragon was the series that hooked me into fantasy novels when I was in middle school. I really like the Warcraft and Dragon age lore, so I've read some of their books. I've watched Legend of the seeker and started the first book of the series recently. I can't wait to get to the Malazan series; I've heard really good things about it. This is a bit longer than I've intended to write, so I'll wrap it up here

As for looking for new fantasy to read, you might check some topics in our Recommendations Folder, such as Favorite Stand-Along Fantasy and Favorite Fantasy Quest series.

And you might look at some of our recent discussions of fantasy novels in our Book Discussions Folder, including some recent chats about as Paladin of Souls, The Golem and the Jinni, Yamada Monogatari, The Night Circus, and The Emperor's Soul.

Perhaps you'll add to some of those discussions, if you've read those books. We're always open to new opinions!

Stephen Fender (stephenfender) | 9 comments Hello all! I'm Stephen, 38, from the Seattle. Currently I work as a software developer and IT guru, but my real passion is to write.

I spent about 12 years as an automotive mechanic, but it just got too hard on my body. I wanted to get out while I was still mobile, and transitioned to computers (which had always been a hobby of mine).

I love planes, and consider myself a big wing-nut. What's strange about this is that I have a deep fear of flying.

I REALLY love to write. I started back in '99 with my first book (a fanfic) and have since transitioned to my own work. I try to write for at least 30 minutes a day, which is easy to do since I have to take a ferry to and from work. On a good, creative day, I can commit 1500-1800 words towards my work.

I'm currently working on Book #4 of the Kestrel Saga (all of which can be found on Amazon). I also started an off-shoot of the series, the first of which I published just this month, called Origins: Traitor Winds. I published under my own company, JRP, which I established in 2012.

I've got a number of other books in the works, some sci-fi, some historical fiction, but they are all adventures. It's going to keep me busy for the next few years, and I hope it keeps you busy reading my work.

I'd love to get to know my readers better. I'm an open book, and I love taking questions. Feel free to drop me a line on GR, Twitter, or my blog.

Cheers!

I'm looking for books. Fantasy/SciFi/alternate anything as long as it is interesting, the vast selection of books makes finding new books easy but finding those great books blooming hard. I'm hoping to get stuck into some more.
