Maddie Tiare Am I the only one who thought that Even Walker was creepy as all get out? I mean, he really freaked me out. What with bathing her while she was unconscious (and changing her clothes--including her underwear... while she was unconscious!) And kissing her when she didn't want him to. Not to mention keeping her in his house and not letting her leave. By the end I chalked their relationship up to Stockholm Syndrome, because there's no other way she would like him. I didn't understand when she fell for him, because I'd still be mad about the underwear changing thing.

(This is not a spoiler free topic)

(I'm serious, there's a spoiler coming up)

When she met up with Ben/Zombie I was really happy, because I became hopeful that she might end up with somebody other than Evan Walker. It's her crush, for crying out loud, please can she get together with him, instead. Please!

Edit

I forgot all about the reading her diary thing. That crosses a line, too. If somebody ever read my personal writings I could never forgive them for it.
And, let's not forget that he saw her naked (when he changed her clothes) before he even knew her.

Edit, again

Some proof from the text that Cassie was freaked out by him/that his behavior wasn't okay.

And then Evan Walker kisses me.
Holding my hand against his chest, his other hand sliding across my neck, his touch feathery soft, sending a shiver that travels down my spine into my legs, which are having a hard time keeping me upright. I can feel his heart slamming against my palm and I can smell his breath and feel the stubble on his upper lip, a sandpapery contrast to the softness of his lips, and Evan is looking at me and I’m looking back at him.
I pull back just enough to speak. “Don’t kiss me.”
He lifts me into his arms. I seem to float upward forever, like when I was a little girl and Daddy flung me into the air, feeling as if I’d just keep going up until I reached the edge of the galaxy.
He lays me on the bed. I say, right before he kisses me again, “If you kiss me again, I’m going to knee you in the balls.”
His hands are incredibly soft, like a cloud touching me.
“I won’t let you just…” He searches for the right word. “…fly away from me, Cassie Sullivan.”
He blows out the candle beside the bed.

(Evan to Cassie):
“If you try to leave, I’ll just follow. You can’t stop me, Cassie. How are you going to stop me?”

Hannah (This reply may also contain spoilers for the end you've been warned) Yea, I kind of agree. I was always iffy about Evan until the end, then I realized he really was different and had chosen to fight with the humans (he was pretty badass at the end) but before that he usually just made me uncomfortable.

I think it's pretty likely she'll end up with Ben, but at this point he doesn't really know her much at all, so I'd definitely like to see that progression in the next book. I mean we still don't know if Evan made it out so who knows.

Chelsie Hinds Well, I mean, she'd been bleeding and he had to clean her wound. It is a little weird that he changed her but leaving her in her own blood seems a little strange too. Also, Cassie totally wanted him to kiss her. And if he let her leave, she would die. It wasn't like she could walk that well and if something else caught her out there, she was a goner. I don't know. I'm not completely defending him because there were moments where I found him creepy. But at the same time, I feel like that's what happens when you have an alien trying to be human.

message 4: by Ashley (last edited Jun 19, 2013 05:45PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ashley I think Ben would end up with Rifer or Riper or what's her name. He doesn't really know Cassie. Besides that part at the end where it seems like she still likes him and there might be a love triangle really ticked me off. It seemed like she already loved Evan so y change that?

Bonny Bon Bon i loved Evan and was angry that (SPOILER AHEAD)
she ended up all snuggly with i cant really remember you, ben at the end right after Evan whom confessed his love for her and she basically returned (without words). i mean come on!!! what is not to love about him - protective, can cook, can hunt, is a survivor, has inside info on the aliens, hot, wears lumberjack shirts lol all that vs wimp ass ben lol jk jk i do like ben just not for cassie he should stick with trying to make ringer smile.

Mayra I liked Evan. I thought he was a sweetheart towards Cassie. He really loved her.

Tina J She did actually question herself, saying would she still 'like' him if he wasn't so good-looking.
As for all the weird stuff, like hulking outside the room(s) - I put that down to him being an extra-terrestrial. lol

Hiro Evan was a sweetheart he cared about her. Cassie was very rude to him and he still stayed. Ben was cool too but I loved Evan. Hopefully in the next book we find out he is still alive.

Caitlin SPOILERS

I'm personally all team Evan. Cassie was rude and always trying to find reasons to not like him, and all he wanted was for her to love him back. I do beleave his story about not wanting to tell her he was a silencer because she would in fact, have left if she knew and would have been killed due to her injury. The lurking around in the halls was just that he wanted to be close when she needed him. Where as Ben did not even remember the girl he rode the bus with through out middle school, because he was to worried about being a stuck up playboy. He did not even remember her by THE BABIES or her name. I still love Ben but I just wish Ben could focus on Ringer because I since a real connection between the two. Since they are so different from each other they work nicely together.

I think that the things that you (and other people) like about Evan are exactly the things that I dislike about him. I don't like how protective he is because it creeps me out, though I can see that he would be because he lost his sister (but it still creeps me out), cooking and hunting are probably required in the post-apocalypse days so that doesn't stand out to me as something special.

Caitlin wrote: "Cassie was rude and always trying to find reasons to not like him, and all he wanted was for her to love him back."

Well, yeah, of course she was looking for reasons not to like him. He kept her trapped in his house and changed her clothes while she was unconscious. I'm pretty sure that if I guy did that to me I would be looking high and low for other reasons to hate him. And I don't think that the way you get a girlfriend is to keep her trapped in your house and smother her with love until she returns the feelings.

And, on the topic of Ben, he basically was told to forget his past life completely, so if she had registered with him at all in school he probably blocked her out. And, besides, guys are not required to get to know all the girls at their school, so if she was just another face in the crowd when they were in high school I don't think he can be blamed for that.

Kelly Hull He was my favorite character :)

message 12: by Anna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anna I think he's super creepy too.
I'm glad he's probably dead now...

Nathania Ma Maybe since I'm team Evan all along I don't find him creepy. His behavior may differ from the type of behavior known typically to humans because he's after all, only partly human. Some of his actions might constitute to "stalking" in fact, and it was true he invaded Cassie's privacy many times, and true, rather than "loving Cassie", I think it's almost like he decided Cassie would be the meaning for his survival because he deemed living as having something or someone to die for. Yet, isn't that what really love is all about? You only would reach out and beyond to the other person and die for the other person because you care so much that whether your actions are logical or not no longer matter. I am upset by the way how Cassie treated Evan and frankly, I think he deserves a girl way better than Cassie!

message 14: by Bee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bee Kate I think Evan was not so much creepy just a bit full-on. Maybe it's just because I'm not into the whole idea of "Love at first sight" whereas the minute Evan saw her he literally sprinted away claiming to be in love. But I agree, perving at her diary and then washing her naked before she was even aware of his existence? Creepster alert! Maybe in the possible sequel [lbr he'd be stupid not to continue this on, besides how many sci-fic/dystopian books now are stand alones!] we'll get an explanation about Evans behaviour. I agree with Caitlin when she said that Ben should focus on Ringer. Him and Cassie just aren't suited.

I think it should be Ringer/Ben and Cassie/Sammy then hopefully an explanation about Evan.

Maddie Tiare Bryony wrote: "But I agree, perving at her diary and then washing her naked before she was even aware of his existence?"

I forgot about the diary thing! That just sends him up a notch in the creeper scale! If somebody read anything I ever wrote about myself/my life I think I would probably have to kill them, because that's personal and embarrassing, and it crosses the line. In fact, it's about 5 miles over the line.

anthea I love Evan!! He seems so perfect. But I love Ben too! OH I DON'T KNOW.

This is the first time I couldn't pick between two guys for the main female protagonist.

I guess that means I'll be happy with whoever she ends up with? Unless someone else is introduced (I just hope he's not perfect like the other two). That would really mess up my head a lot.

Maria Evan is a little intense BUT let's not forget that he was on the side of the Aliens that wanted a peaceful coexistence so maybe when he met Cassie he truly thought that there could be something there, and did everything he could to keep her alive.

hazey I was disappointed when the book ended without Evan. The only thing the Ben character was good for was the army. In relation to Cassie, it was a hit and miss.

Celeste I would like to see how Cassie and Ben's relationship turns out, if they even have a relationship, before I decide if I'm for or against Evan.

Because truthfully I had mix feelings about Evan. I liked him but then I didn't. Some times I found his persistence a little too creepy. Like beyond the point of it just being because he loved her. I hope it doesn't turn into a love triangle but I also hope Ben doesn't end up with that other girl.

I'm not very found of her at all.

Maddie Tiare Celeste wrote: "Because truthfully I had mix feelings about Evan. I liked him but then I didn't. Some times I found his persistence a little too creepy. Like beyond the point of it just being because he loved her. "

There were some things that he did that were okay. (I mean, sometimes he was sweet, I guess) but his creepiness was just too overpowering for me. Also, he was pretty insta-love-y, and I think that's why I couldn't justify his actions with "He loved her." Because he had just met her.

message 21: by Andrea (new) - added it

Andrea I honestly love Evan. I don't like Ben, and I really wish Cassie and Evan end up with each other. I don't think Evan is creepy, because the world is in an apocalypse! He saw her and he fell in love with her appearance. Then, by reading her journals, he fell in love with her personality. He couldn't kill her, and finding her almost dead was in a way a blessing to him because he had an excuse to be with her. I don't think anything he did was creepy, under the circumstances. I just need to know if he is still alive its killing me!

Isabell Yea I didn't like Evan. He rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like his character at all the romance between him and Cassie felt forced and I sensed no chemistry!

message 23: by Sarah (last edited Jul 11, 2013 06:07PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah I liked Ben but found Evan more interesting.

I never felt that Evan "kept" Cassie in the house or did not let her leave. She could not walk because of her injury. I think he was afraid for her safety. He just wanted to be around if she needed him, I don't find it creepy just caring and protective.

I believe Evan made up his mind/came to term/accepted his feelings for Cassie, that is why he chose to take care of her. After all, he was supposed to kill her but couldn't do it instead he got curious, so he knew her already. I think at that point he's already decided he was going to help her because he couldn't kill her.
Oh, sorry but I never felt that Evan kissed when she did not want to be kissed. He just did it and she never protested, never had a bad reaction after it.

Maddie Tiare Sarah wrote: "I never felt that Evan "kept" Cassie in the house or did not let her leave. She could not walk because of her injury. I think he was afraid for her safety. He just wanted to be around if she needed him, I don't find it creepy just caring and protective."

Because I know I’m not crazy, and I didn’t make up the fact that she couldn’t escape from Evan, I went and looked in the book. I found this quote that illustrated my point. “If you try to leave, I’ll just follow. You can’t stop me, Cassie. How are you going to stop me?”

That sounds to me like she can’t get away from him. (So, I was slightly wrong that she couldn’t leave the house, but she still couldn’t get away from Evan) And I find that to be creepy. I know that that’s a personal preference thing, but I think that if Cassie wanted to get rid of Evan she should have been able to, and she couldn’t.

Caitlin Tiare wrote: "Am I the only one who thought that Even Walker was creepy as all get out? I mean, he really freaked me out. What with bathing her while she was unconscious (and changing her clothes--including her ..."

SPOILERS

I've decided to defend my statement. I'm not trying to hate on Ben because he was in fact my favorite character. Reading his parts in the book were the most entertaining for me because I loved how much his character has changed through out the book. As for Even I do completely feel he had the right to change her and bathe her. In the story It said something along the line of that she was asleep for days so why would he leave her in her own blood (her clothing was covered in blood and dirt). The dirt and blood could have caused additional infection that could have lead to something worse. If I were in such a situation I would be grateful that he tried to clean me up. It must just be me also, but I never once thought Even kept her "trapped" as you put it. She sure as hell could have left if she pleased. He was only looking out for her (I know,I know he was the on that shot her) But when I read his parts his words were laced with regret. She was being rude, I mean this Hot guy is here trying to help her and she's treating him as if she would have rather had her bones sucked dry by vultures than be anywhere near him. Lastly, "smother her with love until she returns the feelings". I felt him giving off more of a friendship vibe with her at first. Naturally he finally did confess his feelings for her. He felt strongly about her it's natural for him to develop feeling, they spent a lot of time together. The reading of her diary was defiantly a move I wish he did not do, But he did seem pretty convinced on the fact that he wasn't sure if she would make it or not.

I respect your opinion, but I do not agree with it.

Maddie Tiare Caitlin wrote: "She was being rude, I mean this Hot guy is here trying to help her and she's treating him as if she would have rather had her bones sucked dry by vultures than be anywhere near him."

I think this is one of the things that bother me about some of the pro-Evan arguments. (Not all, and I do recognize that there are some good pro-Eve-being-a-good-person arguments) but what your saying is that somebody is allowed to be creepy as long as they're attractive? I understand that his hotness did make a difference to Cassie, but it bothers me that it's a point in his favor. Hot people aren't always good and ugly people aren't always bad.

So, in my opinion, his hotness doesn't make him any less creepy.

I can see your point about trying to prevent infection, but he could have left her underwear on since her open wound was on her leg. Changing her clothes makes sense, changing her underwear is a violation of her privacy.

I agree that Cassie was being rude, but, personally, I think her rudeness was justified.

In my reading I never got a 'friendly' vibe from him. I physically cringed sometimes when he was in a scene, and I always saw his actions as a little bit too forward and sometimes forceful.

(I appreciate that we can disagree and still be civil. I know a lot of fandoms where that wouldn't be possible)

Ashlyn I liked Evan, (Even though he is a bit 'out there'. Pun intended) it annoyed me that at the end of the book, it seemed something might happen between her and Ben. Ben didn't pay any attention to her in school, then she finds someone else and THEN he likes her!!!!??? That annoyed me deeply, and if I was Cassie, I would give him the cold shoulder. Of course, she probably won't. That's just me though. I couldn't forget about Evan, even if Ben did start to pay attention to me.

Spare In response to Evan being creepy, watch while I rebuke every attempt you made.

1. He DID save her life. He shot her in the leg, she was dying of blood loss, he cleaned her wound by bathing her (thereby diffusing any threat of infecting any other unseen wounds), while simultaneously curing her of HYPOTHERMIA. I believe his actions were well calculated, not creepy.

2. I don't recall one paragraph in which he kissed her without him wanting to.

3. Cassie was badly injured, in a world over-ridden with hostile alien lifeforms i'm sure if you saw someone hobbling outside the house on crutches you'd tell them to get back in as well - unless you wanted them to die, which clearly, Evan didn't.

4. Stockholm Syndrome can be ruled out as a possibility for her liking him solely based on the fact that Cassie chose to stay with him. Notice she never tried to ESCAPE, just follow him. I wouldn't want anybody following me either if i were him.

5. I don't know why he read her diary. You never read a girls diary. For that I will never forgive him.

I just love Evan, and it was hard for Cassie to even trust him let alone love him, despite all he did for her.

Jennifer Vardeman I liked Evan a lot. I don't think that Cassie fits with Ben. I know Evan is creepy at times, but I think that they are more for each other. I mean Evan turned against his "own-kind," just because he fell in love with Cassie. What does that tell you. He is not human, which means that he does not think the way humans do. So his actions may not be as creepy to their kind, as it may seem to ours. The aliens stalked Earth for a number of years, so maybe that't their way of living. I would like to see Cassie ending up with Evan. I did not like at the end of the book when Ben and Cassie started getting close. I think that Ringer is a better fit for Ben than Cassie.

versa Yeah, I think that Evan is mysterious, smart, super cute, tough, totally badass and not too overprotective because Cassie can definitely take care of herself and he's pretty much everything that I like in my YA characters, no offense Edward Cullen (HA!). This pretty much accounts for my favorite scenes being (a) when Evan takes out those kids and the descriptions are chilling (I know morbid, but I loved the way Yancey wrote it and (b) the ending where Cassie and Ben and Sam are in the room and together *coughcough* Cassie and Evan pretty much save the day.

message 31: by Adri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adri I love cevan (Cassie + Evan) better than I like bens character

Allie Evan was slightly creepy, but I was able to overlook that because he did A LOT for Cassie, I mean the guy possibly risked his life to save HER brother. And really he was supposed to kill her but couldn't in the end, thus betraying his species. So all in all, I really liked Ben's character too but I don't like the idea of Ben and Cassie together.

notyourfriend I don't know HOW I feel about any of them really.... Ringer almost seems awkward for some reason.... I don't know...

message 35: by Abby (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abby The first time I read the book, I was hesitant to like Evan just cause I wanted Cassie to end up with Ben, but the second time, I started to really like Evan and not think he was a creeper but just a little off. So now I don't know who I want her to end up with, but I know I definitely don't want Ben and Ringer together

message 36: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Dyer I really love Evan, despite how creepily he was portrayed in places... I really wanted him and Cassie to get together, but at the same time I didn't, as I felt that it wouldn't be an equal relationship between them, if you get what I mean...

message 37: by Bd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bd Myriam I love Evan, creepy or not, he's not supposed to be a normal young boy, 'cause he's not. I really don't want her to end up with Ben, he never noticed her before, it's not that i don't like him but... I don't know, i guess we'll have to wait and see!

message 38: by Cecilia (last edited Sep 11, 2013 07:43AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cecilia Carreon I loved evan i wanted to see more from cassie towards him i think people are just scared now of protective and perfect guys since "other books" give them a bad reputation but i didnt see anything wrong with his character.

i mean he is an alien and in an alien invasion human morals sorta slip the mind its about survival and finding something to live for. He did that not to mention if it wasnt for him she wouldnt have gotten sammy back.

I wanted to see how Ben reacted too but he seems more compatible with ringer.

The ending left me so on edge did Evan die or not and why was bens arm around cassie. There best not be a triangle :/

Anyways evan is a good person and cassie was fortunate to have been shot by him :)

Sarah Younan I love evan! i dont care if hes sort of creepy. hes awesome hes like a peeta and gale mixture!! <3333

Carrie White Evan is the only part I didn't love about this book. He almost feels like a bastardization of insta-love. What's his motivation? What's he actually DOING? I have a feeling this w/b explained b/c hopefully there's a follow-up novel, but as soon as the author introduced Evan I started hating how much WASN'T explained there. He's the only character I didn't like, for that reason.

Sarah Younan Ok think about it this way. The less we know about evan walker, the more we get interested in finding out. Its the mystery, hopefully the 2nd book explains :)
Love u evan!

Arden YEA.
im not sure how I feel about him....
but I do not want her to end up with ben..thats just piss me off

message 43: by Julieta (last edited Sep 24, 2013 01:46AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Julieta I think he is creepy BUT he can be excused at some point because he is not a normal human guy. He is an alien and even if his kind have been watching the humans for thousands of years it doesn't mean that they are going to act perfectly human (especially when there are human beings that act like that).

The only thing Evan did that is inexcusable is reading Cassie's diary. I get the "I don't know if you are gonna wake" thing but he should have waited until he was actually dead before reading things that weren't supposed to be read by anyone but herself and gives him details about her deeper thoughts, feelings and fears.

Evan bathing Cassie is a little disturbing but she was filthy and a mess and it was a really good thing that he did it because she could have caught an infection. If Ringer would have bathed her to prevent an infection we wouldn't have been having this problem. It's not like he could have gone find another female to bathe her. If Val would have been alive and he would have bathed Cassie anyway or if he had the choice to take her to a hospital but he didn't THAT would have been creepy. He did what he had to do to keep her alive.

Evan didn't lock her down. She could have run away but she didn't. She was too weak to go anywhere alone and in more danger than before because she couldn't run. He taught her how to shot properly so she was able to defend herself better. Yeah, he hid her weapon but I'm really convinced that Evan is one of those male book characters that would let the girl they love do whatever she wants with him INCLUDING getting a knife from the kitchen and stabbing him without even a "WTF?! Are you insane?!!". He will probably go with: "I know I deserve this. I haven't been completely honest with you but you are gonna die without me so you should think a little more before stabbing me."

I'm not entirely sure if I believe in love at first sight or not but let's say I believe in it. Evan fell in love with Cassie enough to betray his entire kind for her. Yeah, he shot her but he didn't kill her and that's what he was supposed to do. He kept her alive regardless of who knows how many years of being told to do otherwise. It takes guts to go against everything you have ever known even if he was in good terms with the human Evan Walker.

Evan knew Cassie would be doomed without him and that's why he insisted over and over again on going with her even if she didn't want him there. He even offered going alone to keep her safe but he accepted what she decided to do. And he was RIGHT in the end! Besides being a killing machine he knows the inside and if he hadn't been there Sammy, Cassie and Zombie would be dead.

Evan didn't want to reveal what he was because he was afraid of Cassie rejecting him which is what would have happened if he had come clean the second they met. Cassie accepted it because she was already feeling things for him and even then she had some troubles accepting it. She took off.
I don't think Evan forcefully kissed her. Cassie told her no once but she wasn't really convincing and when he tried to kiss her again, one millisecond after the no, she kissed him back. That's a mixed signal that has more to do with Cassie's personal fights that with Evan himself.

Regardless of all I wrote I do believe Cassie reacts like a normal girl would do except for the "Would I trust him if he wasn't so hot?" part. All the questioning, the doubts and the paranoia are completely perfect imo. They live in an apocalictic world where humanity is mostly gone and most of the things she had seen in the past 4 months are horrible. She has every right to not trust this random guy who she doesn't know and who does things that doesn't fit with who he claims to be. I actually say Go Cassie! for being more realistic and not blindly trust in the hot guy who just saved you for not apparently good reason and who might be one of the Others or a dangerous human being.

I like Evan and I think most of his actions are justified, same as Cassie's. I want them to end up together.
I don't like Zombie for her. Zombie fits better with Ringer.

In another note, have anyone noticed that the words Cassie remembers of Evan teaching her how to shot are the exact same that Ringer uses with Zombie? And both, Ringer and Evan, mention chess? I might be looking too much into it but what if Ringer is one of the Others too?

message 44: by Cassidy (last edited Dec 10, 2013 06:21PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cassidy I am in agreement with the comment above. Evan's actions are all mostly justified. I mean, yeah i found him a little freaky in the beginning, but after all that he's done and given up for Cassie, i'd say he's a alright guy!

Even though Cassie and Ben have some back history, i think him and Ringer will still end up together. They're just too compatible.. not to mention the fact that i love her. she's a great character, (She kind of reminds me of June from 'Legend' in some ways!).
Cassie and Evan will probably end up together anyways... assuming that he's alive..???
The ending really pissed me off! How could we just not know whether Evan made it out or not! Is there going to be a second book or not?! What?! Grrrrr!!!

Also, on the whole "Ringer being an Other" subject, that is very plausible. She did strike me as being different. She has incredible skills with guns (like Evan, and probably all undercover Others), and idk she just seems to be a little off. If that's the case, i think its ironic that she was fighting WITH the humans. Was/is she on a mission, or did she switch sides like Evan?

A second book needs to be written. Loose ends must be tied up.

Collette Skroch I have to agree that he is kinda creepy, but I do like him and yeah their relationship is probably based on Stockholm syndrome but I like the character and I can't seem to get enough of him, so yeah he's creepy but o well, Edward watched Bella sleep in twilight so I guess that every book has to have that one creepy guy.

sim Evan is not only creepy. He's ultra, super, mega creepy! *shudder* O.o

Kacie I found that their relationship somehow felt unnatural, like it didn't all fit together. At first Evan was super creepy to me I was telling Cassie not to fall for him in my head! But then he sorta grew on me towards the end of the book so I accepted the fact that Cassie was gonna end up with him. But of course, he has to go and sacrifice himself and then Cassie finally meets up with Ben! I'm a sucker for those stories where the girl has a major crush on a male interest and he finally notices how great she is and they end up together. So I hate to say it but I really hope Cassie ends up with Ben instead of Evan and Ben does NOT end up with Ringer!
