How about this?
08.07. Chapter 1 - 11 (p. 1 - 70)
09.07. Chapter 12 - 22 (p. 71 - 140)
10.07. Chapter 23 - 38 (p. 141 - 210)
11.07. Chapter 39 - 53 (p. 211 - 280)
12.07. Chapter 54 - 67 (p. 281 - 350)
13.07. Chapter 68 - 81 (p. 351 - 398)
I've put the old questions under spoiler tags in the first message. The chapters are a bit different to your reading schedule, but you can read them after you have finished those chapters and that may help spark some discussion for you guys :)

The alternating pov between Amy and Elder kind of disrupts my thoughts. I am not so happy about that part. But maybe it's only me because right now I like Amy far more than Elder.
It's difficult for me to wrap my head around the fact that Elder will lead the people inhabiting Godspeed in the future. He is still a child :)
I also have developed an aversion for the "parent like" Eldest who is or should teach Elder. :)
I don't assume that Orion is Elder's father.
I don't have any idea why the frozen people have been hidden. Hope to find that out soon though.
@Christine
yes, I remember that scene about how they were frozen. Sounds AWFUL! and her experience waking up wasn't much better!
I was thinking of Elder a *little* like the Dalai Lama in that a leader can be chosen, but not be an adult

I'm 60 pages in so far, so I'll answer the previous DQs:
1. Why do you think Elder feels like a misfit?
I'm not sure yet. It could be as simple as that he has an independent streak. Or maybe he really does have mental health problems.
2. Is Orion truly Elder's father?
I didn't get that vibe. I kept picturing Orion as young for some reason.
3. Why do you think all the frozen people were hidden?
I feel like Eldest is up to something with the frozen people. Like maybe he's going to kill them. If he's hiding them, he must have something villainous planned.
4. What do you think the last reason of 'discord' is?
I thought Elder was on to something about "lies." Or maybe chaos or power?
5. Do you think Amy waking up in Chapter 7 was a dream or reality?
I thought it was real.
6. If it wasn't a dream then why did someone try to make her wake up? Who do you think was involved with trying to wake her up?
It sounded like lab techs, so maybe some Shippers tasked with Eldest's super secret plot? It seems like they were disappointed she didn't wake up, but I still want to know why Amy over anyone else.
7. Do you think it's natural that Amy still has thoughts while she is frozen?
That sounds like torture to me, but I think it's impossible. If all of her life systems have been shut down, I find it hard to believe she could maintain consciousness. I wonder if this will play into the story or if the author just wanted to keep Amy's POV going.
8. Do you think Eldest will wake up all of the citizens when the time comes?
I think it's possible he may only wake up a select few.

9. What do you think about Godspeed's version of curse words? (i.e. frex[ing] and chutz)
I like it. Though sometimes made up slang can sound forced, I think it feels pretty natural here.
10. (Chapter 12, page 74) Doc, however, has stopped in his tracks, his face whitewashed. "Are you sure that's just a Recorder?"
"Yeah," I say. "Orion."
Doc sags in relief. "His voice reminds me of someone I used to know..."
Based on this excerpt do you think there is more to Orion than being a Recorder?
I think there's so much more than meets the eye in this ship. Orion clearly has a mysterious past, and Doc has lots of secrets. It makes me want to keep reading!
11. Who do you think 'unplugged' Amy?
Based on the conversation she overheard, this has happened with a young woman before. Maybe someone is trying to create differences.
12. (Chapter 14, page 81-2) "Was it him?"
"No!" I protest immediately.
"Of course not," Doc says. Then, to me, "He's not talking about you."
He turns back to Eldest. "It's impossible, and you know it. You're being paranoid."
"Who are you-"
Who do you think the mysterious 'him' is that Eldest and Doc are referring to?
Someone is subverting the system, and they think he's dead. Is he really? Or is someone taking up where he left off? So many questions!!!

1. Why do you think Elder feels like a misfit?
I feel like it has something to do with the fact that he has a history with mental illness and also the fact that he isn't allowed to know who his parents are.
2. Is Orion truly Elder's father?
I don't think he is. Orion comes off, to me, as a guy that wouldn't be able to keep that from Elder.
3. Why do you think all the frozen people were hidden?
That was my question! I'm really not sure about this one yet. I don't see why they would want to hide that from Elder or the rest of the citizens.
4. What do you think the last reason of 'discord' is?
Hmm..Love. For some reason, love is what popped into my head while reading.
5. Do you think Amy waking up in Chapter 7 was a dream or reality?
Reality. I think that was when someone was messing with her, trying to wake her up.
6. If it wasn't a dream then why did someone try to make her wake up? Who do you think was involved with trying to wake her up?
That's a very good question! Hmm..Eldest is seeming even more suspicious as each page passes..
7. Do you think it's natural that Amy still has thoughts while she is frozen?
Well, according to psychology, it shouldn't happen. But, I think it could be possible and it made the book really easy to get into.
8. Do you think Eldest will wake up all of the citizens when the time comes?
Honestly, no. He's so against Amy and her 'differences'. As the first reason of discord is difference, and Eldest swears by these 'laws', I highly doubt he will allow the rest to become unfrozen unless it's absolutely necessary.

I really like it. At first I thought my Kindle was freaking out! Haha! After reading the Chaos Walking trilogy, I've grown to appreciate authors creating their own spin on modern cussing.
Wow, this part really struck me as odd. At first I felt like it was just a total misunderstanding from Doc. But, now that you bring it up, there does seem to be something fishy going on..
11. Who do you think 'unplugged' Amy?
I still, very desperately, want to blame Eldest. He just comes off as a huge a-hole. But, then again, he's so against Amy's differences. Why would he want to wake her and risk exposing her to the citizens?
I'm not sure, but I feel like this has something to do with how Doc was becoming paranoid about Orion..

Whoever it is must be trying to undermine Eldest's system, but it seems strange that killing innocent people is the best way to do that. What do the cryo people have to do with the way society evolved on Godspeed? I'm so confused about the motivations!
14. Why do you think Orion was so nice to Amy?
I think Orion is smart and normal and not a weird creepy Feeder. :)
15. Why do you think Eldest treats Elder so badly? For example, on p. 145 is says: ...and I know by the way he says it, as if he's a master speaking to a slave, that Eldest means me, not Doc.
First I want to know what perspective Elder has to know how a master speaks to a slave. Isn't he super sheltered and accepts his world? These characters don't always seem consistent to me, but I digress. I think Eldest has a lot of resentment about the last Elder not working out. Eldest is supposed to be getting ready to retire and now he's stuck with this teenager to turn into a leader.
16. In chapter 25 the patients seem erriely emotionless. Do you think this is more incentive to believe that they are being drugged?
I think they are drugged for sure. You would think everyone on board must be. Living in a cage is unnatural!
17. Why does Eldest want the 'patients' in the hospital to believe that they are crazy? (refer to chapter 17)
Because that's the easiest way to explain away their differences and keep them isolated.
18. Are there any noticeable similarities between Amy and William Robertson (#100)?
I am the worst at figuring out mysteries, so no. lol
19. Why do you think the girl "inoculating" the rabbits wouldn't believe Amy, even though the proof was right there?
That was so frustrating! The whole Feeder population feels brainwashed to me.
20. Why do you think Orion was covering the portrait of Eldest?? [On page 197] Why isn't he 'brainwashed' like everybody else?
I think Orion is a secret underground resistance leader or something. Though I really hope he's not the one killing people.
21. Do you think Elder is the killer of the frozen people?
The fingerprint thing sure made it seem like that, but it feels like a red herring to me.

I'm not sure who could have killed Number 100. It is weird, though, that the one that was killed was the last to have been frozen.
14. Why do you think Orion was so nice to Amy?
I feel like Orion understands what it's like to feel alone. He's always stuck behind walls as a Recorder.
15. Why do you think Eldest treats Elder so badly? For example, on p. 145 is says: ...and I know by the way he says it, as if he's a master speaking to a slave, that Eldest means me, not Doc.
It has been stated that Elder reminds Eldest of the Elder that passed away. I'm going to go ahead and assume that the other Elder did something that really got under Eldest's skin.

Yes! Exactly my thoughts while reading those parts.
17. Why does Eldest want the 'patients' in the hospital to believe that they are crazy? (refer to chapter 17)
So that they can depend on others. Also, if they were to hear of any of Godspeed's secrets, they couldn't exactly believe themselves.
18. Are there any noticeable similarities between Amy and William Robertson (#100)?
The only similarity I could see was that they were both different from the rest of the citizens on Godspeed.

I was surprised that the cryo people only went up to 100. For such a huge ship I imagined there were thousands of them. Guess not!

I assumed that there were more frozen people, as well! Unless they froze them and put them in containers at random. Then, in that case, #100 could have been the last frozen. That's only if they didn't go in numerical order.

It makes me think he has a separate water supply to the hospital. But then later with Amy, I got confused. Maybe the special pills for the psych ward are inhibitors?
23. Do you think Amy will drive a wedge between Harley and Elder?
I don't get the impression that Harley is interested in Amy romantically. I think he just likes having friends.
24. Do you think Amy will tell Elder about Luthe's attack?
I hope so! That guy needs to be locked up! That was really scary.
25. Will Amy ever get over Jason?
Yes. If hundreds of years and millions of miles can't do it, I don't know what can. :)
26. How do you think Amy was changed to be like a Feeder?
I noticed she gulped a bunch of water in her room...
27. What is with these pills that the med-patients are using? What are they, and why are they being used?
I'm going with the inhibitor thing. I think the pills counteract the drugs in the water supply. I still don't get why the ship has normal, creative people if all they do is lock them up though.
28. Do you think the 25 extra years was planned all along, or was it actually unexpected?
Not sure yet. I think unexpected at this point.
The functions of the ship and its design are starting to bother me the farther along we get. Where is their fuel coming from? How could they possibly design a ship that could travel that far without knowing it would survive or anticipating all its needs? How do they generate enough electricity and oxygen? Or am I just overthinking this? lol

9. What do you think about Godspeed's version of curse words? (i.e. frex[ing] and chutz) New word creations are fun as long as they don't interfere with understanding the plot.
Yes, he seems not to be a simple person, I suppose there's more behind.
11. Who do you think 'unplugged' Amy? Resistance maybe, someone or some people who are against Eldest.
The dead Elder.
13. Who do you think killed Number 100? And why number 100? Someone who wants to interrupt the voyage or the project itself. The man was in the army, he was an essential leader, therefore important to protect the project.
14. Why do you think Orion was so nice to Amy? I think Orion knows something, more than he should and I am more than curious to hear more about him.
15. Why do you think Eldest treats Elder so badly? For example, on p. 145 is says: ...and I know by the way he says it, as if he's a master speaking to a slave, that Eldest means me, not Doc He is his superior, but that is not rectifying why he treats him badly. I thought it was really cruel that he put that noise punishment on Elder. That's torture. I don't understand his teaching method, if he is seeing it as such. I mean okay pupils should figure out stuff on their own but teachers should help understand them stuff.
16. In chapter 25 the patients seem erriely emotionless. Do you think this is more incentive to believe that they are being drugged?
17. Why does Eldest want the 'patients' in the hospital to believe that they are crazy? (refer to chapter 17) Because she is different from all the people who are "awake" on the ship and according to him difference is bad and leads to destruction.
18. Are there any noticeable similarities between Amy and William Robertson (#100)?
I almost dropped the book on Loc 2197 (Chapter 28) on my Kindle at "Eldest always taught me that Hitler was a wise, cultured leader for his people." Wtf!!!
I have to recuperate from that before I read more...

Now I'm thinking - what if Orion is the believed dead old Elder?!

@Christine... lol@#18..! Yes, it is a very different world they are in ;)
And Logan, you're not overthinking the whole ship thing. It all gets answered in time :) (although I don't remember if in this book or the next one!!)
And Logan, you're not overthinking the whole ship thing. It all gets answered in time :) (although I don't remember if in this book or the next one!!)

@all - I'm definitely up for a buddy read on the sequel, though I'm starting a behemoth next week (A Wise Man's Fear). Maybe end of July? Though this was such a quick read I could probably manage both. I think. :)
lol!! I'm glad you liked it. I will set up a thread for the next book later today with a TBC start date. They are pretty quick reads and I know when I finished this book, I immediately downloaded book 2 and started reading!!

I agree with you on the Hitler part. I was cracking up, saying "If only he really knew..".

She was BRAINWASHED! Duh, haha. It's like North Korea up on that ship!
20. Why do you think Orion was covering the portrait of Eldest?? [On page 197] Why isn't he 'brainwashed' like everybody else?
Uhm..did I miss this part? I don't remember this.
21. Do you think Elder is the killer of the frozen people?
He better not be! I'm totally anti-Eldest at this point, so I hope it's him..

I assumed it was Orion, but then when Eldest came in later I thought it might have been him.
30. Do you think Amy will be able to convince Elder that the history in The Recorder Hall is untrue/tampered with?
That was so crazy! Why go to all the trouble to rewrite history? Why bother taking Earth's history at all?
31. If Eldest/Elder are the only ones who can view data of Sol-Earth then why even change the history? Wouldn't it be smarter to just keep the history since no one else will be able to see it?
I got the impression that each new generation of kids is given some basic history/schooling. But I'm still not sure why it's necessary to teach a history that has no bearing on their present society and circumstances. I guess they're still trying to use it as a method of control.
32. Now that we know the truth about The Plague, Phydus, the inhibitor pills, and the ship being behind schedule do you thing Eldest is evil as we originally thought? How could he (and the Eldest of the past) have went about things differently?
I get that they are trying to preserve hope, but I think it's wrong to underestimate humanity's ability to cope. I think once they got the riots under control they missed an opportunity to rebuild and innovate with a population determined to survive. I certainly don't agree with Eldest but I can see where he's coming from.

19. Why do you think the girl "inoculating" the rabbits wouldn't believe Amy, even though the proof was right there? I think she was too brainwashed by the Eldest, she would never believe the "crazy" girl.
20. Why do you think Orion was covering the portrait of Eldest?? [On page 197] Why isn't he 'brainwashed' like everybody else? -No clue. - Orion - huh - I just don't get the picture what's wrong about him.
21. Do you think Elder is the killer of the frozen people? I don't know, why would he do that, if they are essential for when they finally arrive at their destined planet? But he is a tiny bit paranoid.
22. Why are some people not affected by the hormones that Eldest puts in the water during The Season? (like Victoria, Eldest, and Harley) Good question, it seems like all the people in the Ward are acting quite different than the Feeders. Except for Luthe who is creepy. Than the doctor must give them pills that are kind of counteracting with what happens to the others.
23. Do you think Amy will drive a wedge between Harley and Elder? No, I dont think so. I think they have different motives why they act as they act towards Amy. Elder definitely has a love interest. But with Harley it feels kind of different.
24. Do you think Amy will tell Elder about Luthe's attack? Luthe is creeping me out, he should get locked up. I am all for telling him about what happened.
25. Will Amy ever get over Jason? Yes please. They are going to travel a rather long time so she should live in the present and not in the past.
26. How do you think Amy was changed to be like a Feeder? The water, it's in the water, I can't believe it, she is really drinking lots of water in her room.
27. What is with these pills that the med-patients are using? What are they, and why are they being used? I still don't understand why the people in the Ward are not affected by the pills in the same way as the Feeders. And I don't understand why they lock away these people. I suppose the people in the ward get a lot of meds, ...
28. Do you think the 25 extra years was planned all along, or was it actually unexpected? Unexpected.
29. Who do you think was hiding in the shadows while Elder and Amy were in The Recorder Hall during chapter 57?
30. Do you think Amy will be able to convince Elder that the history in The Recorder Hall is untrue/tampered with? They trust each other, there is no reason he shouldnt believe her that the history has been changed when other stuff he has been told is also untrue.
31. If Eldest/Elder are the only ones who can view data of Sol-Earth then why even change the history? Wouldn't it be smarter to just keep the history since no one else will be able to see it? There are always people who dig stuff up.
32. Now that we know the truth about The Plague, Phydus, the inhibitor pills, and the ship being behind schedule do you thing Eldest is evil as we originally thought? How could he (and the Eldest of the past) have went about things differently? The stuff with Phydus made me outright sick. I didnt like Eldest from the beginning and my opinion never changed, yes, he is evil, the lies are evil, people deceiving like that is not nice.
33. At the end of chapter 71 Elder believes that Orion was giving him a test. What exactly was Orion testing/trying to evaluate about Elder? If Elder is more like Orion or Eldest.
34. Do you think that Orion could be a better leader than Eldest? They are both nuts. Eldest because he did not lead the people to a better future but treated them like lab rats. And Orion was killing off the frozen people with a military background because they might be a threat in the future for the people on the ship.
35. Were you surprised by Harley's suicide? Yes. I mean it was said that he had his dark sides, his girlfriend Kaleigh also took her life and he was kind of unhappy, but I liked him so much, I would have preferred to stay with us. I don't like it when the author kills off people I like :(

I want to know what's next too. I haven't bought it yet, but I will soon!

What is a buddy read?
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming
Note: This book was read by the group as a buddy read in 2011 and that thread is here. Be warned, it contains spoilers.
