What are your Favorite SciFi / Fantasy Video Games?
just thoughht of 2 more...these are from back in the day when desktop computers had DOS, not Windows...a RPG game called Rogue (you can still find free downloads on the web of various updates and ports of it) and Super Star Trek...any one rember those?
I'd have to say that the Elder Scrolls games are some of my favorites. Something about being given such an expansive open world to explore, take the roll of whatever type of Hero you could think of, and making you're own adventures. The lore that also comes with those game is so in depth, that it really helps you feel like you are in a living and breathing world. I've gone to the Wiki for those games to read up on the lore, and I've lost hours of my life reading about the history of a made up world.
Bryce, Elder Scrolls is a nice bit of world-building....a real work of art...i also got a kick out of the Dabilo series, its more hsck-n-slash tho, but still fun...kill...loot...repeat...lol

My nephew recommended Borderlands to me.
I would have to go from my childhood fave - Fallout 1 and 2, which I still consider master-classes in storytelling and character development.
I'm not much of a gamer, although I have a few old favorites that I rarely play any more. I certainly don't have time for the complex games like Halo. I did play a bit once. Excellent, but too time consuming. One Must Fall! - an old Epic game, I think. Robots beating the crap out of each other with an underlying story. About a dozen characters & robots to choose from. It was a big game when it first came out. Took 5 floppy disks to hold it all. Lots of fun & there were hacks for playing it across a network.
The first Tomb Raider was a lot of fun, but Wolfenstein was my first favorite. I had several of them, including one that was hacked so that all the Nazis were naked blondes. Sexxy Wolf was the name, I think. It wasn't very, but it was funny. Doom was excellent, too.
At the risk of appearing too old: I spent ridiculous number of sleepless nights playing Master of Magic.
Really liked Diablo II: Lord of Destruction back in the day. The next fantasy game I became obsessed with was World of Warcraft. After I acknowledged my addiction and began recovery after several lost years, I tried Guild Wars, Age of Conan, and all the other mmos until finally burning out on them in 2012. Now, I am proud to say I have been off mmos for 14 months and 21 days.
as a gamer I have many titles that I love from gears of war series to halo to borderlands to Zelda series & skyrim, oh also assassin's creed & who can forget kingdom hearts & final fantasy!...but one that I still miss from the days of basic programming, apple iie's, commadore 64's & atari 2600's. It was called frontier elite 2 & it was a simple space trading game that I loved as a kid with a space ship I got to repair, upgrade, etc. & world's I got to investigate or other ships I could turn pirate against! Great fun!
oh! add in there to an old fantasy dungeon crawling game called dungeon master 1 & 2! I almost forgot that, wow what a travesty!
I definitely have to go with Lord of the Rings Online. I was super into that game a few years ago though haven't had much time to play recently. I loved the world they created and how likely it was to to worlds in Tolkien's books. The role play is amazing and for the most part the people in game are really cool and willing to help. Not to mention the storylines added with each expansion!
the Fallout games have the BEST opening cut seans EVER!!!!
i like Final Fantasy as well...the early ones, before they went all 3D....i have Final Fantasy 7 as well...read it and weep. :p

yeah they do!
My favourites are mostly mmo's. I was obsessed with World of Warcraft but I realised it was too addictive so I cancelled it... I like guild wars too.
for mom I like Castro empires...fly space fleets, attack bad guy guilds. :)
I recently started playing through Dragon Age: Origins and the first Mass Effect games. So far they are both excellent! Mass Effect is an engaging Sci-Fi epic with a really well imagined world and then Dragon Age is fantasy with a really engaging epic adventure storyline. I also love how customizable they both are and how your choices affect the storyline and end results
Hmm its tough to pick a favorite but for sci fi I would say that KOTOR is my fav and in fantasy I would say Elder scrolls.

Vanessa, you are an individual of great perspicacity and uncommon brilliance. Suffice it to say, your opinions precisely agree with my own! :)
I do have to add the caveat that I don't play many video games. Mostly, we play sports games with the PS3 motion controllers (such as tennis or gladiator duel.) But I did try Resident Evil 5 (because it had motion controller support in the Gold edition), and I thought it was okay. I tried a few others, and I like Dragon Age and Mass Effect for the same reason you did, epic storylines and a chance to pursue a lot of different options and make consequential decisions. (view spoiler) Because my playing time is limited by how long arthritis lets me hold the controller, a single game can entertain me for months!
I did have one quibble with Mass Effect, though. I thought the very end, the last 10 minutes, was incredibly aggravating, like the game developers sticking a finger in my eye. (view spoiler)
Dragon Age Origins, II and Awakening were all pretty fun, too, IMO.

There is one I just have to mention: Grim Fandango! My favorite game growing up - still an undisputed classic of a genre that is no more...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oRqDk...
While the first Mass Effect was an incredible achievement, the sequels just didn't deliver the same sense of awe. I'm a huge Sierra fan, so I also have to mention the King's Quest and Space Quest series of adventure games. Classics.
Vardan wrote: "There is one I just have to mention: Grim Fandango! My favorite game growing up - still an undisputed classic of a genre that is no more...This is a classic! Also, the genre is making a comeback. Did you see that Tim Schafer's company, Double Fine, is making a new adventure game?
Fallout, Elder Scrolls, or anything by Bethesda Softworks. I love those games because of the atmosphere, and because it lets me do something I can't do in movies or books--wander off. Other games have sandboxes, but in Fallout or Elder Scrolls I feel like I'm in a fully realized world, and I enjoy exploring the background more than I do the main story. I also like that it's possible for me to do something that latter comes back to bite me in the rear. It's frustrating when at level 28 you realize that at level 5 you killed an NPC that you need to finish a quest, but it lends a realistic feel to the game.Alysia wrote: "I definitely have to go with Lord of the Rings Online. I agree with you about LotRO. I haven't played regularly in years, but I keep my hobbit hole paid up, and sometime I'll log in just to wander around Middle-Earth. And yeas, it has the best community of any online game I've ever played, and I've been playing since the wild and woolly days of Ulitma Online.
Daran, I love Bethesda...they do AWESOME games. :)
I play on PC so I really enjoyed Dragons Age Origins and Awakening. Dragon Age 2 was okay. I finished in on a weekend. Cant wait for 3 next fall.I enjoyed playing Skyrim for a while but the movement was such a PITA for me on a laptop that I quit playing.
Currently playing Guild Wars 2 and Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition. Just bought PlaneScape Torment and looking forward to starting it.
the Mass Effect series, in particular Mass Effect 2. The level of detail and conversations are amazing. I really loved the use of quantum bits for long range communication.
I loved:Ultima Online
World of Warcraft (but I don't have the time time that game demands anymore)
Mostly MMOs... But remember loving Neverwinter Nights!
I second a lot of games already talked about. I also loved Too Human, which was nothing I expected, but loads of fun.
im playing Borderlands 2 on the X-Box 360 now...FUN
I have sooo many that I've loved over the years. The Mass Effect Trilogy, Dragon Age 1 & 2, Legend of Zelda OoT and TP, the Bioshock games, Ni No Kuni, Skyrim, and Xenoblade Chronicles, just to name some of the top ones. :) Alongside my writing and drawing, gaming is my other love.
Battlezone. Unfortunately, my last Windows PC died, so I can't play it anymore. Loved blasting Russians on the Moon!
Played world of warcraft for 5 years +, but am on an extended break of that atm because i hate the pandarens. Now i play Warframe, a pretty cool space ninja shooter
I really love the Tales series... My favorite would be Tales of Graces, though I'm really looking forward to Tales of Xillia 2. I also love the Zelda series, and I recently beat and loved The Last Story. <3
Wow, tough call. Dead Island was awesome, especially if you unlocked the "Left Hand of Glova"- then you could shoot lightning from your hand like a Sith. Awesome zombie face-removing carnage, that. Dead Island: Riptide has no Glova... :(. But it has the Spear Gun and sniper rifle. LOTS of fun. And miniguns. Woot!
Recently, my favorite was The Last of Us. Very real, gritty story, and I loved that the infected were based on very real biology. Just a really well done, engaging game.
Probably the best RPG/fantasy game ever is Planescape: Torment but my absolute favorite was and will be Baldur's Gate 2. Other fantasy games i loved are Dark Sun 2,Fall out 1-2 , The longest journey.Mass effect trilogy and the 2 dragon age games were pretty good too. I played WoW for seven years but i wouldn't rate it that high.
Matina wrote: "Probably the best RPG/fantasy game ever is Planescape: Torment but my absolute favorite was and will be Baldur's Gate 2."I totally agree with Planescape: Torment. This is probably the best story a video game ever had.
And also, what Katy said, The Last of Us seems really great. I only played the first 2-3 hours but it is told very well.

two of my favs...The Elder Scrolls series (RPG games) and the Borderlands series (a shooter series)
