Baqash | 106 comments I'm with you Jane. I turn 62 this week. What was I doing at 40? At least i know what i think I'll be doing next month, running my first 1/2 marathon. I started running 11 months ago.

Myra (myraelise) | 34 comments Good for you on the 1/2 marathon. I'm doing a 5K in November, mainly to support a friend who has struggled with her weight all of her life and who signed up to force herself to exercise more. It's one of those Color runs, so it's not like there is an emphasis on speed (or actually even running for that matter), but I hope to actually run some of it. But I am not a runner. I'm a cyclist and a hiker. I always get shin splints and that horrible pain in my side when I run. Guess I need to at least do a few runs/jogs before then. :)

Congratulations and good luck!

I do a lot of 5k's. You need suitable running shoes for your running style and that will help with the shin splints. When I first started running, I would get the side pain at about 12 minutes. I tried to run one minute with the pain (run through the pain), and then the next time, two minutes, etc. By the fifth run, I no longer had the pain. Good luck. It sounds like fun.

Connie N. Wow, I'm impressed with the runners (and hikers and bikers) in this group. I need to get myself fit. Does anyone play golf? Or tennis? (I don't but hubby and I are looking for something new to try.)

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) Back from dropping off my daughter at college. I've been on the road for a week and so it is good to be home:) Spent time in New Orleans and Savannah, Georgia on the way back. Both really nice cities.

Baqash | 106 comments I was musing about what is the difference between fantasy and sci fi. On definition by Orson Scott Card said, "sci fi has rivets, fantasy has trees." All well and good until you have a like speaker for the dead and xenocide that have both. another definition differences states, "Science fiction expands our world; fantasy transcends it." Perhaps the two together help distinguish. How about you.

Baqash | 106 comments probably put the how about you in the wrong place. oh well, still a good topic

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) Checking back in. I've was away for 8 days on a mini vacation/dropping my daughter off at college. When I got back I had to work on moving into my new classroom. Our district keeps reconfiguring/renovating old schools/opening & closing buildings. This is my 4th move in 10 years. All this week I had professional development so I'm finally getting a free minute...ok so back to regular programming sci fi vs. fantasy

I seem to remember at one point the difference between sci. fi and fantasy was technology based. Sci fi incorporated "science/technology" ala Fahrenheit 451 while fantasy incorporated more fantastical/magical elements, like Lord of the Rings.

Today I think there is a lot of blending...for example the fairies/elves in a sci fi type setting. I can't remember specific example but I remember reading a book in which the technology/science was fueled in part by magic...so is that sci fi or fantasy?...I don't think it is clear cut anymore.

Hey everyone. Sorry I've been absent. Anyone want to become a co-moderator. I'm having some personal issues that are taking precedence.

Baqash | 106 comments I tried to listen to an audio book today. Just can't get into them.I think part of it is that the reader is distracting. Any thoughts from others?

I love audio books...but only when I'm in bed. It takes me a long time to get through a book because I fall asleep but I find it enjoyable.

That being said, I like very specific narrators.

Baqash | 106 comments if you fall asleep. how do you find where you left of f.

I just skip through it a little at a time until I hear something I don't remember. Use to have to do this with tapes and it's so much easier now with CD's! LOL

I apologize once again for being behind the 8 ball on getting books up. I know you will all need to time to get them so please don't worry about the dates. Just join in if you'd like, when you can.
