I like it quiet too. I have a hard time reading when my husband is around. He seems to find it necessary to talk to me whenever I pick up a book.

Glad you're finding some interesting older threads. :)

Thanks Wendy! I see you changed your picture! I like it! :)

Also maybe we all need a "quiet room" to read and put a sign on the door that says "Reading In Progress - Do Not Disturb"!

I changed my pic to the scariest thing I could think for Halloween... my old high school graduation picture from 1979! Hard to believe it's been that long.

ahhh... a quiet room. The only sound pages being turned and tea being sipped. Pure heaven. :)

Trisha (trishcollette) | 43 comments If it's articles, research, or work related reading, then yes I can have background noise. When it comes to novels, absolutely NO noise. I only read my books in bed at night before going to sleep. It's my zen bubble.

I usually listen to music while reading whenever it is possible, most often Metal (Black, Death, Doom, Heavy, Thrash...), but sometimes other styles, like (Progressive) Rock or Zeuhl, as well.

message 56: by Marie Helene (new)

Marie Helene | 741 comments Quite recently I discovered that jazz is good when reading horror stories. Listening to Ella Fitzgerald or Chet Baker is a blast. But it has to be background music.

Sounds like my hubby. He LOVES death and other metal. His fav is Opeth. I personally love punk rock (90's or earlier) for background noise.

Fernando | 298 comments I hate to read, sleep, eat, etc. w/out any background noise. Especially when I'm home alone. If I remember correctly, the last time I had an audiobook playing in the background. Besides falling asleep, I have no issues concentrating on the book i'm reading.

I can't have any noise when reading. maybe a fan, but that just puts me to sleep. I usually have my lazy cats laying on me or next to me and they sure do grunt and snore a lot. but anything other than that and I can't focus.

I always play music when I read. Sometimes I stick to just 'music' - scores from movies, but I have no problem putting on a CD of rock music. I have always found that instead of distracting me, it actually helps me focus.

message 62: by Tim (new)

Tim Gunter | 154 comments I have to have some kind of background noise whenever I read. Generally that entails either some kind of movie, or random sitcom I've seen a million times playing from netflix or something. I know it seems a little counter intuitive, but without some kind of background noise going I find it near impossible to actually focus on what I'm actually trying to do.

message 63: by Gerhard (new)

Gerhard Dead silence! Nothing else will do. Even the dogs barking next door can drive me to distraction when I'm reading.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Normally, I have the local Oldies radio station on in the background. Most present day music has too much drumming for my taste (or even worse, electronic drums), and classical music bores me to death, so I usually stick to 50s rock music (or revivals such as The Stray Cats or The Cramps).

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) | 936 comments I have a video on youtube I always listen to with my headphones while i'm reading, it's a rain storm on the ocean. I can listen to nature sounds while i'm reading, to block out the real world noise so I can read.

Here is the one i'm generally listening to https://youtu.be/-i8IMw5WeXc

This is great. Thank you! I've been looking for something like this as background for when I'm writing.

Steve Parcell | 912 comments I mostly read on my commute in to London so have TalkSport via my headphones and it drowns out people. Particularly those who feel it is ok to hold an extremely loud phone conversation when everybody else is trying to relax.

I had to smile when I read this. I have a couple of rambunctious crumb munchers that can have a volume level that's not conducive for a reading environment. So, I discovered the background white noise on Spotify and pump it through my headphones to drown them out. I mix it up between rain sounds, ocean sounds, and Native American flute music. It all does the trick.

message 74: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Williams (thewrongwriter) | 48 comments I must have silence when reading for long stretches. Thankfully, it's rather easy to get said silence. I prefer to run cackling through the house, swinging a blunt instrument or perhaps a realistic-looking stuffed animal.

This usually scares the roommates enough that they shut up for about 20-30 minutes. Ahhh, blessed silence.

YouTube has a bunch of rain sounds. I've used this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q76bM... but there are plenty of others. Look 'em over. I'll sometimes use them just to remember what rain sounds like.

Karen (hmssparky) | 200 comments I use my Pandora relaxing music playlist. No lyrics to distract me, LOL! In a pinch, there's always The Weather Channel. Once you see a forecast, you don't have to worry that you're missing anything else! I used this all the time when I was doing my college homework/studying.

BTW, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, so I guess it worked!

I've discovered the joy of ambient music/sounds on YouTube. I started with music, but now I sometimes read to 10 hours of cabin in the forest with rain or attic with thunderstorms. 😹

I've been meaning to try this, so thank you for reminding me! I saw someone on my instagram feed post yesterday that they had found an eerie-sounding ambient room on youtube - I'll drop the link if I can remember who shared it or find it myself.
