ASP | 61 comments My "to-be-read" list/pile grows dangerously and, working as self-employed, the time for reading is limited. So the only solution is to read more... how do you manage to read more books within the year?

message 2: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 48 comments I struggle with the same thing! I have found that if I always take a book with me, then I can snatch minutes here and there (like waiting at the dr's office, waiting for the kids to get out of school, when I take the kids to the park.) most days I don't get those extra minutes though, so I have committed to reading just one hour at night before bed (which is really hard for me because I don't want to stop after an hour. My husband has had to turn the light off on me to get me to stop sometimes!) and a half h9our during my lunch break. That has worked for me.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) I'm the same, I always have a book with me and always start and finish the day by reading at least a few pages :)

message 4: by ASP (new)

ASP | 61 comments Thank you Heidi and Rick.
I also tend to postpone my reading until I go to bed but most evenings my eyes close before I finish the 5th page :(
May be should we be kinder to ourselves and offer us a few minutes here and there during the day?

message 5: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 363 comments I am lucky in the summer in that work slows down and I am able to read some there (I have to be there if someone comes in or the phone rings but once my work is done I can read) so summertime I usually read more.
Like you Heidi I also take books with me to appointments, or anytime I have to wait.

I'm not much of a TV watcher so I usually read when my family watches TV in the evenings. I'm still with them so if they have a comment or want to talk to me I am there. It works for us.

Thank you Melissa - same as you I try to read while daughter and husband watch TV but I find it hard to concentrate! I'll try tonight :)

Joei Hossack | 50 comments I would hate for anything to become an obsession. I read in between writing, lecturing, teaching, housework, cooking and socializing. They are ALL important in my life and I enjoy spending time doing it all.

Terri | 13 comments I stay up REALLY late at night.

Alberta Ross (authorshow4506833alberta_ross) | 4 comments I am very lucky in that when I learnt to read I seemed to have taught myself speed reading - so books are devoured:)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I'm in the boat where I need to now make myself read at a different time to get into a new habit. I've always read at night before bed, but now with working early mornings again I have to stop myself. It's too hard for me to put a book down and lose track of time reading before bed, and sometimes it makes me hyper if the book is particularly good, which makes it harder to fall asleep.

Soooo I keep meaning to make myself start reading a bit in between (about an hour after work), but I seem to keep forgetting to do this so my reading lately has been severely reduced and I miss it.

message 11: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi ASP, since I always have a book with me I do squeeze in 10-15 minutes at odd times during the day.

I like to sneak out of my office for a coffee at a cafe and read then - its my stress break from work :)

I like to take a book with me to the doctor/dentist appointments they seem to see me sooner.

Hi Terri... thank you but then don't you collapse after some time because of your lack of sleep? :)

Alberta I envy this skill you have... I think that would be the best solution for me! Thank you

Yes thank you I'm sure that helps!

Hi Erin,
For different reasons I have the same problem as you: I don't manage to read much before sleeping (tiredness + moaning husband) and just like you I promised myself a treat, half an hour or so of reading to relax before supper... but that moment of the day is also the time when I realize how much left there is to do...
Hey how about setting this as a mid-year resolution !?

Thank you - that's a good point - seeing it all in a positive way :)

Yes, we should completely do this! Procrastination is sort of my middle name but I usually accomplish things eventually :)

message 19: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessbr) I don't even know. When I'm in that mood, nothing can stop me

message 20: by Jasdeep (new)

Jasdeep | 1 comments I try to read a bit everyday or else I feel like my day isn't complete. I usually try and read before bed but that usually ends up me reading for 2+ hours and me being tired the next morning!

message 21: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) It's 100 degrees here. I'm inside reading.

message 22: by Marylene (new)

Marylene | 26 comments I try to read a bit every night before bed unless it's too late. I take my nook or book to restaurants, when I pick up my boyfriend from work at 2:15am most nights, when I pick up the boyfriend's daughter from work, to work in case I have time at lunch time, to the movies in case I have time before the movie starts...pretty much I just read when I can. I also spend time at Barnes & Nobles to read without worrying about the TV or the computer. I still don't have a lot of time to read, but every bit helps!

message 23: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Farrow As much free time I can get because of hours at work is starting to go up.

message 24: by Louise (new)

Louise | 280 comments Audiobooks help me get to more of the titles I want to read, because I can listen while driving or cleaning.

I also tend to read in my coffee break at work, or for an hour or so in the afternoon/evening

message 25: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore | 510 comments Usually, I sacrifice sleep in order to get some reading done. I haven't done it in years, but in the past I'd take a random day off from work when I could and just read.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I ALWAYS carry a book with me in my shoulder bag. That allows me to read whenever I have a free minute. It happens a lot more than you'd think, and I have made a lot of progress this way! :)

message 27: by Taylor (new)

Taylor When I'm at home, most of my time is spent reading. Not being a TV watcher helps. I've become quite adept at reading while watering the garden or shaving my legs. And sometimes, when things are slow at work, I'll go for tea and read a work related book.

message 28: by Mai (new)

Mai | 1 comments I read book at any chance that I get. Also, If I know that I will be using public transport I will make sure that I take my book with me and I try to read before I go to sleep. If I know I got stuff to do during the day, I won't read a book because I know that once I start I will find it hard to stop.

message 29: by Joshie (new)

Joshie (jgabcdefg) My commute time back and forth is 5 hrs and I work for 10 hrs. That leaves me 9 hrs at home during weekdays and I try to read before going to sleep. But then, I binge-read during the weekends and when I'm at home I mostly read. I kind of envy those people who can read in public transport though, it makes me dizzy.

Anne Strauss (annemccarthystrauss) | 9 comments About your commute - is that 5 hours each way?? I had a commute of 2+ hours each way, and it was unbearable. But I did meet my husband on the train!

It's 2.5 each way. And that's really nice -- about you and your husband's story! I agree, it is really unbearable but I don't even want to transfer nearer my workplace. It's polluted, houses are too near each other, it floods easily and very... noisy. I am just glad I can still find time to read!

message 32: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 24 comments I always have a book with me; no matter what I'm doing. I tend to read my book on my lunch breaks or if it's a slow day at work. I work 2 jobs; so Sunday's are pretty much always spent reading! Like most of y'all, I find my TBR shelf, and my bookshelves at home, to be overflowing with no end in sight. Too many books; so little time! :)

message 33: by Anne (new)

Anne Strauss (annemccarthystrauss) | 9 comments I haven't figured it out. I don't read nearly as much as I'd like to.

message 34: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (herbtiff) That was part of the reason that I love to travel/fly. I like to read on the flight and it is pretty much uninterrupted time.
