This topic is open for Discussion of Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy #2) by Deborha Harkness. Be prepared for SPOILERS.

What is a buddy read?

Synopsis:

IT BEGAN WITH A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES.

Historian Diana Bishop, descended from a line of powerful witches, and long-lived vampire Matthew Clairmont have broken the laws dividing creatures. When Diana discovered a significant alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, she sparked a struggle in which she became bound to Matthew. Now the fragile coexistence of witches, daemons, vampires and humans is dangerously threatened.

Seeking safety, Diana and Matthew travel back in time to London, 1590. But they soon realise that the past may not provide a haven. Reclaiming his former identity as poet and spy for Queen Elizabeth, the vampire falls back in with a group of radicals known as the School of Night. Many are unruly daemons, the creative minds of the age, including playwright Christopher Marlowe and mathematician Thomas Harriot.

Together Matthew and Diana scour Tudor London for the elusive manuscript Ashmole 782, and search for the witch who will teach Diana how to control her remarkable powers

I just checked the library and there is a waiting list and they don't have it available as kindle book :( If I can't get it from the library I will try to get a used copy some where LOL

Thank you, Karen!! Happy to 'meet' all of you. :)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I can also do DQs, but I don't read so fast so prefer to do the questions during the first couple days

So I had a look at this book in the library (can we all say door-stop) and there are two options for the reading schedule, if anyone has a preference?

#1 - the book can be easily split by 50 pages a day which makes it a slower read over 11 days

#2 - the book can also be split by "parts" as it has 6 parts, but that makes it about 100 pages or so a day. Or we can do a part over 2 days making it a 12 day read (but with less DQs than option 1)

Preferences anyone?

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I'm a slower readers so I will probably be doing the 50 day pace no matter which option the group is doing ;-)

I'm also reading Gone with the Wind and Wolf Hall at the same time!

I think I am keener on that too and between you, LK and I it only makes for a few sets of DQs each really.

I will set up a schedule this weekend

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I'm fine with 50 to 100 p a day. I might zoom ahead, if it is thrilling. We'll see. We might need one break day, if we do the 100 p a day, though. At least for me.

message 25: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
I might do it as 50p per day as the first book was not really fast-paced/action packed so hopefully it won't be too difficult to pause :) I guess we can always make it more pages once we start if it seems to not be working

I just updated message 2...
JoLene - Are you ok for the first 3 days, or I can change it to 2 days if you prefer?
LK - Do these days suit you?

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Yes, I'm good with it......now I just need to decide where/how to get book. I mostly did audio last time.

message 28: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Great :)

And audio is a good idea for this book seeing it is about 10kg...lol

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, they are fine, Karen. Thanks!

I had the audio and the Kindle version, both.

Good stuff LK - won't hurt your arms then ;)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments **chuckles**

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I have had this book checked out since the beginning of July so I won't have to search for it later. Hopefully no one puts it on hold so I can renew it to last through the Buddy Read.

Luckily, if they do, my library has a read for fines program during the summer where each 100 pgs of reading will take $1 off your overdue charges. Reading the book will pay for itself if necessary.

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
lol! What a cool program Tutlecollector!
My library only has the hardcover version and they're not so popular so I'm banking on it being available for the BR! If not, I'll just get it on my kindle

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I've never heard of such a thing, T.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments They started doing it during the Summer Reading Program for kids as an incentive to keep them reading over the summer if they had too many fines on their cards to check out books. Gradually they added one for teens and then for adults. It is only 2.5 months during the summer after school gets out to the end of August. There is a limit of $10, though.

As a community service project, we also have a donation program in November and December called Food for Fines, where if patrons donate food to the Food Bank they can have some overdue fines waived. There is a limit of up to $20 for this. Then on Martin Luther King day in January, we go to the Food Bank and help them sort out all the donations.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Wow. That is a really neat idea, too!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments That is cool !!

Just got my HB copy at the library, but I might also use my audible credit. I find when doing the questions, it's easier if I have a DTB copy.

message 39: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Blogs (brookeblogs) | 9 comments 50 pages a day sounds about my pace...though I'm thinking I may want to check out the audio version as well. :)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments OK, now that I have it from the library ---- I feel like it's calling out: Read me, JoLene, Read me!!!

Just like Seymour from the Little Shop of Horrors

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Well, I went to the brick and mortar bookstore the other day and got seven books. They are all calling me! LOL!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Yeah, my problem is that I'm not loving my F2F bookclub selection :-(

Leslie | 149 comments I have several new books on my kindle that are tempting me.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Drat! That suck, JoLene.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I have a several audiobooks I need to get to. I need to tell myself NOT to use my credits on anymore until I finish those. But, it is just so hard when the books come up at BR or BOMs.

message 48: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
That is tough JoLene. Luckily my 2 F2F bookclubs had good ones this month:
The Humans by Matt Haig
and
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

And keep telling yourself that LK... :)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Well --- no one else really liked the book club book so I know that it's not just me :-D

Since I'm first up with the questions, I wanted to start a bit early......and now I'm already on Part 3 so I'm forcing myself to stop so I can finish with you guys.

Only 3 more days!!! (2 for Karen ;-)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I take it that means it's good! Woo! Can't wait!
