I LOVE Classics! Haven't read any for a while, but I really believe they are great exercise for the mind.

message 2: by J.R. (new)

J.R. I'm looking to read some Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Vern would be nice.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I want to read A Journey To The Center Of The Earth (Troll Illustrated Classics) by Jules Verne J.R.

message 4: by Nishtha (new)

Nishtha Jindal (nishthajindal) Classics! Ah, my favourite! Sidney Sheldon, Nicholas Coleridge and many more!

message 5: by Sam (new)

Sam Arnold (samharnold) Huxley is my favourite love Brave New World

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Will need to check, but I believe Brave New World is on my to-read list.

message 7: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shazzacatzz) | 45 comments JR I haven't read either for quite a few years, but I really should again. They were fabulous adventures! probably my all time favourite classics are Jane Eyre and Great Expectations, possibly because I read both in my teens and I was a romantic little soul in those days!

message 8: by Rick (new)

Rick Shepard I have never read Brave New World, it's supposed to be fantastic. I think the ones I've really enjoyed, that I've read over the last couple years would be Ulysses (mostly because of the time/effort I vested in it), Pride and Prejudice, and Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. I thought Angle of Repose was a fantastic book about the forming of the American west, and I guess what you'd call the human condition.

Angle of Repose sounds interesting Rick.

message 10: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I love the Classics, too, Cindy! I just started The Catcher in the Rye yesterday, in fact. Have you read it?

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

It's on my to-read list. Will get to it one day :(

It's funny, that was one of the only contemporary classics i read in High school! I am not sure developing minds shold be exposed to it! lol...I did just read Anial Farm, Farenhight 451?, and 1984. I am told the scarlet letter and tale of two cities ar worth checking out, any input. Tale of two cities seems like a massive investment in time if it sucks!

It's worth it Jett ... It's a long time since I last read it and I will confess that I have never read a Dickens yet that I didn't enjoy, he was a great yarn spinner! I read The Scarlet letter in my teens and can't remember much about how I felt it apart from the fact that I must not have hated it!

I really enjoy The Scarlet Letter, and Dickens is worthy of anyone's time, IMO.

message 16: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Classics rock! I'm definitely going to be reading more of them. It's hard to be on top of even a single genre now with all the books coming out and it really stinks having to read a lot of bad books to get a good one. I really think the tried-and-true is where it's at. Especially for a person that doesn't have a lot of time.

That reminds me - I need to add all my Dickens books to my GR library. A few years ago I was in a little opshop in a country town and found the entire Dickens collection in hardback - perfect condition! I think I paid under $10 for the whole lot! Possibly the best book bargain I've ever found... now I just need to read them!

Wow! What a deal Michelle. Doesn't get any better than that. I like yard sales a lot. Have found some pretty good books really cheap.

Wow, really? Dickens entire collection in HC, Michelle!? That is amazing, what a heavenly book haul! I must admit, I'm a bit jealous right now..

message 21: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson Wow Michelle, how awesome is that?

message 22: by Dustin (new)

Dustin And they're all in mint condition, as well?? I am blown away!!

message 23: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) lol Dustin! I couldn't believe my luck! Along with the Dickens books I also got a hardcover series (matching covers/spines) of Tolstoy, Plato, Oscar Wilde and some other classics that I can't think of off the top of my head... about 20 books in total, and again all in mint condition. I need to add them all to my GR library - might add that to my list of things to do on the weekend!

They don't have maroon covers with gold filigree work on the spines by any chance Michelle? Dad had a set of the complete works of Dickens plus other classics that were put out by Doubleday Book Club in the 70s. I stole my copy of The Hobbit, Tarka the Otter and Brave New World from that set. When he and mum downsized, many of his books got sold and given away, including most of the classics, but you'll pry that set of Dickens out of his cold dead hands literally!

message 25: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) Lol Sharon!

They sound very similar... all the Dickens books are dark green, the Tolstoy, Plato etc are yellow and the Oscar Wilde etc are maroon and I think I have some that are brown - all with gold filigree. When I get home tonight I'll have a look to see where they came from :)

Wow, that is a truly amazing find, Michelle!! You must be very proud!

message 27: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) Okay - for anyone interested I've had a look and this is what I got on my best book haul ever lol!

All by Heron Books...

Blue hardcovers - 3 volume Tolstoy, War & Peace
Brown hardcovers - Bacon, Plato and 2x Nietzsche
Maroon hardcovers - 3 volume Complete Works of Oscar Wilde
Cream/yellow hardcovers - 5 volume Poets of the English Language
Green spine/yellow covers - Voltaire, Boswell, Kafka, Chekhov,Cellini
Green hardcovers - 32 volumes Complete Works of Charles Dickens

Now to add them all to my GR library!

message 34: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Speaking of the Classics, I finished The Catcher in the Rye a couple days ago, and really liked it a lot. I haven't written a review yet, but I definitely will be posting one.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I have that one on my to-read list Dustin. Glad to hear you liked it.

message 36: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Cool. I was just about to read THE CATCHER IN THE RYE tonight.

message 37: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Thank you, Cindy. I hope you like it, Chuck.

message 38: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 79 comments As an English major I've read so many classics of different genres I'm not sure I can even remember them all. I don't know that I could pick one as a favorite though.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

The Old Man and the Sea is my all-time favorite.

message 40: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) I'm thinking about reading some Dickens soon- any recommendations? :)

message 41: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC Michelle wrote: "I'm thinking about reading some Dickens soon- any recommendations? :)"

I would read A TALE OF TWO CITIES.

If you're up for a particularly challenging and profound Dickens read, I'd give Bleak House a go, Michelle.:)

message 43: by Sharon (last edited Jul 07, 2013 05:13AM) (new)

Sharon (shazzacatzz) | 45 comments Great Expectations was my favourite Michelle, closely followed by Oliver Twist

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Oliver Twist. Yes!

message 45: by Patrick (new)

Patrick (patn76) | 60 comments Picked up some classics at a local library's "used bookstore" for 25 cents each. Just read The Turn of the Screw and just started Lord of the Flies.

message 46: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I love my classics! Mostly plays though (recently read Hamlet), and currently reading Les Mis!

message 47: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm reading The Green Mile at the moment then I might read A Game of Thrones so it could be a little while until I get around to it... but you never know... I do tend to get sidetracked :)

What did you think? I gave it go once, but it started out so slow. I hear it's really good, though. I keep meaning to get back to it. I love classic horror.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Tony, I may attempt The Iliad & The Odyssey again one day, but I was forced to read it in school and that kind of ruined it for me. At least for a while.
