Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Rusalk, Amy and myself play World of Warcraft. This thread is a place to chat all things WoW or other games that YLTO members play.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments This is one of my toons, Vare. She's the untitled one. I was playing with a friend and we were so busy chatting that we parked our toons on a park bench in Dalaran so that we could just visit. Hehehe.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments lol Good work Janice!

Playing WoW atm. I have tried RIFT, Warhammer Online and Star Wars MMOs. Diablo 3 as a borderline MMO. And a few others as Portal and original Starcraft as other games. And that's me for now.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Must focus... I need to get some work done! And I'm playing here on YLTO and logging in and out of Wow getting info on my toons.

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments I have never tried WoW but we have been going through Diablo 3. I want to get the expansion pack

message 7: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments I played Diablo 1, maybe even 2. Can't remember. I've switched from WoW to Guild Wars 2.

message 8: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 660 comments I played WoW some time ago, but I stopped my subscription when I had to write my Master thesis... And I have been thinking of starting it again, but I know that if I do, that's all I will be doing.

How do you guys decide if to read or play WoW in your free time?

message 9: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Depends on my mood. If I want mindless things, or if I'm watching a tv show, or if I have a raid planned, I play. I tend to read while waiting for dungeons/raid to pop. And when I want to read, I wander off and read. When I get sick of wow (like the past year with no content update! bah) I read more. I play with Lexx a lot (healer/tank combo) so it's more of a social thing we can do together or with others - got a great guild with some real life friends and my brother in it.

But I must say, when things like the new xpac comes out in November, or even the pre-expansion patch next week, reading will take a back seat for a little while. It would be a good time to come back, beginning of expansions always are.

On the gaming note, we'll be heading to PAX Aus again this year in Melbourne at the end of October. Should be fun! Nothing like a weekend of board games and video games with thousands of other people with the same interests!

I almost wish I hadn't seen this! :) I'm a former WoW player, and I was aware of the expansion pack in November, and toying with getting it, but not until December because I'll be attempting to write 50,000 words of a novel next month and I can't see any way WoW would fit into that plan. Yet I'm intrigued to have my own WoW castle, so it may be hard to wait until December.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments One of the reasons I quit WoW is that I need to watch my expenses. My son started playing Guild Wars 2 which doesn't have a subscription. You pay for the game, but don't have subscriptions. You can buy gems which will get you upgrades and special items. My son bought the game for me for Mother's Day.

My routine for the day is to work till 4:00, listen to audiobook for a couple of hours, supper, Goodreads, and then GW2, bed with a book. But, I haven't played the game for about a week. I think I will get bored of this game faster than WoW.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I'm still grumpy at the sub fees on WoW I must say. I haven't bought the xpac yet because it annoys me I pay $12-20 per month depending on exchange rate and I have to pay another $60 for it. But then I figure it costs me more than that for one taxi ride to the city... But I'm luckily enough to at this point in time not have to budget that much. But I have thought it would have to be one of the first things to go.

Sharon, if you are doing NaMoRiMo (or whatever the acronym actually is), the xpac will still be there and new in Dec if you wish to play. It will eat up your Nov so I say wait.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments If you wait long enough, they usually offer the expansion packs at half price. I recall that I got Pandoria that way.

Melissa | 298 comments Cool to see gamers on here!
I am a Final Fantasy chick, but should say was...haven't gotten back into gaming for at least 3 or 4 yrs...I just play a lame app sometimes....oh but I remember those days where 4 hrs of playing would go by so fast!
I have seen WoW played, but never played it myself. Just afraid that all family members, chores and work would be neglected! Better not start :-)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Yeah, but then I'm behind the curve ball to play with friends which is really why I play.

So, point taken, I should stop whinging :P

My partner and brother love FF Melissa. I can't stand the sound of it. My brother used to play it full ball at our Dad's place as kids. And he would do nothing else besides play it on the playstation all weekend. And the TV was in the lounge room with the other tv. So I couldn't escape the sound of it ever. Lexx knows now it's the perfect way to piss me right off hehe

Sarah | 18549 comments I used to play FF on playstation but I wasn't massively in to it. The only games I played on my PC were things like SimCity, Pharoah, Empire Earth, and Age of Empires. I used to work in a Computer Game shop when I was at Uni which was great fun - I always wanted to try WoW but the subscription (and poor internet back then) put me off. My partner plays ARMA online and he's in a clan so I've thought at various points that maybe I should give something a go too. While my partner didn't know any of the people in the clan when he joined, he knows them very well now and has been to visit them across Europe and we had some come to stay with us too.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments People really make the MMOs I think. Our guild leaders (like a clan) came over to Aus for their honeymoon and we went with them up to the Great Barrier Reef. My Mum thought it was insane, but she didn't really get that we had spent every saturday for the last couple of years ridding Azeroth of enemies together! Not to mention all the other time we had spent together. You get to know people rather well, problem solving together, and learning how to anticipate how others in your group think. Screw team building exercises, thats what people should be doing to learn how to work in a team

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Guild Wars 2 is supposed to be all about guilds. You can join several guilds and all your toons will be members. I'm a member of two guilds, and there has been zero activity. I'm basically playing solo, which sucks because I want to run dungeons. I guess I could pug them, but...

I started out playing a DOS game called Castle. You had to type in words like /up, /down, and to kill a monster you hit x (I think). That was back in the 80's. From there it was Final Fantasy, Zelda, Dungeon & Dragons Forgotten Realms, Diablo, and a host of others I've forgotten. I was always afraid to do the MMRPG's until my son introduced me to WoW. Many days were lost.

My daughter-in-law's brother met a girl from Australia playing WoW. They are now married and living in Adelaide.
