Marla | 1803 comments Hi, I'm joining late as usual...I hope someone comes and interacts with me...LK?!

Discussion Questions: Chapters 1 – 3

1) “We arrived in an undignified heap of witch and vampire” is the opening line of book --- nothing like starting off with a bang or should I say a fall. Did you like that we started exactly where we left off with Discovery of Witches? Do you prefer to have some sort of re-cap of the first book in the beginning chapter?

I did like it that it started right up with no recap. I read a summary to brush up since it's been a while since I read Discovery of Witches. Though I do love the summary chapter provided at the beginning of Eldest and Brsinger, so you could skip them if you didn't need it and not worry about missing anything intrinsic to the story or you could refresh your memory with what the author thought was pertinent.

2) Christopher “Kit” Marlowe (a demon) is one of the first of several real historical figures that Diana meets. Diana is a bit “star-struck”, but also wary since she suspects that Kit is in love with Matthew, due to an inscription Kit wrote to Matthew that Diana saw. Do you think that Diana and Kit will form a friendship or be adversaries?

Kit is as bad as any jealous female. I think Kit and Diana will be adversaries forever. Mostly, because he's a jerk, more than because of jealousy over Matthew.

3) Diana quickly learns that Matthew is part of the “School of Night”, which according to Wikipedia (fount of all knowledge :-D) is a modern name given to a group of poets, philosophers and scientists who were all suspected of believing in atheism. Sir Walter Raleigh is considered the ring leader, although it is not known if these men actually knew one another. Did you look up to see if the “School of Night” was real or look up any of the historical information that has been given (example, the disappearance of the Roanoke settlers)? Given what we know of 20th century Matthew, are you surprised that he is associated with this group of men.

Yes, since Matthew is so devout, I was surprised to find him so close to such secular men. Of course, they were all brilliant and I wasn't surprised to see him surrounded by smart friends.

I did not look up the reference to the School of Night *grins sheepishly* though I meant to. I'm not much of a history buff. I like historical romances in spite of the history. :D

4) Fitting into life in 1590 is not quite as simple as Diana had thought --- her speech, her manners and even her way of walking give her away as different. What do you think the hardest thing to change would be if you traveled back in time? What things did you find humorous about this aspect of the story (example, I thought it was funny that the men assumed she was a widower because she was so old).

I would find the languages most difficult. I did think it was great that she was soooo old to be marrying. I thought the layers of clothing sounded annoying.

5) Matthew encourages Diana to start keeping a journal. Do you think that this Diana’s journal will figure into the story somehow? Do you keep a journal?

I'm positive that the journal will turn back up! I used to keep a journal for about 20 years, but now I'm too busy.

Better late than never Marla ;)
I can keep you company. I think this was such an interesting book in the series. Just loved the travel back in time

Good for you with a journal for that long! I started one about my pregnancy, and then birth, and then milestones with my son. So that has been going for about 3 years now. I only write in it now every few months, but I hope one day he will appreciate it and it will help him when he has children (as I often found myself wondering what my parents thought when they had me as a baby!)

Marla | 1803 comments Thank you, Karen!

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 4 – 7

6) Between the members of the School of Night arguing over how to help Diana to Matthew needing to “buy a beard” and the James Bond reference, I am finding this book much funnier than the first one, are you?

Yes, I also found this book funnier than the first, but also slower with so much history and less romance.

7) Matthew decides to bring a local healer and reputed witch, the Widow Beaton, in to teach Diana about witchcraft, but the meeting doesn’t go well. What do you think about Diana’s new “powers”? Do you think something happened to her while time walking?

I'm not sure what is wrong with Diana's powers, but this also is less interesting than the last book.

8) The arrival of Gallowglass brings several surprises. I think that Diana was much more forgiving than I would be to many of these revelations? Do you think that Diana’s feelings for Matthew will change as she learns more about his 16th century persona?

I liked meeting Matthew's family and friends. Matthew is different in the 16th century. How could all these people not mention to Matthew the things his past self is doing when he returns to the future?!

I hope Diana still loves Matthew after learning his past, but he is so private that I would like learning some of his secrets.

9) What did you think about the revelation that Matthew was also a spy for Queen Elizabeth? Do you think he is acting as a double agent since he is French and catholic. Which was more shocking – that he is a member of the congregation or a spy?

I was surprised that Matthew was a triple agent, if you count the Knights of Lazarus too. It sounded like too much deception to keep straight.

10) Philippe thinks Matthew is dead because the 16th century Matthew disappeared (in front of people’s eyes) when the 21st century Matthew appeared. Do you think Matthew made the right decision to take Diana with him? Do we think that we’ve seen the last of Kit after Matthew “kicks” him out?

I'm sure that Kit will be back and causing trouble for Diana. Philippe being upset that his son is dead would be troubling. How do you explain Matthew's disappearance? And what happens when the 16th century Matthew reappears with no knowledge of 21st century Matthew's actions. Matthew remembers reacting to incidents in the 16th century that he is now not present for...this is not how I imagine time travel to be. The paradox is if it happens when you are in the past, then it has already happened in your past.

11) The final chapter is back in the present in Seville – did you find that jarring? Overall what are you impressions of the first section?

I liked it that Diana's book survived to the present day, but why isn't it still in Matthew's study? I really enjoyed that story line and I hope it ties into Diana & Matthew's 21st century lives.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 8-10

12) The return to Le Sept Tour is quite different than the Diana’s first trip there to meet Ysabeau. Diana is also finally beginning to understand the stature of the de Clermont family. Was Philippe what you expected?

I liked Philippe and he is sort of what I expected of Ysabeau's mate. He's a stubborn, brilliant, strong, opinionated, manipulative, mastermind vampire patriarch.

13) The father-son dynamic apparently crosses over to vampire families as well :-D What do you think of Matthew’s complex relationship with his father? Is it a believable relationship?

Matthew and Philippe's relationship definitely seemed believable. Especially Matthew's guilt over Philippe's death. And Matthew wants his father to be proud of him.

14) Philippe clearly doesn’t approve of Matthew’s relationship with Diana, but he was willing to listen to her story (which cleverly provided a great recap of the first book). Do you think it was fair of Philippe to scold Matthew for bringing their troubles to the past? Do you think he will eventually accept Diana as Ysabeau did?

I hope Philippe will come to accept Diana. I don't think he's as anti-witch as Ysabeau, so it may be easier for him.

15) Philippe directly confronts Matthew about not
consummating their marriage. Since this came up in our discussions, do you think that Harkness was using Philippe to voice the frustrations of readers from the first book. What did you think of this situation? Do you feel that they are married? What did you think about Matthew’s explanation regarding primal possessiveness?

I don't really understand why Matthew won't consummate their marriage. Is it because of the consequences of breaking the Congregation's law? Does Matthew not consider them married? Primal possessiveness sounds scary since Matthew is very controlling and protective already.

I don't really know if I consider them married, since I am a "wedding in a church in front of a priest and your family" kind of girl.

16) Diana decides to make herself at home in Le Sept
Tour by doing research and also trying to learn to run the household. This seems like a daunting task to me --- is this something that you can imagine doing? What would be the hardest part?

The hardest part for me would be to manage the people, but since I am sort of indecisive, making all the decisions needed to run a house would also be difficult.

17) Matthew reveals a lot about his human life to Diana in the church. Why do you think that Ysabeau gave such a different account of his relationship with his first wife than Matthew?

I would have a tough time competing against my husband's dead first wife that he still loves deeply. Honestly, I don't remember what Ysabeau said about Matthew's first wife.

18) The final big reveal is that Matthew was the one that actually killed Philippe after the Nazi’s had tortured him. Did you suspect this? Does this action fit into Matthew’s character?

I didn't guess, but it made sense after it was revealed. I could see Matthew obeying Philippe's wishes including taking his father's life. But I cannot imagine what the Nazi's could've done to break that strong, determined vampire.

I agree with your comments ; especially with Matthew and consummating the marriage. I found that pretty frustrating too!

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 11-14

19. I was shocked with the scene in the haybarn until Philippe's motives became more obvious. What did you think? Predictions on the hereditary "blood rage" and how that may play a part in the book?

I didn't know what Philippe was up to, but I knew he must have some reason. The "blood rage" was not something that might have come up if Philippe hadn't brought it into the open. This would explain why Matthew tries to keep his quick anger in check.

Matthew being a geneticist would also be concerned about passing it on to his children.

20. This part of the book just kept surprising me. Did you expect Diana to kill Andre Champier? Did your feelings towards Philippe change as he set up this whole scenario?

No, I didn't think Diana had it in her to kill Champier, but I think she earned Philippe's respect. I was irritated that Philippe didn't intervene.

21. The third wedding for Diana and Matthew! I think that averages one per week that they have known each other haha. Philippe makes Diana part of the family and also takes her to the temple dedicated to Diana. Do you beleive he will protect her now as fiercely as Matthew does?

I do think that Philippe will protect Diana as he does his other children (who are immortal vampires and much less fragile). I don't know if Philippe can match Matthew's intensity over Diana.

I do consider them married now. :D

22. I really enjoyed the descriptions of this wedding and the banquet, and later the "Christmas" festivities and games. Did you? I have the feeling Harkess is really passionate and enjoying bringing this time period to us.

The wedding preparations were interesting. I also liked to hear about the layers of clothes. I thought it was cute that Diana wanted to protect her wedding dress from getting crushed or soiled.

23. Diana and Matthew finally consumate their marriage. Did you like the "honeymoon" period they were able to have?

I am so glad that Diana and Matthew FINALLY got to consummate their marriage and that even Philippe left them alone for a honeymoon period.

24. Another glimpse to the future talks of a manjasang born of a witch. It also seems to have given Ysabeau some closure. How did you feel about this look into the future?

I'm so glad that Ysabeau got word from Philippe and it eased her grief.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 15 – 17

25. We return back to London and Blackfriars. There are so many references to historical figures it makes my mind swim! Are you researching them as you read? Here is the link for John Fian and Agnes Sampson.

I am such a poor history student that I feel like I should know more of these people.

26. It seems that Matthew did not properly consider the time period (with all these witch trials!) before bringing Diana. Do you think it is just because he didn’t really take much notice of it when he lived through the period? Or is the combination of Diana and Matthew just more noticeable to others than they anticipated?

I was surprised that Matthew took Diana to a time when she might be in danger as news of the witch trials reach them. I'm sure Diana and Matthew are a stunning couple as well as forbidden by the Congregation.

I think Leslie might be correct and *gasp* Matthew's memory isn't as perfect as he seems to think.

27. Conceptico! It has occurred and now they are possibly in even more danger. Do you agree with Matthew that they need to get back to their own time fairly quickly?

They are in terrible danger, but they can't leave until Diana learns how to control her magic.

28. Do you think Mary Sidney will end up helping Diana? She seemed happy enough to turn a blind eye to the bee and snake!

I think that they will become friends. Diana needs a friend and also a kindred alchemist.

29. Matthew is keeping himself busy with his 16th century obligations and they are no closer to finding the manuscript, or a witch to help Diana! Did you agree with Diana’s decision to go shopping and “offer myself as bait” to other witches? Will John Chandler be the one to train her?

I thought it might be a good idea for Diana to attract attention, until she attracted dangerous attention. It sounded like a way to find a witch to train her. John Chandler seems like a possible teacher.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 18 – 21

30. Eep! Father Hubbard is a piece of work isn’t he? Why doesn’t he know Diana’s baby is Matthew’s? Though a vampire, will the fact that he also rules over witches and daemons come into play, too? What did you think of Diana’s request of him?

I was so nervous that Fr. Hubbard would try to take Diana's blood and with all those follower's Matthew and his men would be overcome. It was very tense. Diana really does have guts, she has very little self-preservation skills and cannot keep her mouth shut, but she's clever and outspoken.

I don't know if I could trust any witch that R. Hubbard recommended. Drat that John Chandler and Kit!

31. And Kit is back, however briefly! Comments.

I'm surprised Matthew could be friends with the jerk.

32. Do you think Mary and Diana’s alchemical experiments will come to fruition? Will they generate the philosopher’s stone, or discover something else all together different?

I would have to guess that they will find something interesting, but I don't know what. Philosopher's stone is that like immortality (like on Harry Potter)? I doubt that.

33. No surprise; Annie is a spy. Will she stay loyal to Father Hubbard, if she should have to choose sides? Or will Diana and the de Clermont’s household kind staff win her over?

I would think that Diana and the de Clermont's would win over a waif that has been poorly treated for most of her life. But Diana and Matthew are always being betrayed, so I'm not betting.

34. And, yet again, they can’t start trying to find Ashmole 782 nor about Kit and the silver chess piece! Still, what will be the ramifications to the future because of what Matthew and Diana are doing in the past? Or aren’t they changing much?

I am speculating about what is changing in the future, but I can't figure our how Matthew lived for hundreds of years and no one let slip that he was married and traveled back in time.

35. Why does Annie’s Aunt Suzanna look like Sophie? Is it really just because Sophie’s her descendent? Or is there another reason? If you were Diana, would you want her to help deliver your baby? Will she tell other witches about Diana’s ability?

I just assumed that Suzanna was Sophie's ancestor. It is convenient that she is a witch midwife. I was surprised that she wasn't very helpful.

36. By the way, what do you think the amber and blue lights in the corner of Diana’s eyes are?

I wonder if those lights are from time traveling, maybe strands of time.

37. What did you think about the encounter between cautious Phoebe and rakish Marcus at Sotheby’s?

Poor Phoebe, she is gaining the attention of another intense vampire.

38. Did you trust Goody Alsop when you first heard she’d been called? What did you think about her saying she’d been waiting a long time for Diana? That Diana was a weaver of spells. That certainly goes with Diana ability in calling Ashmole 782. (BOOK QUOTE: “It begins with absence and desire…”) And the reasons the other witches have been so hostile towards her! Whoa. And her parents spellbinding her. Comments.

Diana being a weaver was different, but didn't really explain much to me. Diana's strength is her asking questions? Doesn't sound very controllable. LOVE the chick hatching.

39. What do you think will happen when Diana is called before the elders of the Rede?

Another council of elders?!! Really, the politics is really bogging me down. I was really annoyed that Suzanna challenged Goody and called for a judgement from the Rede. Hopefully this won't bring out more jealous antagonistic witches. I hope Diana can learn from Goody Alsop and become a powerful witch.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 22 – 24

40. Oh, Father Hubbard has reappeared. I worry for both little Jack and Annie, as well as Diana. You?

Yes, Fr Hubbard is a scary and dangerous man. I don't trust him at all and don't know how they will keep him out of their business.

41. What did you think of Mary’s “Diana’s Tree”? The dragon – or rather firedrake? - and what of the bird, that reminded Diana of the illustrations of the wedding of Ashmole 782?

To be honest, I felt like I was missing something significant when all that happened. I liked the firedrake, I hope it is a useful and powerful familiar, because Diana tends to get herself into dangerous situations.

42. Oh, no! Diana lost the babe. What was the meaning of her dream? Do you think someone had a hand in this? Was it Father Hubbard’s appearance? Or was Matthew right and the baby had a genetic anomaly?

So sad that they lost the baby. I felt worse for Matthew than Diana until he started running around with Kit, then I was annoyed with him.

43. Matthew was out with Kit? Why does Matthew tolerate him after what he did? Opiates in the blood! Is Matthew addicted?

I have NO idea what Matthew sees in Kit. I wonder if the 1590 Matthew is more amused by Kit and future Matthew is trying to capture lighter moments. Work hard, play hard? All that intrigue sounds terribly stressful then add Diana and a pregnancy and a miscarriage, he is probably close to the edge of a breakdown.

44. What do you think of the requests for magic left on the stairs? Should Diana assist her neighbors?

I thought the requests were so sweet, but I doubted that Diana's sketchy control would allow her to really help much.

45. A firedrake and a rowan tree? Both unions of opposites? Like Diana and Matthew? And Diana can transfer between worlds? Comments on all the happenings at the Rede gathering and Diana’s forespell? I thought of a lot of things that Diana’s familiar would be, but not a firedrake! You?

The Rede gathering was much cooler than I imagined. And the individual testing of Diana was smart and fascinating, though time consuming.

I hoped Diana would get a cool familiar, but couldn't imagine one that would be threatening/protective and helpful.

46. The Huntress – wants Diana. And she’s wants her to make use of her life. How? What is the significance of whether she has her bow and arrows or not?

I did think the Huntress might have taken the baby when she appeared, but as she said, what use would that be to her. I would think if the Huntress had her bow and arrow, the work and danger would be physical tasks. So she has intellectual or magical things to do?

47. I laughed over that expensive mouse trap, did you?

I did laugh, but I thought they didn't have cheaper versions. What was the point of that?

48. But Gerbert! Eep! Do you think they will go to Prague to investigate Emperor Rudolf’s cabinet of curiosities?

Of course. I hope the book is there. I am getting tired of no progress in finding the book, BUT Diana really needs practice and lessons with the witches.

49. Will this book, “Verum Secretum Secretorum,” be of any use at all?

No idea, I figured that were just going to use it to get Ashmole 782. Again, I felt like I should see more in the symbolism and got nothing.

50. And what of Diana having Mary put her blood in the solution of aqua fortis, silver and mercury? Oh, I knew they were going to need Matthew’s blood, too. Right? So, what now?

I figured this was a sign that Diana and Matthew were really the couple from book and diagram. She is the tree and he makes her bear fruit. Hence she might really be able to bear his children.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 25-27

51. We meet William Cecil and Queen Elizabeth! I think I found this meeting more nerve wracking than the one with Philippe or even Father Hubbard. What did you think?

This was nerve wracking, but Father Hubbard scared me almost as much.

52.Edward Kelly is a daemon working on the Philosopher’s Stone and Matthew has been entrusted with getting him from Prague. Do you think they had any choice but to obey the Queen? How did you feel about Mary Sidney’s intervention to ensure Diana could go with him?

No, I don't think you have a choice when the queen wants you to do something. Mary Sidney came through with Diana's clothing as well as intervening with the queen by redemption of her favor. That was so nice of her to use up her favor for Diana. I would never use my favor because I would always want to save it for some other time.

53. Back into current day and Gallowglass is in Warnambool and now has memories of Elizabethan Diana. it seems Verin deClaremont’s husband Ernst is a warmblood. What do you think are the instructions (warning?) that Philippe gave them?

It sounded like Philippe was ranting about Diana when he was damaged after being tortured and Verin and Gallowglass promised not to speak of those ravings until after Matthew and Diana return from the past.

Everyone else seemed to think Philippe wanted Gallowglass and Verin to go back to Sept Tours and support the family when the time came for confrontations. So I will defer to the majority.

54. I think my favourite part of the start of Part IV in Prague was the scene at night with Jack and Matthew. It seems that Matthew’s character is really developing in this book. Do you agree?

Yes, I think we are learning a great deal about Matthew as a person as well as his past and his family and friends.

55. It seems that the Prague Emperor and his staff may make it quite difficult for Matthew and Diana to see the manuscript or Kelly. What would happen if they are not successful doing this Queen’s errand?!

The queen may forgive Matthew if he makes a serious attempt at returning Kelly, but she doesn't know about or care about the manuscript.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 28-30

56. Rudolf has taken quite a shine to Diana. What did you think of the gifts? Will Diana be able to leave Prague easily?

I have a feeling they are going to rush out of Prague, possibly to get Diana away from Rudolf. I was surprised that Matthew wasn't very jealous about the gifts. This may be the biggest indicator that this was typical court behavior.

57. The meeting with Kelley also introduced us to Rabbi Loew and Abraham who is the weaver that created the golem. There seem to be so many characters introduced in this book! Are you managing to keep track? Do you think Abraham and the Rabbi will play an important role in this book or the next?

Too many characters to keep track of and I'd have loved to seen that chart of who is a true historical character. I think the Rabbi will play a part but maybe not until the last book.

58. The Vampire Herr Fuchs is Benjamin – Matthew’s son. Yet another member of the de Claremont family, although there doesn’t seem to be a good relationship there. ”The most terrifying monsters always look just like ordinary men”. Thoughts?

How sad to have disappointing children or spouses who are immortal. Matthew seems to have a generous share of skeletons in his closet.

59. Diana is told the book will come to her if she asks for it. This aligns with Turtlecollector’s theory that maybe she can only find it if by herself? Will we finally get the manuscript before the end of this book?

Let's hope they finally see the manuscript. I do think they will not find the book without Diana there to call.

60. Leslie posed an interesting question. What will happen to Annie and Jack when Matthew and Diana return to the future?

I've been worrying about Annie and Jack too. I'm sure Diana will have a plan to ensure they are taken care of.

61. Matthew drinks Diana’s blood again, but from a different place as part of a kind of mating ritual. Did you like this scene?

I did like this scene. It finally seemed like they were growing closer. Taking blood seemed a little drastic, but what an easy way to learn someone's secrets.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 31 – 35

62. Is Pistorius going to cause trouble? Or has Gallowglass taken care of him? Or did I miss that?

Like Logan, I am confused about who Pisorius was.

63. **gasp** Diana just came right out and asked to see the book! Brave of her. But, why was the book quiet when Diana touched it in the King Rudolf’s presence? Was that a time-travel thing? Where it recognized her in the future, but not in the past?

I was surprised that Diana just asked for the book and then got it. Diana's encounter with the book was a bit anti-climactic.

64. Eep! Ashmole 782 is made of the skins of many daemons, vampires, and witches. I’m with Gallowglass; the Book of Life stinks of death. And it talks back! Comments.

I was horrified that Ashmole 782's vellum was made of creature skin. Didn't Matthew need old DNA for his genetic experiments?

65. Jack be nimble! The little thief had the ring of keys King Rudolf’s menagerie! Too convenient, or just too funny? What of what Matthew said to him about being bad?

Yeah, Jack's keys were a bit too convenient, but I'm glad his thievery came in handy.

66. They’ve got the book! Alas, it is missing three pages? And they’ll go back to the future to try and find them. Does this make sense to you?

The search for Ashmole 782 was just very frustrating. I'm glad that Diana at least got to glimpse the missing pages, so she'll recognize them if she sees them again.

67. Diana’s pregnant again?! Did you like Matthew’s statement, at the end of chapter 32, about making a difference? Will this pregnancy be viable, especially now that they’ve found the book?

I do think that this pregnancy will come to fruition.

68. Oh, dear! Knox is on the track of one of the missing pages. Any bets as to who will find it first: him or Matthew and Diana? Or possibly Gerbert? A raiding party on the de Clermont stronghold doesn’t sound good. Comments.

I hate Knox! My money is on the vampires fighting to protect their witch kin.

69. Is it wise that Diana lied to the Queen about having the book?

I don't think Elizabeth really cared about the book, so it was a convenient lie.

70. Man-oh-man! How could Diana go off with Kit? **Lisa Kay’s mind boggles** Especially after pushing Kit’s buttons over his poetry?

Diana is just stupid sometimes. Why would she trust Kit? I'm surprised that Kit would think Matthew would forgive them hurting Diana.

71. It is about time Diana’s firedrake made a fortuitous appearance. Of course, now everyone knows of the babe. You thoughts?

I was glad that the firedrake made herself useful. The baby is going to force a confrontation, because the Congregation will not be able to ignore it.

If Matthew denies Diana and the baby, I will be very annoyed.

72. What of the prophecy that Gerbert shared with Ysabeau?

A witch will be the downfall of the de Claremont family.

73. And Louisa? What will happen to her after that crazy stunt? Or do you care?

I hope that Louisa pays for being crazy and drugged and hurting Matthew's mate. I think Philippe will take care of her. I'm glad that she is dead (in the future, or am I misremembering), because I would hate to have her fighting against her own family.

 Marla | 1803 comments Chapters 36 – to end

74. What did you think of Hubbard’s offer of help when Diana decided to go to the asylum? Well, we now know who fills the insane asylums; mostly daemons. Comments.

I thought it was Kit all over again. Why would you go with Father Hubbard?!

75. BOOK QUOTE: “I asked you to stop denying your instincts, Matthew, not become a slave to them.” Were you surprised over Diana’s compassion towards Kit and Louisa, if somewhat conditional?

I think when Matthew is furious, Diana has the luxury of being compassionate, because they will still be punished.

76. Diana’s father! Did you like the scenes between Stephen Proctor and Diana? Corra now has a name; and Diana knows it, thanks mainly to her father. Did you expect more conversation between Matthew and Steven? Did anything else of Steven Bishop’s visit stand out to you?

I LOVED meeting Steven Proctor. I thought it was sad that he knew the future, probably thanks to his wife's second sight. I was sad that he didn't say goodbye.

I liked JoLene's comment about Matthew pointing out how Steven Proctor was an observer whereas Diana was a questioner and these traits helped shape their careers, anthropologist vs. historian.

I'm glad someone finally scolded them about spending all this time in the past. I've been worrying over the changes they are making to the future. But for as long as they've been there, I don't think Diana had much progress with her magic.

77. Ah. Goody Alsop. I’ve really liked her; she and Henry Percy were my favorites (he has a bit of a speech impediment on the audio). I’m glad Jack went with him. Who were your favorite characters in this volume?

Goody Alsop was my favorite character. I liked meeting both fathers, Philippe and Steven Proctor. I did like Henry too and I think Jack will be fine with him. I think Gallowglass & Pierre will check up on Jack too.

78. Whoa. Sorry, I just did NOT understand the whole Father Hubbard thing. Why would Diana give him any of her blood, frozen or not; surely she had other options, like Henry Percy, or Mary Sidney to care for the children. What long-range consequences will his having “tasted” her blood have?

I hated that Father Hubbard now knows all their secrets. Why would that convince him to not out them to the 16th century Matthew? Why is one drop of frozen blood better than fresh warm blood? So much for not having secrets between Matthew and Diana.

79. BOOK QUOTE: “The past has changed us, Matthew. Why should we not change it, too.” What consequences will Thomas Harriot’s telescope have on the modern day world? Conversely, 10 year-old Rebecca White now has Ysabeau’s earring. Isn’t this Diana’s insurance that future will be unchanged? Comments.

I'm glad that Diana helped secure Thomas's invention, but that was blatant tampering with the future. No one could figure out how Ysabeau's earring was in the witch's possession. I think it was serendipitous how Diana met them and spontaneously gave her the earring. A daemon had the chess piece, the witches had the ear ring and a vampire had the other item. Hmmm...

80. Ah! Phoebe and Marcus. Sarah and Em. Baby Margaret. Twins! Happiness and tears. Did you like how the book ended, with Annie and Shakespeare? Too many unanswered questions, or just right?

Too many unanswered questions, since so few answers were gained in this book. Very sad issues left outstanding.

I liked JoLene's comment that all the sections ended with a scene from the future and the last one ended with a scene from the past.

81. What did you rate the book? Did you like it better than the first? Will you continue the trilogy?

I liked the first book better than this one. Yes, I am definitely reading the next book, but I am glad that I listened to this book. And I'm also glad that I waited to continue the series until the last book was out.

I initially rated it 4 stars rounding up my 3.5 stars, but since it was soooo slow and too many characters had me constantly confused. I wish I had the cast of characters list, but alas, I listened to the audiobook. Also there wasn't much of a plot and nothing much was accomplished. Diana really didn't get fully trained. She did find her familiar and learned what her skills were. They barely touched the book and then it was corrupted. All this frustrated me and I rounded my rating down to 3 stars. At least they finally consummated their marriage and I enjoyed meeting Philippe.

Thanks for inviting me to chat with you over this, Marla. I’m hoping to get to book #3 soon and this is a great way to review #2.

#2 – LOL! Yes, I felt the same way about Kit.

#8 – Yes, I wondered if their love would survive Matthew’s past – or be strongly tested.

#10 – All good questions!

#15 – Yes, Matthew is possessive and it is scary!

#16 – Ditto.

#18 – Must have been horrific.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Marla

#20 – About Philippe – really!

#21 – ☺

#23 – Yay! FINIALLY!

#26 – “stunning couple” – Yup, I bet they were.

#30 – Yes – drat them!

#32 – Yes, like an immortality stone.

#33 - **chuckles**

#34 – Yes, what is happening back in the future?

#36 – Could be.

#40 – Very scary man.

#42 – Yes, very annoyed with him. Immature and insensitive, really.

#43 – Yeah, could be.

#45 – Very interesting familiar.

#47 – Excess and extravagance for its own sake? **shrugs**

#50 – I agree.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Marla

#52 – LOL! Really! The queen must be obeyed, certainly back then. What would be the consequences? Eep!

#53 – Yes, all very interesting.

#55 – I agree.

#56 – You may be right.

#58 – Matthew does at that!

#60 – I worried about this… a lot!

#62 – Pistorius is a wizard who was about to become a Catholic priest. Matthew tells Diana, as they are waiting to see the King’s book (Ashmole 782), that he will be back in 10 years to hear Rudolf’s confession. Matthew confirms to Gallowglass, when he asks if Pistorius is being groomed to be a member of the Congregation. I just didn’t know if we have to worry about him in the future

#63 – Yes, a bit. I was anticipating it so much and then –poof – no prob.

#64 – Oh, I think you’re right.

#67 – I hope so.

#68 – Okay. How much money? LOL!

#69 – Could be.

#70 I think maybe Kit is in denial over Matthew’s feelings about Diana.

#71 – Very annoyed!

#73 - She was killed in Barbados, when local plantation owners seized the opportunity of a rebellion to cover up their deed.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Marla

#74 – Beats me!

#75 – Ah. Interesting.

#76 – I loved that meeting, too. Yes, other than Corra, Diana didn’t make much magical progress. Well, not as much as I expected.

#78 – Yes, I totally and completely didn’t understand this. Very frustrated over decision.

#79 – Yes. Hmmm…

#81 – This site might help you with the characters in the next book: All Souls Trilogy Wiki.

Hi LK!
I'm so surprised you haven't read book 3 yet. You must be busy ;)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I'm also shocked you haven't read book #3, Lisa Kay!

I'm listening to it now and its living up to expectations so far.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I know! I know! I'm shocked I haven't read it, either. I have been busy, but I could have squeezed it in. I think it might be because I know how it will consume me - and I'm sure to read it straight through. I'll have the attitude of "No body get in my way." Not a good thing this time of year. LOL!

Lára *Just jumping in*

Nice to have you here, Lisa Kay, you've been missed!

Since you people mentioned book three, I must confess I'm shocked, too, for not having read the Book of Life either. Well, I'm 52% through the book but I've put it on the "on hold" shelf since it's kinda going ... well, ordinary.

Probably going to finish it but not sure when.

Esther (nyctale) I just realized there was a buddy read for this one. I am just done but really want to discuss it. Anyone?

I went into this one fearing the worst. I have a problem with time travel and I am not a big fan of romance. but it was not to much of an annoyance. Although I thing the time travel thing may catch up with me in the 3rd book.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments If you're interested, Esther, Marla and I are planning on going on to Book #3 January 26th or February 2nd. You interested?

message 278: by Esther (new) - rated it 3 stars

Esther (nyctale) I will probably get to it before this as I just got it from the library.

Laura | 5524 comments I finished yesterday morning. I got caught up in the story and forgot to comment as I was reading. But I'll be here to chat as you read.

I think this one might be my favorite of the trilogy. I love seeing their relationship develop, as they really get to know each other and discover the give & take & honesty required in marriage. Matthew might be old, but he doesn't really understand how to share his life with someone else.

Phillipe definitely has long range plans! He has an end game that we don't see fully worked out until the 3rd book, or 4+ centuries later! I guess vampires can afford to be patient. :)

Have you finished the 3rd book then? I'm not surprised Philip's plans are long term. I'm half expecting to get to the end and find the whole thing to end up being his grand plan to ensure the future of Matthew and his family.
