Heeey!!!

How do you guys feel about when characters use slang? For example in The Maze Runner the Gladers have their own slang ("clunk" is poop, being called a "stick" is an insult) and in Blood Red Road the characters all speak with a western accent.

I personally think slang adds to the character and overall uniqueness of the story.

If you've read either of the aforementioned books, let me know what you thought! Does slang bother you? Do you like it?

I like slang.

Tabreya I like slang in books. It makes the characters seem more realistic because not everyone in real life speaks like a dictionary. =)

Imari (yonna7) | 26 comments I feel like slang and books creates an atmosphere that we young adults (or just people in general) can connect to. Like Tabreya said, most people don't walk around speaking like a dictionary. It's colloquialism (I spelled it right on the first try! I feel so proud.).

Angelli (angchelle) | 69 comments Yeah I agreed with you, slang gives the characters more life, you know?

Jojobean It doesn't bother me at all

Alicja | 10 comments The first time I read Blood Red Road I hated the dialect writing. But now I love it. It made me instantly transported back into that world when reading Rebel Heart. The slang helps the novel stand out too amongst all the other YA lit

Yeah I felt the same way, the first I read it it irritated me, but the second time I really enjoyed it.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I feel that if slang is essential to the character, it should be there.
