Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh brill Michael! Thanks.

You have no idea how lost I can get in the interweb when I search for stuff. :(

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I've spent £64 odd now on Amazon, using the tag, since yesterday. I'm putting a shower over the bath so have bought all my shower stuff off them, shower (only the push on the taps type), rail and curtain etc. Really wish I'd known how to do it sooner when I think of the other bits and pieces I've bought recently.

Do you get sent a statement saying how much you get from our purchases or do you have to claim it?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think Simon gets a statement.

Not sure how frequently.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Michael wrote: "Yes you can tag gift cards, they have a decent percentage as well (6% according to my reports)."

So am I right in thinking that if I want to buy something for say £50 I could buy myself a £50 gift voucher, using the tag, so that we get a percentage of that and then if I used that voucher to pay for something that was £50, using the tag, we'd get it again. Am I being silly or have I found a loophole to get more money?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I really wish Simon would look at this thread.

Grrrr

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Simon is off boozing in portugal with a group of reprobates. I saw the picture on facebook.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments So a typical weekend for him then.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Have to wait till he comes back then for an answer. It'd be good if we can get it twice though ;0)

message 59: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments It's possible we'll get from vouchers and the item you buy with the voucher cause if I buy the voucher with our tag there is no guarantee that the person I give the voucher to would be using the same tag.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Well if it does work out we can get it twice I'll buy a gift voucher in future before I make a purchase.

You should, but I've not tried it.

I think that might be the case. I can't be sure because it doesn't tell me who is buying stuff and how, but when a voucher goes through (once in a while) it does us a power of good!

Porto was very nice. Hot. Lots of Port. Hilly.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Great, I'll buy gift vouchers for myself before I buy anything again then. Hope others do too, might as well take advantage if we can get money back twice.

Glad you had a good time Simon.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Right I've just bought a gift voucher for myself. I wasn't sure at what stage of the process to add the tag so I added it twice. Once when I put the details of where it was going and the amount and the other where you click to pay.

Can someone please tell me at what stage you're meant to add the tag?

message 65: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) You need to add the tag before buying it, so grab the URL of the Amazon page you're going to buy from, add the tag and reload the page and then buy the item.

If you've already clicked on a link with the tag in it the tag will remain automatically until you click a link with somebody elses tage.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Let me get this right lol. When you go to buy a voucher you get to a page where you can have it e-mailed or in paper form. I clicked the e-mail page and that is where I put the tag on the URL is that right? I never refreshed the page though.
Also I've just bought a book. I added the tag to the URL on the book page before I pressed the one click button. Again I didn't refresh the page.

I bet I've buggered it up somewhere lol.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments So If I go to a page with a tag on & delete the tag and replace it with our tag will that register as ours or the original link that I followed?

message 68: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You add our tag on to the end of the original link, Janet.

message 69: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) It should overwrite the previous tag if you reload the page with the new one.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Michael wrote: "It should overwrite the previous tag if you reload the page with the new one."

that is what I hoped would happen.

message 71: by Adam (new)

Adam (adammannan) | 133 comments Thanks, it's really helpful to know all this. I like this community; it's guaranteed to make me smile and that's after I get up from rolling on the floor in hysterics. I've altered my Amazon shopping accordingly. BTW thanks also for recommending that slow cooker and lawnmower! I'm sure they'll read fine.

message 72: by Simon (new)

Simon Jenner (simon_jenner) | 112 comments I bought a couple of things using the group tag yesterday. I hope they went through OK (a toy and a toner cartridge if you can check) as I order from Amazon quite regularly. They've not dispatched yet though. More stuff next week.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) This should be what you need:

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments I finally remembered to add the tag to the phone case I was buying today :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yay!

message 76: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments Just bought about £30 of presents (including one I'd forgotten to get for my Dad's birthday next week, whoops!) and remembered the tag just in time! :) Does P&P count too?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good remembering Claire!

I've got to do my big order soon or it won't arrive in time for us to get home.

Good question about p&p. I doubt it but Simon would be the one to answer that.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Oh I may have missed this thread before, I will see if I can work it out

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It's really not that difficult. I was able to sort it out after only half a dozen explanations.

And diagrammes. The claymation really did it for me though.

Gawd I miss Harryhausen.

Don't we all?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Only we oldies, Michael.

I've been teaching short people who were born in 2009 all week!

What's truly shocking is that they frequently have more deeply meaningful insights than people who have inhabited this planet ten times longer.

message 82: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) It's because everything is new to them and full of wonder :-)

message 84: by Lisbeth (new)

Lisbeth Foye | 1 comments Coming in late to a thread leads to (my) confusion. I'm I right in thinking that if I buy from Amazon, add some tag I then get a discount?

I've done all my Christmas shopping but there's always something new to be had...I'd like a pressure cooker.

I use a slow-cooker but staying at a friend's house the other week she cooked a casserole in her pressure cooker, as delicious and tender as slow cooker but only took just over an hour. That's why I'd like one :-)

message 85: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) No, adding the tag means that the group gets a commission on the sale.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Tag it and we can have chicken sandwiches as well as cheese at the get together.

If you see a & in your link just add &tag=ethings-21 at the end.

You don't get discount but all the money goes to my yacht group funds

message 87: by Tdhcom (new)

Tdhcom | 1 comments Glad you posted how to do it Jud, I had no idea. I'll do it on all future orders now. I expect it all adds up to a reasonable amount after a time

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Has the group made much money from this Simon?

I use the tag all the time when I buy something.

Also can I ask something? If I buy from Amazon going through the RNLI site they get 5% of your purchase price. Does that cancel out our tag though or will both benefit?

message 89: by Elaine (new)

Elaine White Going to share this group on my blog too, using the widgets. :)

I've been looking at a few other GR groups recently, but the people in them seem to be - disappointingly - rather normal.

Trish Watson (TrishWatson) | 10 comments I'm a bit confused by your posts. Is this a general discussion or a literature one. Not being sarcastic, genuinely confused. New to sight and am author, pushing book, of course, but within guidelines. Do you discuss non-fiction. Grateful for any info. Thanks Trish Watson

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments There are places for authors to promote, you might want to start by reading this thread:) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
and this one. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

There are various threads about various topics, some more serious than others. I think this post is (supposed to be) about using the affiliate links, gaining the group some Amazon pennies to use for advertising, giveways and what have you.

message 98: by Rosen (last edited Feb 23, 2014 02:42PM) (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments I don't know if anybody has posted this yet because I don't have time to read all 98 comments, but

&tag=ethings-21

almost certainly only works if there's already a ? in the url.

What I mean is that urls are structured like this:

myurl.com?a=1&b=2&c=3

where the first parameter (a=1) is denoted with a ? and every parameter after that (b=2, c=3) is joined on with a &.

Thus, you could be losing commissions on every url without a ? already in it.

Unless anybody contradicts me, you might earn more money if you edit the initial post to say

'add &tag=ethings-21 to any link with a question mark in it, or ?tag=ethings-21 to a link without'

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've not looked at this thread in ages and I somehow missed Rosen's post above.

Simon, is what Rosen said correct, do you know?

I've been madly ordering stuff as I do every holiday and I really hope the group is getting the pennies!
