@Zarnab- it's attitude, not tashan, which you rarely find in our poets. All they do is whine about "hijr" or talk about the supernatural beauty of their beloved :-P

Galib was a legend, no doubt about that, but to say they he was above all, for me its not fair, its extremly difficult to compare one legend poet with another.Legends were unique in their own way.

@Faheem agreed... also saying that indian poets just wtite about love and loss is wrong... remember keats and others romantic poets... romance is the most common.. and yes indian poets do feel deeply than others

Nai:P i personaly feel urdu literature variety mein itna rich nai jitna English literature hai.Romance is their just one aspect not the whole.Maybe bcz they've seen more worst time than us.World wars,im talking about.

I believe that english poetry has a larger varoety of genres. And it quite old as well, going back to thomas waytt and chaucer perhaps , or even ancient. And as far as urdu goes, ghalib and meer were probably the most renowned ancient poets are just over two hundred years old. Urdu poetry is probably just too young.

@Faheem- No two things are similar, still we compare them. Mir was a legend. But if you ask any scholar of Urdu, the two greatest names in Urdu poetry before partition are Ghalib and Iqbal. And most people vote for Ghalib :-P He's the one of the earliest and probably the only pre partition poet to be translated in English and the most quoted, and popular one as well. As for as his genius is concerned, you are probably aware that inspite of the fact that he's famous for his poetry, the foundation of whole Urdu prose is based on his letters. They have as much significance in Urdu literature as his poetry.

@Abu bakr obviously urdu isnt that old... urdu became a somewhat known language after mughals... but ghalib, meer and iqbal arent the only poets... there are several several other poets who have been translated

@Shehzad ghalib doesnt have a course after him whereas Iqbaliyat is a phd in its ownself and not only in Pakistan :-P

@Abubakar- Well, Urdu poetry has every genre English does but English doesn't have our Ghazal. And I think Urdu poetry is richer than English, way richer actually. Urdu poetry starts in 12 century with Amir Khusruo. That makes it older than even English language :-P and the subjects you find I'm Urdu poetry are hardly even touched in English. As we were discussing, where in English do you find such elaborate praisings that often border on blasphemy :-P

Iqbaliyat is an extremely interesting subject... it has till now more than 500 PhDs i think world over :-P

@Sohaib- Well that's a thing of honor for us no doubt. It is in Iran i think? I'm not gonna say anything about Iqbal's poetry cuz as a nation we never tire of exploiting his message to our cause. You might've read that funny essay by Patras on this very thing.

@Sohaib- The English romantic poets weren't romantic in the sense our poets are. Their romance meant to be closer to nature. Our romantic poetry is ghazal. Ghazal literally means "talk of and about women" :-P there you have romantic Urdu poetry in a gist.

@Sohaib- Punjab univ? I have seen the kind of PhD work they do. The researcher talks more about the poet than his poetry. At the end, it seems more like a biography than thesis haha

I gave my personal views on the matter at hand, I know i lot of urdu Scholars n other people spend so much time comparing poets with each other n selecting which is "the best" or something like that.

For me that's total waste of time,*Suppose If some1 visits a bar full of amazing collection of wines each unique in its own way. Instead of wasting time on comparing different wines, He should spend on more time on relishing on each n every on them. :)

do set a criteria for the entry into that wine collection but don't waste time on comparing wines of that epic collection. As each one provides with you with a unique experience never felt before. This is what i learn from my little experience of poetry. :)

*also suppose it is afterlife or pre-christ era :)

SOrry, i know it isn't appropriate allegory, i couldn't think of any thing more diverse quickly, n given its references in Shyari , i decided to go for it.

As for that poet here is another Gazal. :)

butaan-e-maahavash ujari hui manzil me.n rahate hai.n
ke jis ke jaan jaati hai usi ke dil me.n rahate hai.n

hazaaron hasaratian vo hain ki roke se nahi rukati.n
