Dustin I enjoyed Ender's Game a lot, too!

Sharon- I haven't read The Passage since it first came out, and have been interested in The Twelve for quite awhile. I'm hoping to re-read the former and proceed with the 2nd book sometime this summer. I am kind of bummed that Amy is put on the sidelines a bit, though...

This does seem like it could become my favorite genre. Didn't expect them to be so heartfelt and relatable. I'm sure they are all different but I am a little less skeptical about it.

Yeah, they're not all like that. You might try I Am Legend though. It's pretty short and it's definitely one of the best of this type.

Ice Bear (neilar) Dustin wrote: "I enjoyed Ender's Game a lot, too!"

Ender's Game is great but being spoilt by the prequels and some of the sequels - although I enjoyed Speaker for the Dead.

message 60: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I'll be re-reading Ender's Game sometime, and the 2nd book, Speaker for the Dead has been added to my "to-read" shelf.

message 61: by Jane (new)

Jane Doe I just read this book and thought it was a great addition to the story line. Beware it has spoilers for folks that haven't read it. I loved hearing about how other people perceived the story.

message 63: by Tim (new)

Tim Harlan If you like dystopian books read Brave New Worlds. It is a collection of short stories.

message 64: by Patrick (new)

Patrick (patn76) | 60 comments Reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy which many people compare The Dog Stars to. I see minimal similarities so far but I'm only 32 pages into it.

message 65: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments The Road is on my TBR list. I need to get a copy of that one.

message 66: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson I just got The Road myself. I heard it was a difficult read due to lack of communication. Is this true?

message 67: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Janie.

I read the road and found it really easy to read

Dustin Tim wrote: "If you like dystopian books read Brave New Worlds. It is a collection of short stories."

I really want to read Brave New World!!

Dustin Janie wrote: "I just got The Road myself. I heard it was a difficult read due to lack of communication. Is this true?"

I love The Road, and McCarthy's work is amazing, IMO. As for your question, it is a fairly simple and straight forward novel, it's just very, VERY bleak! I kid you not, just about every page has the word 'black' or some variation thereof, at least once!

message 70: by Patrick (new)

Patrick (patn76) | 60 comments Really enjoyingThe Road. I don't find it that difficult to read but the author doesn't use quotation marks and there are a lot terms unfamiliar to me. I just keep my dictionary app open. I don't think everyone will have this problem. After the first couple of pages, I got used to the author's style and was really drawn into the story.

GeneralTHC Patrick wrote: "Reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy which many people compare The Dog Stars to. I see minimal similarities so far but I'm only 32 pages into it. "

I've read them both. They're both post-apocalyptic fiction, so they'll have a lot of those elements in common.

message 72: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I think Tim is referring to a short story Dustin. Do you have Brave New World?

message 73: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 40 comments I love dystopian stories! Some of my favourites are Blindness, The Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, Oryx and Crake (although this one's arguably more post-apocalyptic, as are The Stand and Swang Song, two of my all-time favourite books)

message 74: by Anthea (new)

Anthea | 19 comments I loved, loved, loved The Road. It's grim, but beautifully written. I read it 2 years ago and I still think about it.

I've been hearing the same calling Adam. I picked up Pillars of the Earth a few months ago, and everyone I know, who've read it, have loved it. I was told that in spite of it's size, it's a great read.

We should definitely read it soon. I like grand epic reads. It has a sequel, too, which is even longer.

I could agree more, Pillars is indeed amazing! I'm not fond of Follet's writing, but looking beyond that, it's fantastic! I haven't read the sequel (yet,) but I will someday. Enjoy it, guys and gals!

message 96: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I noticed on Audible that Alas, Babylon is one of the Customer Favorites, so I downloaded it. I'm definitely a fan of that stuff. The scenario I believe is nuclear war, which reminded me of SWAN SONG. But I just realized it was written in 1959. This led me to think about a couple of things(lookout!). I don't believe kids today fear nuclear war as they did back when I was growing up in the late 70s and 80s. I think that was one reason why SWAN SONG probably kicked so much ass: nuclear war was a real possibility. I remember people used to talk about it almost as if it were a forgone conclusion. I imagine when this book was written people were seriously freaking. Anyway, I just hope it doesn't feel too dated. I AM LEGEND is even older than that and think it's still probably one the very best.

I'm sure you will do fine. The dialog isn't that hard to follow. I did find myself rereading but its worth it. But yeah, I've been done for a while. Really liked the book as a whole. Enjoy!
