Throughout the book we view various problems in different relationships between people, and we see how these issues develop. However, in Ruth and Simon's flawed relationship (to say the least), the problem isn't really resolved. Not only that you don't even address the problem in the book. Why is that?

Again all of the characters in your book are very different and there are a lot of them. Do connect or see yourself in each character? If yes in which do you see yourself the least/most? BTW Big Potterhead and I really enjoyed The Casual Vacancy
Having shared the joy of reading the HP series with my oldest grandson and my daughter, and then my son and his children, as well as with many adult friends , I was looking forward to this new direction. What would you say to someone like me who tried to read CV and just could not get past the initial pages? I was too overwhelmed trying to make sense of the numerous disparate characters.
Reading the wonderful questions and comments here tells me I am missing something powerful, but I am not sure how to manage to deal with the bewilderment that CV engendered in me. 7/4/13 I just reviewed my post and saw a rating of 5 stars. As I have read only a small portion of CV, I did not place ANY rating. Does anyone know how this could occur?
Why would you chose to write such a grim book that contains within in not a single moment of joy? Given that an author has to spend a long time in the world of their creation, did you not find this grimness dragging at you in your daily life? Unless your daily life is one of continuous joy, it must have been tough going.
Why have you chosen to write a crime story book for adults? Why not something closer to urban fantasy or just fantasy?
We all have a favourite actor that we love to death because of the predictability of the roles he/she will play. I'm talking about typecasting, where an actor may excel at doing something totally different but the audience would struggle to see him in a new light.Did you for a second worry that the same may happen to you? Did you perhaps even consider publishing it under a pseudonym?
Thank you
Tim
If "The Casual Vacancy" was to be a movie, who do you think are most suited to act the role of the mothers in the story?
How do you feel you managed the hopes of the Harry Potter fans and was it hard for you to live up to the expectations of these fans? :)
You are an excellent story teller, but what prompted you to write a book that is more a portrait of characters than a story? I feel like this didn't live up to our capabilities.
Why did you write this book? What did you enjoy the most by writing it?
Did it feel weard not writing about Harry?
Do you miss Harry Potter?
How conscious a decision was it to write a far more adult book than Harry Potter, and how difficult was the transition? Was there anything from the HP series - an idea you wanted to explore but couldn't, perhaps, or characters/settings/themes - that you put into The Casual Vacancy?
Why have you chosen to write a book that's so different then Harry Potter? What did you enjoy the most? Writing the Harry Potte series or writing the 'Casual Vacancy'?
After writing the Harry Potter series, what inspired you to write this book seeing as they are completely different? Is there any connection between the two?
How would you respond to the idea that 'The Casual Vacancy' is the books for the generation that grew up with Harry Potter - now grown up and either adults or on the brink of adulthood?
Harry Potter was such a great success. The writing, the story and the characters were great. Why try an adult or children novel when you are so good at young adult genre? will you write in this genre again?
While writing this book, did you have the thought that it may not go down as well as your other novels, due to the fact that it wasn't Harry Potter?
Was the departure from the world of magic and Harry something that you had planned from before or was it an inspiration struck kind of moment that you felt you had to follow? And as Harry and his world, I imagine, are always in your mind how difficult is it to tune it out in a way and write non-fiction situations and problems, and have you had the urge to give magical solutions to your characters in The Casual Vacancy?
There are two qualities I love about your writing, your humour and your creativity. Was there a time during the writing of A Casual Vacancy when these qualities got in the way or sidetracked your project?
If things had gone just slightly differently, how would you envision Krystal's future, her adulthood?
Is the plot of Casual Vacancy developed during your time working for Amnesty International? I really feel like it is inspired by your experience there.
The idea for "Harry Potter" came to you when you were riding the train. You said you wanted to write a story for adults, so was it because you experienced something similar when writing "The Casual Vacancy" where the story just came to you, or were you consciously thinking of writing something like this?
Which character(s) did you feel closest to while writing the novel, and, were they to have been born of magical blood and accepted into Hogwarts, which house do you think they would have been sorted into?
Was it hard to say goodbye to Harry Potter and start a whole different book? Is there any connection between the two?
I love you and thank you for writing such amazing books!
I love you and thank you for writing such amazing books!
J.K. Rowling can you tell me what was as a writer the most difficult, uneasy and challenging part, chapter or dialogue to wrote and why? And what was the most difficult, uneasy and challenging part, chapter or dialogue to wrote and why as a woman and mother?thanks you so much
Fernanda
Hi JK Rowling. Before i ask my question, i want you to know that you are an inspiration to everyone ever since you wrote Harry Potter. i am a huge fan of your work. Anyway the question i want to ask is how did you get the information about forensic science and how did you manage to create the aspect of the forensic world? it must have been hard to raise a child like Krystal and you raise your child Jessica, how did you feel about Krystal and was it hard to create Krystal's past?
Lori wrote: "I love your books - you ability to tell a story with tremendous detail and keep the reader's full attention is astounding. What on Earth were you thinking? Writing for an adult audience should hav..."I haven't read it yet because I can't get over my view of JK Rowling as the author of fantasy and wonder. I am curious if this may have been the reason you didn't enjoy it, and if it had been published under a different name with no expectations attached to it, would you still have hated it?
first - Is "The Casual Vacancy" a kind of... substitute?second - YOU are the strongest power we have... and it's not a question. We love you =)
After writing children's ost loved series, why did you directly decide to shift to a darker side and write about rape, sexual assault and suicide?
I read "The Casual Vacancy" and found it very different to "Harry Potter". Did you enjoy writing that genre? Did it feel weird because you spent atleast 10 years writing the Harry Potter series?
The first time when you wrote that book, did you considerate, it will be one of phenomenal book of this century?
Dear Joanne, for me "The Casual Vacancy" was very reflective and thrilling! One of the best reading of 2012! Which is the most important message that you want to send to all your readers ?
(My childhood was amazing thanks to you and Harry! You'll be forever in my heart!)
Hi Jo :) This is going to be a pretty straight forward question but one I would love to know the answer to. If you met Krystal in real life, what advice would you give her about the choices she's making and should make in the future?
Thanks :)
The language in The Casual Vacancy is very different from the Harry Potter series, obviously because it is for adults and not children. What made you want to write for adults and not children? Did it help you get closure after the end of the Potter series? Also whats the significance with the name Barry? Its very similar to Harry, did it make you feel you were still writing the Potter books even though you weren't?
After finishing Harry Potter series you were able not to work for the rest of your life, you could quit writing and do whatever you want to. But you decided to write another one and the one for more adult readers. Do you want to prove yourself as the not one-book-author?
Wasn't it scary?
Because people all over the world admit the genius of Potter books, and the fail isn't a nice thing to deal with, unless you don't care of the negative opinions?
How do you react to media accusing you in clumsiness of Casual Vacancy?
I'm sorry I don't want to offend you, I'm just a beginning writer and these questions are essential to me. And sorry for my English :)
Thank you.
