Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Okay, I love exercising. I once worked as a fitness instructor. Rubbish pay, but a fun job where I got to interact with lots of people.

My average exercise routine now looks something like the following:

Tae Kwon Do 2 or 3 times a week. Each session lasts between one and one and a half hours. Great cardio workout.

Jog 2 times a week. I generally don't have a specific aim. I was going to train for a marathon, but complications from a sprained ankle last year look to have put paid to that. I am running in the JCB Mud Run this coming Saturday though, as I love running in obstacle/mud races.

Gym 2 times a week. Mainly just use it for general keep fit and toning, using various weight machines and the stationary bikes and rowing machines.

Swim once every couple of weeks. I would like to go more, but it's hard when I work shifts, and I'm a rubbish swimmer.

So who else exercises, and if so, what do you do?

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Wow! Shaun that is a lot of exercise!

I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and do just over an hour each time (a lot of cardio as am trying to lose weight so treadmill, rowing machine, the hand bike thingy, recliner bike and then have some weights too) On one of my trips a week I add a half hour swim too.
I am gonna try to start up going to Zumba again once a week as I really do find that a lot of fun.
Have to say I am loving the gym at the moment despite finding it tough going

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments That's excellent, Emma. Keep up the good work :)

message 4: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments I will do, thanks Shaun :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I don't exercise Shaun! But I wore a pedometer to work recently and over the whole day I totalled nearly 23,000 steps. That of course doesn't include 80-odd shelves that I had to lift off then dismantle their trolleys. Over the last two months my biceps have gone from something resembling a knot in a piece of string to well, a muscle. Plus once I've pushed watering buggies containing 80 litres of water ie more than 100kg weights all around the town I don't think I need much more exercise really! Though I do like going out for a good walk. Never been in a gym (except once by accident when I was looking for the toilet!)

message 6: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments Does an hour of pilates a week count?

I know I don't do enough although I do spend a lot of the day on my feet rushing around the lab and walk at least 10 minutes to and from my local metro stop.
I really do want to get fit though, I just lack the motivation to keep at it. It would help though, particularly with one of my jobs which is a mixture of sitting around for a while followed by some running, some walking, some carrying people, shifting people and bags around.

message 7: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Rosemary and Claire, any exercise is better than none, but I find that as I have a stressful job, the exercise helps. I've now ordered a punch bag, which should arrive in the next few days. This will provide stress relief and exercise in one fail swoop - or punch or kick ;)

I also find as a writer that exercising allows me to relax and resolve plot issues.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oops.

I seem to have ended up in the wrong thread.

message 9: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I walk to work and home again about 25 mins each way. Plus I walk the dog. I used to do an hour of yoga a week but they stopped the classes so am trying to do a wee bit at home but its not the same. Used to go swimming a couple times a week too (I get for free with Uni!) but that stopped when hubby took ill, we're hoping to start up again.

I want to start going for runs again, I did it for a while when out in the country and quite enjoyed it. Mean to start up a new class as well cause I get free off peak membership at the sports village through Uni.

message 10: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Walking is good. I like hiking and going to places that I've never visited before. It's quite surprising how many public rights of way and bridleways there are all over the country, usually right on your doorstep or close by that you probably drive past without ever noticing. It's these places that I like to investigate as they can take you on some lovely walks that you might not otherwise have discovered. It's also the little things, like taking the stairs rather than the escalator or the lift.

message 11: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments We normally go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week - half an hour on the exercise bike with my kindle and I can read quite a bit. Quick swim, and that's about it. Garden a bit, wander round NT places, but at my age, I do what I feel like.

message 12: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments My sessions down the gym are great stress relievers.

message 13: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I do 40 minutes of yoga on the Wii fit a day, does that count? Haha

message 14: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I walk practically everywhere. I do a strength workout 3-4 times a week. Lately I've been working cardio into my workouts too. I aim to do something active every day.

I used to swim most days but I got out of the habit due to hectic semester and am currently working on my shoulders so I can go back (I have a few issues with my muscles so I kinda have to work up to it)

message 15: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I had a lot of exercise over the weekend. Now my arthritic feet hurt and the knee I twisted earlier in the year aches.
I do find that people who take a lot of exercise often do themselves damage.
Be careful out there!

message 16: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments I walk to the station from home, then from the station to work, then from work back to the station, then I run home from the station, then I try to do a 5km run on the weekends and take the inlaws dog for a walk.

I then supplement that with a few weights sessions during the week.

Not really enough but it is all I have time for.

message 17: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Love your pic Lindsay :o)

Sounds like plenty exercise to me

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I don't do exercise as such, but would love to get a pedometer to see just How much walking I do, especially today when I've walked uo and down stairs at least twice as many times as I needed to

message 19: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I meant to take my pedometer to Disney but completely forgot

message 20: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments Nothing.
I have a Samsung Smart telly and there's an exercise channel on it that has some mini exercises that look interesting, but I'm still working on getting a range of movement back in my arm.
I did do belly dancing and am planning on starting that back up.
My problem is I don't like sweating.
And all the fit people in work seem to have colds and aches and are forever being ill, but me, I rarely get ill.

message 21: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments Well, if we're talking about what we USED to do.. I used to do fencing once a week, netball once a week, aerobics once a week, pilates once a week, and horse riding twice a week! All for an hour/ hour and a half each time!

Now i'm working on getting movement back into my knee, and trying to find some classes to go to as my local ones closed!

message 22: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I'm doing LOTS of walking. And it shows :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Shaun is working tonight so I'm just gonna drop this here pound of bacon in here while he's out. :D

message 24: by Jud (last edited Jun 24, 2013 01:12PM) (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments You looking super sexy now instead of just sexy, Lorraine?

Caught you just before I leave the house. Swapped it for some nice fruit.

Its good to see so many people enjoy (or at least do) some exercise.

message 26: by Weenie (new)

Weenie I do 20-30 mins of weights followed by Body Attack aerobics twice a week. If I'm not hungover on Sunday, then I sometimes do a Body Balance (yoga/pilates) class. Occasionally, in addition to weights, I'll have a session on the punchbag.

At home, I have an aerobic hula hoop which I don't use often enough!

Damn. Foiled.

Actually, I do exercise. Ish. 20 minutes walk to the bus to school. 35-40 minutes walk from the bus home. Chase kids all day.

We'll be doing some trekking in Vietnam and hopefully a lot of swimming if the weather co-operates.

message 28: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Always fancied trying yoga, Weenie.

Proud of you, Patti.

message 29: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I walk a couple of miles a day every day pretty much as a minimum. Not the manual work I used to do, but I did spend a day pushing ewes into a race for the shearers without ill effect (except next morning when I got out of bed I stretched like an old dog ;-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Do I get a cookie?

message 31: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yoga would be good for your core muscles Shaun if they are being neglected, also for relaxing.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Is it too early in the day for me to talk about Shaun's core muscles and just how non-neglected they look?

Probably.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I walk whenever I can. Weather permitting I'm walking during my lunch break from work. I'm trying to lose weight at the moment so I've also dug out the wii and have been doing some of the stuff on that.
I'm losing weight because I need to, and getting fit so that I can take part in something like a 10k run next year - as long as I can complete the course by walking!!!
Over the last few weeks there were three different walks/runs here all for cancer charities or the hospice and my nephew and I have said that we aim to do one of them next year to raise money in memory of my dad.

message 34: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Well I figured they wouldn't be but that's what Yoga is good for. It actually gave me some arm muscles though, I can now see my lateral head of tricep when I tense my arm which even one of the anatomy demonstrators couldn't feel when I was at uni (this sounds wrong), he had lovely arms and I got to feel them...

*Drools*

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I had wonderful definition in my arms back when I worked in a factory.

message 36: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments I know I was a lot fitter when I had kids and dog, didn't drive and no bus service - it's a mile and half into town, uphill coming back, pushing the double buggy. And a mile and a half to playschool/school and back, three times a day. Definitely a lot fitter then. And younger. Sigh...

Jim | 21809 comments Patti (Number 69) wrote: "I had wonderful definition in my arms back when I worked in a factory."

My little sister did a lot of sailing when she was a student and had impressive shoulder muscles :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'd love to sail. Haven't in years. The Great Lakes are wonderful for sailing.

I've sort of looked at buying a boat in Baku but they are stupid prices. So are slip fees.

I'll just need to make friends with someone who owns one. ;)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments I quite often walk past a gym.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Darren wrote: "I quite often walk past a gym."

Try jogging past it and see if it helps.

On avoid it by taking the long way round

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments Blimey, Shaun! I get out of bed every morning, does that count?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Shaun wrote: "My new kickbag arrived this afternoon :)"

No. I'm still here.

Send more money.

message 46: by Adam (new)

Adam (adammannan) | 133 comments I really think exercise is important too. That's why I have the kitchen and writing space on different floors. Every time I fetch munchies and beverage I use the stairs twice! Wow, that's so inefficient, I should stockpile.

message 47: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Jun 26, 2013 04:50AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ha! Our flat in Baku has two stories. I keep a basket for stuff that needs to be carried up at the bottom of the stairs so I can make fewer trips.

:D

message 48: by S. (new)

S. Trust | 16 comments I have been exercising regularly since Y2K, so far I found that Stronglifts is the best practical training routine for working men. I tried a lot of things though.

message 49: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Yes, core muscle exercises can be very effective, Tarek.

message 50: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments A pal of mine thinks she may have a prolapsed uterus (the nurse wasn't sure) so don't neglect those pubococcygeal (PC) muscles ladies!
