I'm really agree with you

Nikki I'm probably alone on this, but I found the romance between Arya and Eragon to be kind of disturbing.

In Eragon, when they are getting ready for battle, Eragon tells Arya to stay safe for HIS happiness. Not that she should survive for her own self, but that since it would make him unhappy if she wasn't there to oggle at anymore, she should stay safe. They barely had three conversations by that point.

After that I was too weirded out by Eragon and his ulta-intense crush on Arya (that she mostly dissuades and barely reciprocates) to like the pairing. He just came off as really slimy.

Therefore, I'm glad they didn't end up staying together at the end.

I get where you're coming from. If you like the main character, Eragon, you'd want him to be happy and ultimately achieve his goals. Namely, dating Arya.

I just think it would have been more rewarding to see Arya's distance and rejection of his advances respected. The hero always getting the girl, even when she wasn't interested before, is a pretty tired cliché in my opinion.

I agree, although i didnt think his crush was disturbing, that i never felt that their actions would lead to a relationship at the end. Arya was distance and i was sure after the battles ended the rebuilding and healing of the elves would be her main focus. Arya always chose duty over anything else

I have to agree I wanted Arya and Eragon to be together and I thought they would be.The events in the end surprised and disappointed me.

you're not alone, I agree.

Sparrowlicious The romance was rushed.
I have to hand it to Paopao here though, he didn't make them end up together. I hate nothing more than romances in story that are only there because the main character needs a love interest. Eragon's longing for Arya though annoyed me through the entire series. This portrays a thing that is wrong with our world today:
The 'nice guy' syndrom.
"Oh no, I love her but I can never tell her. I'll try be her friend and maybe she'll fall in love with me."
Does not work.
This dishonesty already makes me angry when it happens in real life, in a fictional world it makes me wonder if the author even these things through.

Weston Glory I didn't think the romance was rushed at all as they didn't end up together by the end of Inheritance. Furthermore, I found it to be a natural progression of events. Eragon being as young as he was developed a crush that eventually turned into real love. Arya started off not having any feelings for Eragon but eventually started to reciprocate them when Eragon started to grow up. It happens.

At the end of Inheritance, it would have been silly for Eragon and Arya to be together when they didn't know where they stood romantically and they both had dedicated themselves to immensely vital duties as leaders. Like they both asked each other rhetorically, would the other give up their duty to be with them and the answer was the same... no. The dragons and the elves needed them more than they needed each other, at least for the time being.

Anyhow Paolini said, Eragon and Arya by the end of Inheritance are only at the start of their relationship, not it's end by any stretch. They both are going to live for a very long time and thus have plenty of time to work out the rough edges so to speak and that makes perfect sense. That's why I wasn't disappointed by the ending because it wasn't actually the end for them at all. Relationships take time, especially ones that are going to be strong enough to outlast entire empires like theirs will be. Their relationship was already strong enough that they could share their true names with each other that early on. When it usually takes even amongst elves many, many years to do such a thing, when Arya never even told Faolin. I can see how and why Eragon and Arya would hold on to their relationship, no matter how far away they are from each other.

Well, somehow you 're right.Especially in book 2,I'm really agree with you.Book 2 is little dry and classroom style(I like this word!). And maybe Eragon and Arya's love is little dry and Paolini should write it little unclassroom style! But you know all of the story is not dry.For example when Eragon went to a cave that Brom is there at the end of the story,I don't found that dry! Paolini wrote that moment very good. But about Eragon's love you're right. It's classroom style!:))

Phoenix I wanted them to be together so bad. It made fore a bitter-sweet ending. I started the series when I was 11 and ended it when I was 17. It is still my favorite series today.

Weston Glory If/when Paolini gets to writing book five, hopefully he can write Eragon and Arya like someone who will be in well into his 30's by the time he's done polishing it.
