Rachael Gaffney | 5 comments There was a book I read, I believe in the late '80's or early '90's, that I am trying to locate. The premise was Virgil as a guide for some hapless modern man (can't remember anythign else about him) through a Divine comedy setting. I remember Beatrice was a strong central element. The setting was also modern as I remember Virgil driving Italian sportscars.
In the end, I believe, the man being led was a reincarnated Dante.

Based on my reading habits at that time and the plot, I believe the book would be classed into the fantasy genre.

Some may suggest Niven's Inferno, but that is definitely NOT it.

Any help is appreciated.

Serendi It's been a lot of years and the tone sounds all wrong, but Wolfhead is a Dantean story. I think Dante or Virgil was in the form of a wolf. It wasn't the Inferno but more a metaphorical version of it. In fact, in some ways it seems more like Orpheus and Eurydice but I really think the woman is named Beatrice. I remember it as being very fast-moving and intense.

Rachel, are characters actually named Virgil and Beatrice?
Who are the people they encounter in Hell?
What's the starting location/country?

This may not fit the publishing time, but -- Gabriel's Inferno

Tdr85 | 28 comments Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Inferno.

Rachael Gaffney | 5 comments Kate, I'm afraid it's defintiely not that one. The one I am looking for was written well before 2011.
Tdr85 - that may be it. It sounds very familiar, but I'm no entirely sure that's the one. I will check that out, though. Thanks for your help everybody.

Michele | 2488 comments Are you sure it isn't Niven and Pournelle's Inferno? It's quite a close match, including the car.
