i actually love long series like this... it feels like a tv series and you really get to know the characters... what is the books about though? romance, fantasy, horror?

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments I actually have a question...for anyone who knows how/has done it before...

how would I go about putting a specific book cover in certain comments of mine?

Say for example, like I'm tallying up my total reads for December, and hypothetically, I've read four books. I've noticed that others simply post the cover art of each book they've read, and I'd like to know how to do that! I think it's cool, and would save me some typing, in the long run. :)

If you still have no idea what I'm talking about; I apologize for my lack of clarity! Please let me know if you can't understand what I'm asking...and I'll try to explain better.

Hi,
There may be different book covers for the one of the books that you have read and the one that looks the hard copy would be the better one as it has the exact number of pages etc.

As far as posting the cover art into the review box; I'm not exactly sure on how you would do that.

I hope that the information provided was helpful to an extent..if not then sorry..xx

:)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments Have you thought about having a group readathon? Basically pick a topic/theme for a month and everyone reads as many books as possible that fit?

Alison wrote: "Have you thought about having a group readathon? Basically pick a topic/theme for a month and everyone reads as many books as possible that fit?"

Actually to be honest, I've seen readathons in a lot of groups but I never really understood what it means. Um...so what is it exactly?

message 56: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments The most common one I've come across is the alphabet one. The idea is that you use books you've read to work through each letter of the alphabet and you get a point for each letter.

For example,

Person 1 reads Attachments by Rainbow Rowell as title works for A. Person 1 gets 1 point the group gets 1 point.

Person 2 reads Twilight for B as main character is Bella. Person 2 gets 1 point and the group tally is now 2 points

and so on.

You can do other themes as well such as holidays where the task is to read books with some connection to holidays. Could be in the title, cover or story.

Um..okay. I think I get an idea. I'll check out the same in other groups and try to come up with more ideas. Thank you for explaining :) I'll think of introducing this in the group in 1-2 months.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments Hope you don't mind but have another suggestion re the buddy reads. Have you considered switching it around and basing on books rather than paired members?

You could start a thread where people post which book they want to read and if someone or a few people also want to read that book they can set a start date and set up a thread for it.

We used to do that initially when the group was started. However it didn't work out much, we hardly got a few buddy reads. So after a few months, I thought of changing the system.

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments So I've been scouting around on other groups and had another idea. Have you ever tried a "pay it forward"?

Basically the first person recommends a book they liked. Whoever fancies that book agrees to read it and recommends a book they liked, someone else agrees to read that book and recommends a book they liked and so on.

Well as of now we don't have any such challenge but I'll consider adding this :) Maybe try making it a bit more difficult!

message 63: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 418 comments If nothing else it would probably need some rules around books suitable for all and no promoting your own.

Thinking about it you could maybe do a challenge pay it forward. First person sets the challenge clue. Next person accepts the challenge (reads a book that fits the clue) and sets the clue for next person.

We had this challenge in our group earlier...since it didn't work out, I had it moved to the archives. Here's the link of the earlier challenge : https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 66: by Tina (new)

Tina Well my favorite is steam-punk! What an idea!! Incredible concept. And I love the covers!. The women are intelligent and brave!! And then of course all the gadgets!!

And another Goodreads author who is making it big is Jason Gurley Eleanor A Novel by Jason Gurley

message 67: by Tina (new)

Tina Can I talk about my 2 Bloodhounds and what a wonderful book they would be in? First tale. Early one morning before light, I let the dogs outside. I was sitting having my coffee when they come running back...soak and wet!! It was raining outside! They were all over me, as if it were funny. I'm screaming and running away.

Next one. I was washing clothes and pulling them out the dryer when the 100 lb Bloodhound came over with drool hanging from his mouth. Oh No!! Yes he did, he shook his head and that drool went all over my clean clothes. I cried that time.
Next one: So I got smart let them in and blocked off the hallway. Got dressed for appt. Went back to say goodbye and their water bowl was empty! It was full when I let them in!! They intentionally drank all that water knowing I was going to have to go into the war zone and get it and fill it. SO I out on a rain coat headed in, gave them there water...but they got my dress pant..*sigh*. They did that on purpose I know.

And final: I was unloading clothes again when I put the clothes on top of the dryer. Ok from washer to dryer back and forth, then I caught him, Zeus. He was taking a sock out. I had to chase him down and get the nasty wet slobbery sock from him.

message 68: by Tina (new)

Tina How about expressing ones feelings, not really gothic but a sad day perhaps where others can show their compassion no matter what nationality or religion.
I wish we could all be happy as some of you are but just one thread for those who want to go there.

message 69: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods I am stuck in a book rut. I have read horror novels since I was 10 years old. That is 21 years of basically the same thing over and over. I really need something new. If anyone has any book/series/author suggestions that is the complete opposite of what I have been reading, it would be much appreciated if you would share them with me. Thank you so much!

message 70: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments I know you've probably read Stephen King, if you're a fan of horror; but he also wrote a 'writer's help guide' of sorts...it's called 'On Writing'. If you like to write in your free time, or even if you just read a lot...or maybe you want a few extra facts about King...it's pretty helpful on all fronts! I got mine gently used on Amazon, but you might be able to find it elsewhere, as well.
Other unique books:
I always ask this because she's one of my favorite writers, but have you tried AS King? She does realistic fiction mixed with a bit of magical realism; and I really like most of her books. (My least favorite has been 'Reality Boy', but anything else by her is good!)
'The Storied Life of AJ Fikry' by Gabrielle Zevin...certainly not horror. In fact, it's extremely pleasant!!
'Audrey, Wait!' by Robin Benway; about a girl who ends up plagued by a catchy song her ex-boyfriend wrote for her.

Hope you find something you like! :)

message 71: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments For Neha:
I know you commented a few months back now; and I hope you found some good books for your son! I've been reading since age 3, and here are some books I liked (still like) when I was younger:
the Magic Treehouse series (kids fantasy series teaching history/science. I think there are at least 20 of them!) by Mary J. Osbourne

the Secrets of Droon (not as good as Magic Treehouse, I don't think, and not quite as well-written...but I liked them anyway) I can't remember the author, though!

the Hidden series (kids adventure/thriller) by Margaret Peterson Haddix

the Adventures of Cam Jansen (kids mystery series, where the girl has a photographic memory!) by David A Adler

Goosebumps, by RL Stine (I read the whole series in third and fourth grade, but it depends on how much your son can handle. If he likes scary/creepy/weird, he'll be ok, but if not...probably steer clear of these for now.)

Little House on the Prairie, by Laura Ingalls Wilder (historical/biographical, but for a younger audience...about an American family's life in the mostly unsettled USA.)

Also, anything by Andrew Clements is great...he does realistic fiction for kids about 9 to 14.

Lastly: I don't know how you feel about Junie B. Jones...as she does use incorrect grammar A LOT. But my parents let me read basically whatever I wanted because I was reading about two to three grade levels ahead, and they couldn't keep up with me...and I have to say, I loved Junie B. If you want to teach your son proper grammar, and how to work within the boundaries of language, she's probably not the best choice, as far as educational reading. But she's spunky, and not at all girly, and though she can be a bit of a loudmouth and a brat, she's fun, and hilarious, I think.

Hope this helps you find even more books to enjoy together!

I looked up all of those books/authors and I'm really interested in the AS King person. Every synopsis I read looked awesome! Thank you so much!

Ishi Bhanot | 5637 comments Hi! I was thinking it'd be sorta nice to have something called "Reading Rooms". Any group member can make one in the designated folder to keep track of their current readings, what they plan on reading next, their thoughts while reading, and on and on and on.
That's like reading logs, I guess?
"Rooms" just makes this sound cozier and homier! :D

That is a great idea really. Even I keep a reading log in another group so why not just keep it here?
I've set up a folder. I'll add the info on how it works later but you can add a thread under your name and start right away if you want.

Regina Timothy (reginatimothy) | 22 comments I would like to recommend Full Circle - A contemporary fiction novel that tells a tale of friendship, family, and hope. It explores the devastation of loss, the great capacity of forgiveness and the lengths our loved ones will go to protect us.

The book follows the life of Samia-al-Sayyid an Iraqi immigrant living in the U.S with her son and the relationships she creates. When a terrorist attack destroys those relationships, she fells responsible and she is forced to flee back to Iraqi where eminent death awaits her. Will she survive?

Unless a minimum page number is mentioned in a particular reading challenge, there's no such limit.
