Brenda Seaberg (cricketseaberg) | 241 comments Beta reading "Until I Die Again" for review for Gary Caruso. It is the sequel to Our Souls to Keep, which was an excellent book. I only have the 1st 9 chapters or so right now, but this one is definitely following suit. It's really keeping my attention.

Now I'm reading The Bottoms. I've been looking forward to this one.

message 1019: by Panisoara (new)

Panisoara (OPanisoara) | 2 comments The seven medals of success presents the adventures of two children who win, one by one, the medals of courage, cooperation, curiosity, patience, creativity, perseverance and empathy. In their journey they are accompanied by Memo, the dwarf of their memory; he reminds them certain events in their life and they learn the rules of each psychological characteristic.
The book contains stories for children about developing personal success skills and it is based on psychological and pedagogical studies. Every chapter of the book has a Parent's Corner, with a short description of the psychological concepts and exercises for developing each personal trait. Also, every chapter includes a poem because psycho-pedagogical studies demonstrate children learn easier by combining the linguistic and the „musical” intelligence.
We, the authors are university researchers and professors: G. Panisoara has a Ph.D. in Psychology and I.O. Panisoara has a Ph.D. in Educational Sciences.
The patience poem (fragment from the ebook)
Do you know Trici – the caterpillar?
She cried: her beauty was no thriller
But time marched on, as it went by
She turned to a fine butterfly
Here is why:
You want time to pass by quicker,
“I want to play now,” you dicker,
You want to grow up much faster.
But patience is what you must master.
If you have patience you will learn
To calm yourself and wait your turn
Step by step you will succeed
Patience is the thing you need.

I liked it. It was definitely better than Doctor Sleep but I don't think it was as good as Joyland.

I'm happy to hear that.:) I really liked Joyland a lot, too, and while there was a lot that I loved about Dr. Sleep, I found it sadly lacking in creatively and King's typical character development.

message 1022: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC For me, Doctor Sleep didn't even come anywhere even remotely close to living up to the hype.

I haven't tried to read Doctor Sleep. I didn't think it would live up to the hype from the beginning.

Think I'm going to start Born To Bleed: A Thriller

Rachel the Book Harlot | 63 comments I just finished The Turtle Boy The Turtle Boy (Timmy Quinn #1) by Kealan Patrick Burke which I thought was kind of...terrible. If this is a sample of Mr. Burke's writing style, then I think he and I will have to go our separate ways.

Now I have no idea what I want to read next.

message 1025: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic I am currently reading A Storm of Swords, the third installment of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice seven-book series.

Since the final two books have not yet been published and each book is very long - ranging from 800 to 1,000-plus pages, it will, no doubt, take me a very long time to finish the series.

Rachel,

Having watched the television adaptation on HBO, I was reluctant to read the books, thinking it would be redundant. However, there are enough subtle changes in the TV version to allow one to enjoy both.

I am enjoying the books as much as I did the TV version; and I liked that a lot. I just hope that future episodes and books are as good.

Rachael,

I checked out your Goodreads profile to determine what types of books you enjoyed.

I believe The Inverted World by Christopher Priest fits the description of the types of stories you prefer. First published in 1974, the story is timeless.

Imagine a city, called Earth by its inhabitants, being steadily winched forward on tracks picked up and laid anew every day, for if it were to stand still it would be swept away in the constant southward movement of the land itself.

Rachel the Book Harlot | 63 comments @Jim: I'm glad you're enjoying the books. And I agree that the books and show are different enough that they can each be enjoyed on their own merits.

As to the book series, Storm of Swords and Book 1 GOT were my favorite. I did have a hard time with Book 5 Dance of Dragons. I thought it could have been edited down quite a bit. However, I'm really looking forward to Book 6.

On another note, thank you so much for the recommendation of The Inverted World. It was kind of you to check my profile to see that it would match my interests. The book is definitely right up my alley, so on my TBR it goes. :)

@ Chuck, thanks! I was actually quite surprised as well since I've heard great things about the author's work. A friend of mine convinced me to give him another shot. She rec'd the book Kin so we'll see how that goes.

I am also surprised, as Burke comes highly recommended by many around here. I'm sorry you had a negative experience with it. Hopefully Kin treats you better.:)

I'm also intrigued by The Inverted World. Thank you, Jim. I'm glad you're enjoying ASOIAF.

Bridget's Quiet Corner (chaptersandscreens) Now Reading: Beach Blondes June Dreams, July's Promise, August Magic (Summer, #1-3) by Katherine Applegate by Katherine Applegate

A huge, intimidating book (721 Pages)! I put off reading this book for a while because of how big it was...Im only 66 pages in, but so far, so good...I hope I can get through the whole book...Even if I have to take breaks between each "Month" (June, July, August)...If I get through this one, I may buy Tan Lines, which also seems to be equally as big, but the 3rd book isnt quite as big from what I saw. :-)

message 1049: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Cheney I'm currently reading I Never Promised You A Rose Garden by Joanne Greenburg. I'm only a couple chapters but it's a good book so far and I think it'll be a quick read. For a book that was written in 1966 it doesn't seem like it is. The writing seems very modern.
