Peter Lance | 12 comments I'm just new to Goodreads - an author.

I have two questions:

First there is an earlier edition of my new book "Deal With The Devil" from HarperCollins (originally called SIX SIX SIX) and I want to remove it. The reason why is that I wanted to offer "Deal" as a Giveaway and when I typed in the ISBN it identified it as SIX SIX SIX. Can anyone help me with this?

Second I would like to ADD the new edition of my first novel from Penguin-Berkley FIRST DEGREE BURN which is now being sold on amazon.com and createspace. Many thanks

Janeka | 375 comments Peter,

Was 'Six Six Six' ever published, or was that just temporary title?

Second, the new edition of 'First Degree Burn' already exists. Here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

message 3: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments No changes to published books should be made including changes to titles and covers

A new edition should be added. The ISBN belongs with the first edition

If you are trying to do a giveaway but do not have a different ISBN then you need to contact GR support using the contact us link on the help page

Janeka, Many thanks. I didn't realize that FIRST DEGREE BURN was listed.

Meanwhile, SIX SIX SIX was the original working title and the book was delayed for several years after getting an ISBN. But it was never published. The book is now called DEAL WITH THE DEVIL and will be published July 2nd. I want to remove SIX SIX SIX because it is keeping me from offering the actual published book as a Giveaway.

Also Janecka when I went to my author's profile page I could not find First Degree Burn listed. Can you help me add it to my list of books? Many thanks again.

Paula, As noted above SIX SIX SIX was never published. It was a working title that happened to have the same ISBN as my current book which I would like to have the Goodreads community review and comment on. I've been trying to Giveaway 10 copies but because the Giveway keeps defaulting back to the title SIX SIX SIX and actually giving outdated information from an old amazon.com pre-order page, I'm being thwarted.

Let me know if you have any advice. Thanks Peter Lance

Janeka | 375 comments Peter,
you can find the paperback edition from 1997 listed on your author profile page - this one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23.... If you take a look at the upper right corner, you'll find the other two editions.

I hope that answers your question :)

Janecka, thanks for taking the time to help me on a Sunday. :-) Since that original mass market paperback edition of First Degree Burn is out of print and the ONLY edition available (except from collectors) is the new edition, is there anyway I can make the new edition my PRIMARY edition?

Yes. Go to edition you wish to make primary. "Edit details" and midway down righthand column you can set as primary. (http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/31... ).

Goodreads cache can be slow to catch up, particularly on search results and displaying thumbnails.

Peter Lance | 12 comments Debbie, thanks so much. Just did it. NOW MY FINAL QUEST OF THE DAY IS REMOVING the edition SIX SIX SIX from my list of books since it was NEVER PUBLISHED.

Just so you know that I do use HELP menus :-) I found this link:

http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2-...

But when I go to MY BOOKS on my profile page suddenly there are no books listed underneath it, so I'm baffled about how to remove SIX SIX SIX -- the edition that never was. :-)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments You can add a plain text, simple statement in the description of Six six six that that edition is not available and direct potential readers to click "other editions" or to another edition on goodreads (no links outside of goodreads or reviews go in a book description but okay to link to correct book page on goodreads — http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/32... )

That link is talking about books you as a goodreads member personally shelved (likely as read, currently reading, etc.) — not about removing books from your author dashboard or the goodreads database.

The link about removing books is this one: http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/22... and even though not published it was assigned a valid isbn -- unlikely to be removed unless goodreads staff gives permission for the removal. I'd contact staff at support@goodreads.com or use contact form under help screen.

Moving isbn numbers and deleting books with valid isbn numbers, against librarian policies and can get librarian status revoked.

Gray area since not published, but still best to get staff to weigh in (mostly not working on weekends so not going to get an answer until at least Monday unless someone randomly checks in).

Peter Lance | 12 comments O.K. Thanks. So is there a way to remove SIX SIX SIX, A BOOK THAT WAS NEVER PUBLISHED... but contains the same ISBN as the book that is about to be published DEAL WITH THE DEVIL so I can eliminate the confusion and move forward solely with this title? Keep in mind that SIX SIX SIX is not an "edition" it existed only on a pre-order page on amazon.com

message 14: by Peter (new)

Peter Lance | 12 comments In return for your help and Janeka's I will send each of you signed first editions of DEAL WITH THE DEVIL if you email me your mailing addresses at pl@peterlance.com

message 15: by Peter (new)

Peter Lance | 12 comments Debbie, great. Many thanks. P.L.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments I was editing my post (issues posting today) as you were posting Peter, sorry for any confusion. It's just best to ask staff when back on duty; be prepared as not usual policy to remove books but staff have final word.

Plus anything to do with giveaways, staff handles vs. librarians working on database.

message 17: by Peter (new)

Peter Lance | 12 comments Debbie, thanks I really appreciated your help today. I just sent off a detailed email explaining the problem to support@goodreads.com If you send me your email address via pl@peterlance.com I'll send you the ebook of DEAL when it comes out 7.2.13 and if you live in the states I will also send you a signed first edition of the hardcover for being so helpful.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments No thank you on the book (not a thriller, crime or mystery reader usually and I have a staggering to be read pile). A signed copy might be good idea for you to put in a goodreads giveaway.

message 19: by Peter (new)

Peter Lance | 12 comments Debbie, Yes, that's how this started. I offered to give ten (10) copies away via Giveaway but when I tried to do that the page defaulted to SIX SIX SIX. So I'm endeavoring to clear this up, not just to remove this old title but to move forward on GOODREADS with the actual book to be published DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

Peter Lance | 12 comments I just fixed the problem thanks to the advice of a fellow author A.J. McDonald. My thanks to everyone who took the time to help me today. Best, P.L.

message 21: by Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) (last edited Jun 24, 2013 06:05AM) (new)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments If that advice overwrote or moved titles, covers, or isbn etc. on existing book (effectively deleting it), the changes might get revoked if not approved by staff. I can no longer find "six six six" when searching. And does not show as original title on combined editions. ( Not a librarian so cannot see the changelogs to see how the" six, six, six" book was removed). The new title editions do seem to all show isbn numbers which is odd if the never published book had been using same isbn.

message 22: by Renske (new)

Renske | 12228 comments But the author says it was never published with the old title (or I'm missing some information?), so why should a pre-publication change of the title be different from a pre-publication change of the cover?

message 23: by Deon (new)

Deon (deonva) | 3718 comments The book in question has been renamed from SIX, SIX, SIX
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24...

message 4 says it was never published, I believe this is acceptable.

message 24: by Monique (new)

Monique (kadiya) | 1097 comments The difference is that it was actually offered as a pre-order at one time with the original title including the Six, Six, Six. I am inclined to agree that the pre-publication change in title is equivalent to the pre-publication change in cover *in this instance*. It wouldn't hurt to have a note that the Six, Six, Six title was the original title, imo.

I'm sure, since an email was sent to Help that this will be handled by GoodReads employees.

What if the information is wrong and you cannot add the book because of the ISBN?

You can always start a new thread for the book and ask a librarian to look into the problem. (Please do start a new thread for a new book; it makes keeping track of what's been done much easier.)

message 27: by Lynne (new)

Lynne King I'm getting somewhat confused with all of these threads.

How do I have a book added to the Goodreads database?
