I was looking for the thread about Zandie Smith's White Teeth, but I can't find it. Maybe I'm getting old, but I could have sworn someone said something about reading this book this month. LOL!

Beverly, I'll wait for you, if you would like. I have soooo many books to read. We can start anytime. If next month is better for you, that's okay, too.

Please do not wait for me to read this book as not sure what my schedule will be for the next couple of months but I am trying to read it sooner rather than later.
Mr. and Mrs. Doctor 15th of JuneWith Trudy all welcome too.
Well , here we go and I have no idea what I will make of this read ;) How the poor girl did n t give in to the urge to run away on her wedding night I have no idea even if she did n t have a bright future to look forward to in Nigeria.
Hi lulu , just 3/4 of the way through 'the book of night women' ( enthralling but very brutal and descriptive and I'd recommend) Give me a few more days / a week then I'll be good to go :-)

My copy arrived in the mail this weekend. It's my motivation to get through my current reads. lol
Judy, I don't know about Sugar Queen. I haven't seen a thread on it either.
Zanna, The book of Night Women is sitting on my shelf, waiting for me. LOL. I've been trying to get to it for a while. Maybe I need a buddy read for that one.

kisha wrote: "I've only read the book of night women by him. I'll have to check out some others as well."Each of his books is a little from each other.
His latest A Brief History of Seven Killings has won or been nominated for many awards and was just about every Best Book of 2014 list. But is a door stopper at about 700 pages.
We can all do a buddy read on it for October if you want. I'm down for reading it again. What you think ladies?
Here is the link for The Book of Night Women Thread for those who want to join this book read next month. If you already read and would just still like to join the discussion please feel free.
Hi all, Id recently watched a great documentary on JONESTOWN (some may know from pop culture as the ('dont drink the kool aid' incident) of which almost 1000 americans of different socioeconomic classes (majority black with many white) in the 60s (during segregation) came together to 'worship' the preacher Jones - it started off good, wanting ppl to come 2gether and care for each other, love etc, soon basically became a cult which led to the death ('mass suicide or as jones called it revolutionary suicide but survivors have said it was murder) happened in late 70s (78?)I'm egager to read read read as much as i can about it as ive seen many interviews etc. V interesting. anyone interested id be happy 2 read along with and discuss :)
There are heaps of books on it, including these 2 from survivor p.o.v (there were a handfl survivors)
I'd heard of that incident but I knew nothing about the racial dynamic. It's so sad that something so positive (not caring about someone's skin color) could be used for something so atrocious. :(I can just see that being used to justify segregation.
oh it was crazy, i think because of the time frame in which this 'preacher' started the 'church' (the peoples temple) was during segregation - it was a huge thing that black and white were wlecome together (and all got along for the common goal or loving each other, being positive, praising the lord, making positive changes in the community etc etc) but then crazy stuff happened, the dude jones has heaps allegations agaginst him and he turned nuts and all these people (id say 80% black 20 white in the community of followers) were all kind of trapped in this cult- super interesting
Kerry wrote: "oh it was crazy, i think because of the time frame in which this 'preacher' started the 'church' (the peoples temple) was during segregation - it was a huge thing that black and white were wlecome ..."Wow that is fascinating! It would be interesting to see if, during desegregation, people used this as an argument for segregation.

would anyone like to buddy up for LOVE - TONI MORRISON
at some point soon? Morrison is a freaking genius but incredibly hard to read at times. Would love a buddy or 2 if anyone had planned on reading this? (April/may time?)
I tried to read it before but found it hard to follow. Now that I have a little more time I am willing to read along. Just can't make any promises if I can't get into it so hopefully someone will join in jsut in case I can't finish it.

I'd be open to it. I've been meaning to read a couple more of her works to make up my mind on how I feel about her as an author.
Yay ! thanks Ladies :) LuLu, Micaela, Anastasia and Kisha. How about you let me know when you have copies and we can start?
