I have recently discovered the Harry Bosch Series. I am listening to them in chronological order... currently on the 4th in the series.I am on the road nearly 3 hours a day and consequently I listen to most of the books. I would just like to say that as a detective series I find it very entertaining and somewhat informative as pertains to detective work especially as it evolves through time.

I have enjoyed so many of Harry Bosch books. You havemade a good choice.
Connelly seems to always get it right.
Reading his acknowledgements you know he
is giving you the right info.
Connelly is one of my favourite authors. Hope you enjoy him as much as I do.
Be sure to read/listen to books outside his Bosch series. They're just as good.
I personally feel It is the Best crime series out there!
Being a former homicide investigator, really enjoyed Connelly. He picks up on some police procedures that most others miss. Harry is my kind of guy.
I love the Harry Bosch series too. I don't know how many I've read and I haven't got tired of them!
I can simply say, you lucky guy!!. Because you still have in front of you so many great books that I have behind my back.
Love Harry Bosch series. When Connelly writes a new one I run out and buy it. Enjoy.

Lets face it Michael Connelly is the best American Crime Detective/police precordial series writer EVER.

Connelly is a great writer and his non Bosch bks are just as good. Also check out Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series, a norwegian Bosch. If your wondering why no Bosch films, Connelly sold his rights to the character Bosch early on and just recently won them back. So a film or two should be in the offing. An actor could have a very nice career just playing Bosch.

He is a wonderful writer and he really seems to be a genuinely nice guy. I would strongly recommend reading ALL of Michael's books in chronological order because his characters from his other books are weaved into his books about Harry, Ex: "Blood Work", "The Poet" & "Scarecrow", "Lincoln Lawyer", etc. Otherwise, you will find yourself going back to read them out of order (which I did several times until I caught on). I also strongly suggest checking out his website. He even has pictures taken of different actual scenes from the books in LA. Something else I really like about Michael is he is very generous about sharing names of authors/books he himself really likes in his genre'. I discovered Michael Koyrta, Robert Crais, Peter Robinson, Laurie R. King, James Lee Burke (to name a few) through him. You will definitely enjoy him and all the characters he will introduce you to.
I completely agree with Jo Ann. You really should read the books in order. Connelly does a superb job building the character of Bosch through key experiences found throughout the series. Another fantastic murder/mystery author is Jo Nesbo. His Harry Hole series is incredible. Also, the Kurt Wallander series by Henning Mankell is a must read.

Yes, the series was based on the novels of Mankell. The books are excellent.
Yes, this is a great series. I like his other books too, but I find snippets of wisdom in the Bosch series. I also like how he unfolds more and more information about the characters in each book...and that each book can stand alone if you don't read the others.

Jo Nesbo = awesome. Harry Hole reminds us a little of Harry Bosch, no?
Harry Hole and Harry Bosch have a lot of similarities. But, there is just something about Hole that tips the scales a little bit off the deep end. More edgier? Grittier?

Edgier, definitely. I think Hole is more "off his rocker" that Bosch. Bosch is tired and fed up with everything that he has been through and seen. Hole has a more prominent dark side. Having grown up in Norway, the environment in these books hit home with me.
Welcome to the world of Michael Connelly. I read only true crime until my early 20's when my mum started giving me books she had duplicates of. This was the second series I got totally sucked into (the first was the John Lescroart Dismas Hardy series). I read all of the books up to that point back to back. I had a crush on Harry and by the time I got caught up (I think it was the book before The Narrows), I felt like I knew Harry personally. Love, love, love this series and Michael Connelly. His non-Harry books are just as good so keep 'readin' ;)

His website has a list of the ..."Steve I don't believe the "An Informal Boston Education" is by our Michael Connelly. There is another Michael Connelly from the Boston area. I read his book "The President's Team: The 1963 Army-Navy Game and The Assassination of JFK" and learned there are 2 Michael Connelly authors. It doesn't appear that even Goodreads & Amazon have picked up on that fact.
Michael Connelly wrote a non-fiction book (Crime Beat: 10 Years Of Covering Cops And Killers) that gives some insight into his fiction writing.
Ohhhh, enjoy! He is an author I wish I could discover again just for the pleasure of diving in.
As great as the Bosch books are and as good as the Haller and McCaleb books are, I think Connelly's best book is still The Poet.
I have read all of these books and would recommend them. The Mickey Haller series is also good.
Isn't it great when you discover an author and series that has so many under its belt (so to speak) already? Nothing like working through them knowing that you have heaps to go before you catch up. Sad once you do, and you have to wait for new releases though!
Good discovery!! You will love Harry.....this is one of my all time favorite series. Michael Connelley is an excellent writer and an automatic buy for me.
Is the list of Bosch books on Goodreads in chronological order? Black Echo, Black Ice, Concrete blonde,....? Clearly, the Black Echo refers to some of Harry's history that is presumably in a story somewhere.I have only read The Black Echo so far--and loved it--and so I wanted to see the recommended order before read whatever is supposed to be next.

Go to www.stopyourekillingme.com and click on 'C' by Authors at the top then scroll down the list of authors whose last names begin with C to Connelly's name and click on it. That will bring up a complete list of his books with the year published in parenthesis behind it.
Dave,Thanks. I didn't know if there was a difference between the published order and the chronological order of the story. For example, for the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series, the first one published (The Hunt for Red October) is the third or fourth in the chronological series.
If the published order is the same, then it's a non-issue.
Be sure to read the non-Bosch bks in order with the Bosch bks. Characters show up in a non-bosch bk will show up later in a Bosch bk and its nice to know the backstory.

I didn't at first and missed out on what those other books brought to Harry's story until I finally back-tracked.

Started reading Connelly's books 2 months and boy am i glad or what :)
I'm also a great fan of Connolly, although I prefer the Bosch books to his other work. If you like Connolly try John Sandford's Lucas Davenport or Virgil Flowers series - set in Minnesota/Minneapolis/ Or Dave Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux books set in and around New Orleans. If you're in the USA, for a different perspective, although a similar style to Connolly, try Peter James Inspector Roy Grace series set in the English sea-side town of Brighton, 50 miles south of London! Harry Bosch's backstory is slowly revealed across the books, and it is worth tracking down the short stories if you are interested in more. Some are ebook only, I think. Black Echo is the first book, but you know Harry has a complicated past right off the bat and are intrigued by it.

I am especially impressed by his legal knowledge in the courtroom since he isn't a lawyer. I know he covered the courts as a journalist, but he is still very competent in the law. It makes for realistic reading.
Do not forget that Bosch's grandpa and father are Chandler's Philip Marlowe, Hammett's Sam Spade and Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer. All writer's who should be read if your a fan of Connelly.
Harold: I agree that Connelly's knowledge of the legal system, insight into lawyers and the courts makes for very compelling reading in the Mickey Haller books. If he got it all from following court cases, amazing!
Yes, he did and it is amazing because he is so spot on most of the time.
I have all and have read all the Harry Bosch series, he's got to be the best fictional detective around.I'd say it's definitely best to read them in order.
