There's the Flight 29 Down Series. But, that's from 2006.
Sarah, do you remember why the people were on the island? Was it because of a plane crash or a shipwreck? And, were there any supernatural elements to it? Or, was it a straight survival story?

Sounds like Escape from Lost Island. It's a six book series. Looks like the books are out of print, though. "Stranded" is the first in the series. Stranded!

Did you find this book series or are you still looking?
The summary of Stranded! by Clay Coleman says they're only boys.
"After their plane crashes in the middle of the ocean, seven misfit boys struggle to an uncharted subtropical island, where they find a band of criminals who have been mutated by an ill-fated government experiment and then abandoned."
In which case there's no girls and this is still unsolved.
