Josie (maid_marian) | 126 comments This series is GREAT. Not my usual cup of tea (what with zombie-like creatures and necromancers), but really inventive and original and exciting! Anyone else read them? Sabriel, Lirael Daughter of the Clayr, Abhorsen in that order...

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Josie... Thank you for starting this thread! I just ordered Sabriel from PBS last night. I love zombies (is that demented or what?) so when I heard that this series was about the dead being raised, I put it on my TBR list, and when I found a copy, I jumped all over it!

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Scratch that... I just ordered the 2nd and 3rd book from PBS as well. :D

Probably... It's like they are ordering themselves!! ;)

message 5: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) DANG! These look good, I want them.

Allison (inconceivably) *has temper tantrum*

stupid library has like 15 books by him, but not these.

His other main series looks kinda...not so good.

Don't they??

message 8: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) well, just FYI...you can get all three at betterworldbooks.com for $11 :P I can't do it though, I already have a shipment headed this way it would be silly. My hubby would kill me.

(I'll just check the used book store so I can pay cash and he won't know)

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I got them from PBS free. The only thing is that they are all being shipped by different sellers... I'll probably get 3 then 1 then 2. LOL

message 10: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) lol yeah.

not like you don't have a ton of other stuff to read anyway :P

message 11: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) ...oh wait, I should take my own advice! hehe.

But these have ZOMBIES! (Did I mention I love zombie books?)

JG (Introverted Reader) I found a short story written by this guy in an anthology I picked up. I liked it so much that I added Sabriel to my tbr. I'm glad to hear someone recommend it.

message 14: by Jean (new)

Jean | 17 comments I think I have read most of what he's written - I started with Sabriel etc, and liked them so much I went on to read other things he wrote. I've enjoyed the Keys of Time, but it's not as good as the Sabriel trilogy in my opinion.

message 15: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I am reading Sabriel right now, can't believe how good it is!!

message 16: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) ...finished it. SO GOOD. One of my favorite books ever.

Everybody go read it. ;)

message 17: by Josie (new)

Josie (maid_marian) | 126 comments Glad you liked it, Allison! AND I liked the next two books even MORE than Sabriel :D
Also, if you've finished (or when you finish!) the series, there's a book of his short stories that features one that takes place after the third book: Across the Wall A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories.
How cool a character is Mogget?!

message 18: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Is Sabriel still a part of the rest of the series? I noticed the main characters are different.

Mogget is interesting :P I enjoyed him (it).

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I ordered the set on B&N today, along with Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories. I can't wait!

message 20: by Jean (new)

Jean | 17 comments It's a series in the sense that one follows on from the other, but it's not the same main central character. Time has moved on.

message 21: by Jean (new)

Jean | 17 comments Oh, and when I said the Keys of Time series earlier, I meant the Keys to the Kingdom series. Oops.

message 22: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo I love this trilogy with a passion. One of my more favorite YA series. Did NOT like the short story/novella in Across the Wall, though. Didn't feel like it added anything to the series so I am forgetting it exists.

Hmmm...I haven't re-read these books THIS year...maybe...NO! I have way too many unread books to read first! But still...

message 23: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) I just listened to Sabriel on audiobook and loved every minute of it. I had tried to read this years ago but gave up, just goes to show that you should give things a second try.
Looking forward to reading the next 2 but will be a while before the tbr pile sinks a little to add new books to it.

message 24: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Did you listen to the same version I did, Katrina? With Tim Curry as the narrator? He did such a nice job! I especially loved his voice for Mogget.

message 25: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katrinasreads) Yeah Tim Curry narrated, Mogget's voice was great. I was worried at the start when he did a voice for a small girl who'd lost her cat - luckily she never appeared again.

message 26: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments I'm on hold at the library now for the Lirael CDs. Looks like Tim Curry does all three of the books. I'm looking forward to listening to them.

message 27: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am only about 100 pages into Sabriel. I really like it, but going off the few other characters he has described so far, I'll like it more when others are introduced and really become part of the story, instead of asides.

thats very true...for the first chunk of the story Sabriel is pretty much it...and while that didn't bother me, it was nice for her to finally get some side kicks :)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments I truly enjoyed Shade's Children by Nix. I had previously read Sabriel and can recommend this novel highly.

Nix is obviously a master of the fantasy realm. This novel is about the earth modified into a dystopian realm, complete with creatures, Overlords, and the use of children to create the various monsters. But there is Shade, a professor who created himself into a computer-imaged being, attempting to help the children oppose the Change that has overcome the planet.

Well-written, with clear and disturbing imagery, this is a novel for the fantasy YA lovers. The characters are extremely well-developed and the structure of the book is unique.

I highly recommend this novel.
