Suggestions so far:1. Covers with Anti-Rainbow colors (white, black, grey)
2. Behind Enemy Lines: Books shelved as READ by members of other teams any time.
3. Spell-It-Out: Magenta Mix-Up (Will use Book Title, Author First/Last Name)
4. Books with plants/animals on cover
5. Around The World: Books set in different continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, North America, South America)
6. Short is Sweet: Books less than 350 pages
7. Cover Option: Rainbow colors on Cover
8. Series Mania: Read a book from any series that you have already started (i.e #2 onwards)
9. Connect Four:
1. Hook up the last letter in the title OR the Author OR Series Name
Ex: Gone GirL > Lovely BoneS > Sophie's ChoicE > Ender's Game
2. Hook up with a word in the title
3. This might sound iffy but how about genres? (And let's say you can't repeat genre?)
Romance -> Historical -> Fantasy -> Mythology
Game:
Scrabble - Magenta's August Monthly Challenge.
One idea that came straight to my mind was reading books with covers in anti-rainbow colors (white, black, grey etc.) We always had to read ones with really bright covers so this might be a change. What do you think?
Did you all like Behind Enemy Lines? We could repeat that category but we'll make it as book read any time (instead of after April 12)
I like both those suggestions :)It might be easier if we do break things down a bit like for 7%, since we have to read so many more books it will give a bit more of a variety to choose from.
A spell it out of some sort would probably be good too, since for 7% that worked well for the books that didn't really fit in anywhere else.
Spell-it-out sounds good for me too. Maybe we could use "Magenta Mix-Up" or "August Challenge"?I really liked the Behind Enemy Lines. If we could use a book read any time it would make things so much easier.
I also thought of reading a book with any kind of plant (tree, flower, grass etc) on the cover or in the title. We could also do the same for animals.
Something else I'm doing for other challenges is read one book for each region of the world. Usually there are Africa, Asia, Australia, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, North America, South America and sometimes also Antarctica.
We definitely should break the whole thing down and have different categories. The more categories we have, the easier it should be.
Ellinor, we should definitely break it up into different categories. Some teams are doing games like Scavenger Hunt or Risk which is different and neat. It's all up to us.The only issue I see with spelling out Magenta Mix-Up is mainly the X. Books/Author starting with X is difficult to find. Otherwise, I'm all for using it.
Ellinor, I'm liking the books set in different continents. I think one of the other teams are doing a Around the World Challenge similar to this. And how about another category: Short is Sweet - books less than 350 pages? It'll help boost up the numbers as well.
I really like the Short is Sweet idea. It would be kind of the counterpart to the junksters.About the X: I don't think it will be a problem if we can use author names. I have one by a Chinese author sitting on my shelves (Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong) which I have been wanting to read for quite a while. I might just read it in August.
For the Spell-It-Out, we can use the Title, Author First name or Last Name. That book looks neat, Ellinor! For the Short idea - While I really hate to encourage shorter over longer books, I'm hoping it'll help bring our numbers up.
Magenta Mix-Up is 12 letters. While each category need not necessarily have equal number of books, maybe we could have 7 categories with 12 books leading to 84 books to be read. Though we need only read 75 books, we could always aim for more. Does that sound good?
7 categories with 12 books sounds good. We just need some ideas for different categories now. I'll look into Scavenger Hunt and Risk how these work so that we can maybe use something similar.
7 categories sounds good to me too, and already about 5 categories have been suggested. I know a cover colours thing has been suggested (anti-rainbow) but it seemed like we got blue covers done fairly easily last time, so maybe we could throw in a "rainbow" section or something too, if no one comes up with anything more inventive :)
You could make an exception for "X." You could allow any titles, series names, or authors' names that have an "X" in them.
I have compiled all options in Post #2. Any more suggestions? Also, how about Allison's ideas? Can we work out Scrabble as a reading game?
Sorry Allison, I didn't get notification for this thread. That's a good idea. Is this how you are thinking: Each person can choose their word and spell-it-out?
Hmm I'll have to check with the mods on that one. Because, they have allowed only upto 24 letters for Spell-It-Out which is basically what we are talking about. I'll get back to you on that one.
Sorry, Allison for dropping the ball. I've been busy helping out a friend and couldn't come OL.Based on the mods' rule, the limit for Spell-it-Out even if we don't have the words before hand is 24. I'll check with the mods jic but mostly it might not work for the August challenge. But, what I suggest is we can have it as our own monthly challenge for August. How's that?
MM, you're suggesting doing the categories thing for the official August challenge and scrabble for our unofficial magenta challenge? That sounds fine with me - the best of both worlds, so to speak! :P
Yes, correct. We can have our own scrabble challenge using the books we've read for the Official August Challenge. I'm going to come with more categories so that we can all vote. Does that sound good?
I spotted and idea on a list for another team, and that's to read books in a series you've already begun, so #2 onward. Can't remember which team to give the credit to for that one, but I can look around. I'm already doing this as my own little summer challenge to get through several series I started and never continued, so I would be thrilled to combine the two :) Also, I love the board game idea! What about a 'Connect Four' type idea, hooking up the last letter of one book title to the next book? For Example:
Gone GirL > Lovely BoneS > Sophie's ChoicE > Ender's Game
That's a good one, Blakley! I'll add the series idea to the list. For the Connect Four, I'm thinking. I'll post agian.
Blakely, for the board game idea with the Connect Four, how about a broader range?1.
Romance -> Historical -> Fantasy -> Mythology
How does this sound?
From the suggestions posted in the Discussion Thread, here are the categories that will work for the August Mods Challenge. If you have any concerns, please let me know by today. Otherwise, I'll be submitting it for the mods' approval.Official August Monthly Challenge

The challenge will last the entire month of August and as a team we will have to read 75 books.
This thread is for suggestion/discussion of the August challenge.
Note:
1. They need not be single category or idea. They can be broken down into categories like 7%. Say, we can do a spell-it-out of Magenta Mix-Up or some other thing.
2. Some other teams are doing (a read-off) of board games like Risk or other games like Scavenger Hunt.
All crazy and sane ideas are very welcome!!
