I have seen the movie many times, but never read the novel --- I was curious to know whether the movie plot element that has Daniel eventually creating a TV show for kids was also present in the novel?

No, it isn't. However, Daniel is an unemployed actor which is used to explain how he becomes Madame Doubtfire, how he manages to be available to work during the afternoon and one of the reasons why his ex-wife gets so angry with him - late child maintenance payments.
