A second born son is sent to a place that trains wizards. They live in a complex underground system and each has a roommate. The boy's room mate smells like fish. They are all given a sort of spell book or something and the boys are required to memorize and recite the passages or I think they were punished.
In order to get food the boys had to focus and somehow imagine the food they wanted to conjure. If they couldn't do that they were left to starve.
There was also a girls story told. She grew up in the country and her mother had died and she lived with her brother/father? She had the ability to hear/sense animals thoughts/feelings. Her father/brother rebuked her when she related this ability so she kept it a secret. One day while she was in town she helped to calm a wild stallion.
Some how she ends up with two guys. One is obsessed with discovering magic, and the other might be his slave but I don't remember him actually coming out and saying it, the girl was speculating or figures it out. The girl starts to fall in love with the slave.
The boy and the girl seem to be from two different time periods and they did not seem to intertwine much in the first book, but throughout the second the stories come closer together.
I believe the books were fairly recently published, I read them only a couple years ago and I was waiting for the third one to come out when I forgot about them. It is driving me crazy because the books were very intriguing and I hate to leave a good story unfinished. If you have any idea or clues to what this series/books are called please let me know!
