Does updating a cover necesarily create a new edition?

I have a new cover for my book The Giant of the Tidesmouth and would like to change the Goodreads image to show it. The new cover can be found on the Smashwords and Amazon pages (Amazon linked here):

Can this be done without creating a new version of the book? Even if not, I would like to get this done.

No.

You can manually create a new edition of your book, or a librarian can do so for you.
